Assassins are there to kill the ADC or any other squishy targets before getting killed. Its a suicide mission but if you take out one or 2 carries in the opponent team, they are left with 3 members, and is hard for them to 3 v 4. They can then push a turret or kill a tank or something and/or push for the objective.
"Mages just do everything better"
yes i somewhat agree that, but at times mages dont usually have the mobility needed for early ganks and/or to dodge the skill shots.
Yes i am sure you will say
is a mobile champ, but he cant bring the damage needed in early game unless you get hit by that stun, which is somewhat easy to dodge while laning. With champions like
and
it's fairly easy to gank early.
Champions like
and
can poke you out with energy, where as mages need mana to do anything. They can stay in the fights longer. When mages need to recall for mana or items, assassins can move bot or top to gank or counter jg/and possibly kill the jg who is at low health/mana, recall and then get back to the lane 5-8 second after the mage returns to laning.
Against a
? His wave clear potential is HUGE, but it's somewhat easy to lane freeze, and he wont be able to do much at close range especially when he is ganked. (i am talking about timed ganks when 2 of his abilities are on cooldown not mindless "GO HAM" ganks. That's pure stupidity). Mages like
are deadmeat once their stuns are down.
To simplify, what i personally feel is that, assassins are there for early level snowballs, mages are there for late game team fights.
