YOU SEE... IN THE OLDEN DAYS...

There used to live a crocodile, up in top lane, named Renekton Renekton He was the GOD of top lane and he destroyed everything that set foot on it's territory. Many junglers gathered to stop his destruction. But Renekton was so strong that he would 1v2 the strongest of junglers and it was not against the odds. Renekton made his enemy hug its tower for 10 minutes and QQ to its junglers. And junglers came with double buffs on hand, to serve him well.

When Renekton was about to claim the throne of top lane, a hero appeared. A dark, evil hero, named Darius Darius. Unlike his weak brother Garen Garen, he was strong. He would battle this fearsome crocodile, head to head. When they used summoner 14 on each other, it was battle time.

On some days he'd lose but on some days he'd win. They battled as if they were battling to claim a chance to fight a bunny named Riven Riven, so that they could rip her head off each time.

When Renekton was not in lane, he would decimate everyone who came up top.

Time passed and Darius grew old. He grew weaker. Though he fought hard, against many monsters and champions, he could not keep up with time. He grew so weak that he would often get kicked out of top lane by these champions Teemo Jayce Quinn Vayne Elise who harassed him to bleed rivers.

To the day he died, he continued to bring glory, justice, and destruction to top lane as long as he could. When it all stopped, he was never seen again.

Despite his end, he reserved his glory as the one champion who did not back down against the crocodile. He was remembered by the glory he brought against the reign of Renekton.

Let us pray.

On a serious note. I miss S3 top lane.

Ah, I remember the good ol' days after 9/11 where it was me as Garen against the world. When Garen could silence for days, had tenacity, and punched minions in the face instead of using his sword because that's what a true man would do in that scenario.

Play Pantheon. Quinn isn't even a problem lol. It's not like she brings ranged harass, huge damage, and amazing team fight like Kennen does.

The tank top meta was awesome. You'd drag Swain top lane and people would have no idea how to counter you :P (I actually got accused of hacking as Swain top once because people on the team had no idea how his ult worked)

swain's ult is bs, heals and does dmg simultaneously, he's in my top 3 bans with voli and velkoz

I honestly do miss those days, even if Vayne top lane was a thing even back then. :'(

Seriously though, good story.

odd how there's no mundo in this pic, tho atm he's a viable pic for top. remember when every1 banned him? ^^

darius was shit in top until I think this season or the last, whenever the rework came

Only Play Darius10 votes

His release was supposedly insane, he had higher damage and there was much less mobility back then

CerealBoxOfDoom2 votes

There was nothing insane about it.

Just a bunch of dumbasses that couldn't handle it.

Some people learn the game and translate it into opposing any given champ and actually read the damn patch notes Others just get their ass kicked enough times and go cry about it until they have a revelation or riot changes something

Back then darius could reset on assist and did more damage and was also getting an % MS buff for each champ that was bleeding

But the bleed did magic damage and I think his pull range was actually slightly shorter than intended because it was set to one standard instead of another.

Yes, ppl swear it was because of the mobility but when I actually went through the champions I found that at least 80% of the champion base had a means of escaping after being grabbed and slowed.

By the way, he spent maybe 2 years without a single victory in any major tournament.. not.. one

Only Play Darius2 votes

Don't get me wrong I love Darius, but his first iteration was problematic. Absolute noob stomper with zero capabilities in organized play, ridiculous early damage at the cost of useless teamfighting made him hated by both teams.

WoonStruck1 votes

It was annoying, not really insane.

People QQ'd too much and got him nerfed

_P.S. I've never played Darius. _

Sona x Rubick4 votes

Darius used to be the syndrom of win lane lose game

the only purpose of Darius was making the enemy top lane useless by killing him a lot of time, in everything else he sucked. His bleed was magic damage for instance, making him useless after 30 min.

WoonStruck1 votes

Or alternatively, you could just afk farm the lane and not let him engage and it was a free win.

I think he's worse now due to his passive. He straight-up stat-checks every other melee in the game, but with massive advantages. If you don't kill him early, you're likely to be unable to fight him later on most champs.

Sona x Rubick1 votes

i'm not saying that darius was broken before, just explaining why he was reworked

Darius is one of my 3 most played champ, and now i consider playing him as an ADC with a teamm8 (except if the new masteries come out) , because like you said he is a stat-checks champ (passive and armor pen) as a bruiser top he doesn't bring any utility nor any engage, he's engage reliant and that's why i would play him rather botlane with attack speed getting that +200 bonus AD quickly, rather than top lane imo.

As much as I hate irelia, and riven. They keep away the scum of top Lane , so the Lane can find equilibrium and be dominated by melees and tanks like it's supposed to. I'll take irelia and riven any day over gnar, kennen, teemo, Quinn , Jayce, and vayne.

Tychusfindlay9192 votes

Reworked darius va renekton is still one of the absolute most exhilarating matchups in top lane, albeit rare...

I would agree that jayce needs to be put back in line. He was balanced around tear start, now that his mana costs are forgiving, we are seeing the idiocy that is ghostblade rush jayce

As for gnar, hes actually not bad after the few nerfs he has gotten. That being said, his design is still total ass to play against. The idea of a ranged bruiser with extreme built in kite is moronic, nevermind the fact that he can turn into a juggernaut with vanguard-level CC and initiation.

MR KIMCHI SENPAI1 votes

Today, I bought Jayce and played top lane against Pantheon. I had to play very safe for 20 minutes until Pantheon scaled off.

It made me recall the olden days of top lane when I had to play so safe against these monsters like Renekton and Darius. And against Pantheon, people had to buy a cloth armor and 5 potions just to survive in lane. But fighting these so called broken champions was the true test of skill.

Oelyk2 votes

Congratulations on buying the best champion in the game. I pity you for the poor match up.

(BTW, people who play teemo, adcs, and elise toplane are not meta, they scale off if you don't let them get free poke. Jayce is a man though, a special kind of awesome)

P.S. F*** Kennen

MR KIMCHI SENPAI1 votes

F* Kennen. I have to look after teammates every game he's in it.

Basically stay in hammer stance until he ults in so that I can E away. Or my whole team dies...

Jayce was much more OP back in the day. Jayce shit on Renekton back then too. Also, Elise ... top? Quinn and Vayne top are rare.

Sona x Rubick2 votes

Elise top was meta until jully 2013 or something, where they nerfed her so hard, But they made her broken in the jungle for the next season.

Time for new heroes. Heroes who can get in there and demolish ranged champs. Heroes who can get on top of a champ running away and stay on them. Heroes who can "Dive" into battle so to speak ;)

Don't forget the old fiora ult Fiora (files nails waiting to get a penta after pressing R)

ShatteredSkys1 votes

Yeah I remember season three, though not particularly fondly as you......

If I remember correctly Renekon got so out of hand that any champion that could not compete with him was unviable. He was played every other game and made nearly every other previously meta; Jayce, Riven, Wukong, etc, top laner irrelevant. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure as Renekton reached his peak Darius started to fade from the meta. I know he was popular around early season three, I was a Riven main and that was a tough matchup I faced often but as Renekton took over I started to see less and less Darius.

MR KIMCHI SENPAI1 votes

I also played Riven back then. I wasn't the best player but I could handle Darius, which was still seen as a tough match up. Despite Riven not having been nerfed back then, Renekton was impossible to lane against. It was considered good to just go even against him.

He did fall hard late game and that's what I liked about the whole meta. Champions had distinct power spikes even in top lane which isn't the case anymore.

Funnily enough, patch after patch there are statistics that validate the notion that Graves falls off late game, yet people still spread this myth that he has a great late game.

Sona x Rubick1 votes

honestly? the best stage of graves is his mid game

but that doesn't mean that he isn't good in late game, his reloading time becomes 0.6 seconds (instead of 1.2 or something) and his AA hurts.

his range sucks but it doesn't matter against melees.

Most melees late game will either be tanky enough to withstand his damage while the carries focus him down, or will be straight up able to fuck his face one on one. The only other scenario where he can really get into melee with an enemy melee champion is if he is peeling, which he is okay at, but in that capacity he's honestly a poor man's Darius.

Graves vs. almost any skirmisher, diver, or juggernaut ends later on ends badly for the Graves. He can team fight, but he's not a true front liner.
