AFKers and Rage quits needs to give Loss Forgiven (updated 4/27/2015)
I am going to be frank and honest about this, mostly because (I'll admit) I'm a little salty coming out of a game with a rage quitter. I would also like to say that since I don't know how to bump threads anymore (or if you even can) this is a repost because my first thread received very little attention on a topic that I feel is being very under-represented.
There is a TL:DR at the bottom, but I will not restate my logic there.
I think it is incredibly unfair to penalize the 4 members of the team that have to lose LP for the actions (outside of the game environment) of one person. It is immensely frustrating and it takes away from the game experience in a completely negative way. The solution I would like to see implemented is that the members of the 4 man team are given loss forgiven while the afker is penalized with, at a minimum, a larger LP loss than normal.
Now I understand that there will be a lot of criticism of this opinion/solution, and I will try address them here.
First, the system would tell that it was a 4v5 (or 3v5....etc) the same way it determines the number of votes needed for a surrender. If you only have 4 people available for a vote (or 3....etc), then you will get loss forgiven for a game. So yes, the people that deliberately troll and stay connected but in base will not result in a loss forgiven. This will also not catch people that disconnect for a portion of the game, but return. We know that this can also contribute to a loss, and I suppose there could be a solution to this case also, but I'll leave that alone for the moment. I would be happy to discuss that in a comment should someone ask. Despite not being able to cover these things, this solution will still save a lot of people from frustration and unfair losses.
Now of course the second thing that would need to be addressed is possible abuse of the system (one person takes the loss so the other 4 get loss forgiven). I think making the penalties of disconnecting from a game more severe would help deter this kind of behavior; in solo queue, losing 80 LP (I'm just making up numbers) to give loss forgiven to 4 other people doesn't seem a course of action anyone would be willing to take. In addition, penalizing people (by banning accounts, low priority queue, etc) more severely (or more frequently) for disconnecting during games could also reduce this kind of behavior. In short, if the penalties are high enough, no one will be encouraged to abuse the system in this way.
I also need to address the people that do legitimately have a reason for a disconnect. Sometimes it happens; internet goes out, mom has to go to the hospital, thunderstorm knocks out power (although you really should take responsibility for this one and not play if there is risk of that....but I digress). My mentality doesn't really change from how things already exist. The general rule would still apply, if your disconnects are infrequent, then there is nothing to worry about. If a pattern develops, or the frequency increases dramatically, then action should be taken. However, and this is where my opinion deviates from the existing measures, even if the reason for the disconnect was out of your control, you still caused a completely unfair loss to 4 members of the community. Your teammates should still be exempt from losing LP, and you should still take a larger penalty because it is impossible to tell the reason for your disconnect.
Lastly, I should address the argument that 4v5 games are winnable and that giving loss forgiven to victims of disconnects encourages laziness and reduces the effort level of the players. Both of these things are certainly true; but the number of games won by 4 man teams is significantly less than the number lost. If you and your team are at the elo (or mmr) that you should be at, then there is no reasonable way you should win a 4v5. Ever. Encouraging people to essentially waste their time just further adds to the frustration of the situation. As for the laziness argument, I believe that leaving a game frustrated and annoyed because of a loss you had no control over is a much worse outcome than having 4 people "give up" when realistically they have no chance of winning. Because of my loss, I'm here typing this and afterwards, probably doing things not related to league. Had I won, I would probably continue to play. More to the point, if I wasn't frustrated in this way, I would also probably play another game. If I did play another game right now, I would probably perform worse than usual and not enjoy my experience as much. This, to me, is a far worse outcome of disconnects than players "giving up" on a losing game.
I would really like to discuss why this wouldn't be a good idea and, if it is a good idea, why it hasn't been implemented yet. I realize that I'm still a little pissed about losing a game like that, but I'd like to think that everything I've stated here is rational. Please, have at it =p
TL:DR If you have a person on your team that disconnects from a game, you should be given loss forgiven for the game and NOT lose LP. The enemy team, of course, would be unaffected.
