Zed is healthy for the meta

Regardless of your thoughts on Zed's current balance, it is clearly the case that a Zed meta is a healthy meta.

  1. Assassin vs Assassin promotes more skill and interaction in the mid lane match ups than a mage meta. Consider the absolute complexity, calculation, and outplay potential of a Zed vs Kat or Zed vs Fizz meta mid lane match (as compared to a farm fest like Xerath vs Azir/Ahri vs Ziggs). This is more exciting and interesting from both a Solo Q ranked as well as an LCS watching experience. When 1 or both of the mid laners CS at close range and there is greater snowball at close quarters with inherent outplay built in, it raises the stakes that much higher.

  2. There is more counterplay to Assassins like Zed than meta mages. Many mages at 3+ items can 100-0 targets from hundreds of meters away. They lob tons of AOE and CC at the enemy team. In even the worst case, they stand back and act as long range artillery with very little counter play. Assassins must get in close range to actually kill anyone. Meanwhile, Assassins can always be shut down with teamwork, strong support/peel and strong frontline no matter how fed. They also inherently fall off at a later stage in the game, making the stakes much higher. If both sides run an assassin, there is inherently a late game possibility that superior teamwork or a high risk misplay will lead to a reversal.

  3. Zed is a model assassin. He is a cornerstone of good assassin balance. There is clear telegraphed counterplay (attack him when his 20+ second W is down, abuse melee, outplay his Death Mark combos). Unless overwhelmingly fed through outplaying (in which case there is still counterplay but he is fairly and sufficiently rewarded for his earned lead), there is plenty of counterplay in the sense that his damage is telegraphed (Qs can be dodged and Ult is telegraphed). At the same time, he's a high skill champ that promotes dedication to the game and has sky high ceilings of rewards for those who will practice the combos. To many extents, Zed is the Ezreal of mid lane, there is a very proportional translation of player skill into champion effectiveness while at the same time giving a fair chance for counterplay and promoting high risk plays/outplays.

Zed is not correctly balanced. They keep buffing his early game even though he's already so strong early and so irrelevant late. It just makes him more frustrating in solo queue but doesn't make him any more relevant in organized play.

When I play him, he's VERY relevant late. You just have to know what you're doing with him. His late is actually a lot better now since the Death Mark cool down buff. You can split, Ult someone to death... and repeat very shortly after.

Why should he balanced for late when he's an early-mid game champ? His late is also fine if you know how to time your manoeuvers and have sufficient combo reliability.

In solo queue he can remain relevant late game but honestly any champion can. If you look at pro play and organized play in general he's not good, and it's because his late game falls off so hard and he depends on snowballing too.

He never needed buffs for early game. It was just pointless. Yes it matches his identity but it did not solve any problems. It just made it more frustrating to play against him.

It's the same idea as buffing Tryndamere's late game. What problem is that supposed to solve?

its not a buff, its rightful compensation for the Duskblade nerf

if he received absolutely nothing then he would just get gutted for no reason

plus the buff is gated behind skill (you need to land multiple Qs)

Buffing his laning phase isn't compensation for his midgame power spike item being nerfed.

Well you can't add another item or modify an existing item (too many balance ramifications for many champs to control).

If you dramatically ramp up Q/E/R numbers for the mid game (to the point where it matches the levels where a normal Zed usually gets Dusk) then the numbers have to (logically) be even higher in the late game which would lead to a massive buff to his late. It would also be a CLEAR buff to Zed in mid (as opposed to compensation) since even a Zed who is behind in gold but even in EXP would get that massive reliable damage spike (whereas before it was gated behind conditional gold from the Dusk buy).

So they decided to ramp up a historical trend instead. Make Zed more high risk high reward (land multiple Qs = massive damage... fail to do so, fall behind). Its a good design choice and there is inherent counter play and skill contest.

1/2: "Fun Gameplay" and "Counterplay" is one of the reasons why this game no longer feels like it once has. League has turned from a strategic game with different roles to an action oriented deal-dmg-and you're helping game. In their role, doing their jobs most champions lacked counterplay but they were quite garbage in other areas. AND IT WAS FINE. League might be more fun to watch these days but it tends to become quite dull playing...

  1. Lol... not even close... Zed's hardly an Assassin in the first place... His laning and Kit is basicly that of a Mage! The only thing that makes him an Assassin is the ult. Which in combination results in of the most frustrating laning phases in the game.

One last thing... League is not a hard game. Never been, never will be. (That's why all those attemps to make the game more action/skill heavy will and do fail) You have 4 Buttons to press. +minor extras

It really takes not that much time to 'master' what ever champion in the game. Muscle memory is a thing.

The only part were League has it's challening parts is game-knowledge when can I fight champion X at time Y with Item Z and when should I run. And that is required on every Champion you main from Garen to Azir.

Couldn't agree more, with how OP ADCs are right now we could do with Zed coming back into the meta

Explain that logic, please. Both teams have an ADC. One team gets the Zed or loses a ban to maintain parity.
