You won't get anywhere with a Defeatist Attitude

A team member calls for a surrender vote at 20 minutes like clockwork.

_Two options are available before you. Depending on your choice, you alone can make or break the game. _ 1. Surrender, lose the game, and stay at whatever rank you are. 2. Keep fighting and climb out of ELO hell.

I'm serious

Throughout my experience with League of Legends, I've seen some pretty perplexing psychological behaviors from the League community.

Why do Vayne/Riven mains rage quit more often then other champion mains? Why do players value kills over objectives despite providing less benefits and a higher risk for failure?

But the most puzzling of them all, is Why do players queue up for a game expecting to lose? Think about it, how often does a team mate types "gg" in all chat at the first announcement of a kill? How can they accept defeat so easily, unless they preemptively assumed that they can't win?

I would love to explain the motives behind these players, but first, I must digress and explain my experience as a League player. Last season, I won 8 of my placement matches and was placed in Silver 1. Since I was still relatively new to League, I was unprepared for the toxic ranked environment. I began losing, hard. My mechanics were often superior or at least sufficient against my lane opponent, but no matter what, I can't win the game. I stopped around Silver 2, but my MMR suffered from my chain of losses.

This season, I was placed in Bronze 1. However, after reflecting on my actions, I realized that the reason I couldn't win was not because I wasn't good enough, it was because I and my teammates didn't believe we could achieve victory. I began queuing up for ranked with a more positive attitude, and I literally climbed a division every week playing only on the weekends. In less than 2 months, I was Silver 1 again, but this time, I can probably climb even higher.

In this thread, I am not going to share gameplay tips. I am just going to teach you how to win.

Many players I have come across in game and on the boards have an "I can't" attitude. They say, "Champion X is OP, that is why I lost my promos!" Or, " I can't win because my team drags me down." In some limited cases, these argument might hold some truth. However, more often than not, the game is as fair to you as it is to your enemy.

For most players, they lost the game before they even got into Champion Select. Rather than complaining about OP champions, learn them yourself. Better yet, learn how to counter them.

I have seen so many threads in which players vehemently denies logical counter arguments and solutions that will fix whatever problem they were experiencing. To raise a personal anecdote, my Achilles Hell is Fizz. I absolutely despises this guy. I used to post lengthy threads about why he is OP detailing all his advantages and get hundreds of upvotes. But these upvotes didn't help me deal with Fizz. Eventually, I realized that I needed to be Pro-active rather than waiting for Riot to nerf him. So I picked up Akali, and beat the crap out of the next Fizz I saw.

Remember, YOU don't have to be the victim. Have the audacity to learn the good champions yourself and play them, or better yet, learn their counter picks, and punish your opponents for picking predictable champions.

Nonetheless, winning lane is only the first part to victory. So, laning phase ends, what do you do now?

League of Legends is a team game no matter the perspective from which you look at it. There is no "I" in team, if you want to win, the next step is to get your team to work together. Believing that your teammates are bad, regardless of whether they actually are, won't get you anywhere.

Your teammates might not be as good as you are. When I was in Bronze, I pretty much cringed everytime at how my teammates played (Please take no offense, Bronze Players XD). But that doesn't matter. Chances are, the enemy team has the same resources and manpower as yours does. **At this stage of the game, whoever can utilize the resource they have the best wins. ** For the love of God don't flame your team mates. The more energy and time they spend jousting each other, the less time and energy your team has to secure a lead or catch up. Instead of typing something you can't take back, encourage or try to offer help to your teammates instead. Operant conditioning has proven that Positive Reinforcement (encouragement) is more efficient than Positive Punishment (insults).

At this point, your team is winning team fights and getting objectives, what's next? Well, it is simple. End the game

Don't loiter around trying to get 5 dragons. The point of League is to win, anything that increases the time to win or threatens the chance of winning is irrational. If you can get their nexus, get the God damned nexus. Baron, dragons, and kills are there to help you do that, they are not the focus of the game. Once you acquire a lead, don't start relaxing, it ain't over 'till the fat lady sings. Pressure the enemy team into making poor decisions, and don't get picked off. Focus on ending the game and only on ending the game. Just like the false pretense of a guaranteed defeat can impact your game play, believing that you will win 100% can make you throw as well.

To sum up, believe that you can win, that you can make a difference. Plant a thought, and reap an action. Because you know you can win, you will improve your chances of victory the best you can by learning good picks and counter picks, be supportive to your team, and not waste any opportunities to win.

Thanks for reading

TL:DR

  1. Learn picks and counter picks - don't to have a favorable match up.
  2. Be co-operative with your team.
  3. Focus on ending the game.
