I agree here. Even if the enemy is grouping your job as an adc is to melt a single target. Even if you do more total damage across targets, killing a single enemy faster is more important as it reduces the skillset available to the enemy and damage output against your team. As an adc you'll also be positioned farther back and may only have access to 1 target so you just want to melt them.

I see shiv as a waveclear tool, only use it when your mid and top don't have waveclear. Otherwise let them do their job and you do yours.

While PD has the stronger theoretical DPS. That's only if you can sit there without having to move. Shiv's proc is better for waveclear/AoE DPS and helps you recover some of the damage you lost by moving.

Shiv if they tend to group - more aoe. PD if they tend to spread out - more single-target DPS.

If you are ahead and can afford to finish (assuming you have a zeal) it then get SS in order to keep your advantage and continue pushing it. If not ahead, but also not behind, then get PD, the extra crit and ASPD gives you higher DPS, and helps you get your passive more. You won't be proccing the Shiv passive more than twice a teamfight, and that magical damage will get over taken by your theoretical damage increase ( theoretical because higher crit chance does not ensure actually critting more often). If behind get Shiv, you need every stat you can get and waiting to be able to afford PD is not good. shiv will also give you waveclear for better anti-sieging.

It depends on what you want. In general Shiv and PD should be chosen for specific reasons. Shiv offers great burst and wave clear, while PD offers better DPS overall. Playing ADC's if you can get away with PD, I like it much better, but usually I need the waveclear so I have to get Shiv instead. Also shiv is a lot cheaper then PD, costing 300g less and building from Avarice Blade(allowing you to get some free extra gold towards building it). The difference is between them stat wise is 10% AS/Crit and 1% MS. If you are playing Cait at an incredibly high level, you should probably get Shiv as the extra MS it offers will allow you to kite a lot easier. Also as its cheaper you can get other items quicker, helping accelerate your late game where she NEEDS to reach before she is strong again.

Usually if I can finish my AS item early-mid game, it's a Shiv. Late game, I'll sell Shiv if I need to and replace it with PD.

Also depends on the team you're fighting against. Imo, if you're having to kite back a lot or if there's enemy champs that can jump on you, I'd rather get PD for the extra speed and crit. If their team is often grouped together or if you're sieging, Shiv is my preferred.

But as I stated first, Shiv is great early-mid game, but PD in the end is better.
