My Problem with Shyvana

Volibear I played a Voli jungle game yesterday in which I went 6/0/0 in the early game, ganking every lane and snowballing the fuck out of them. Shyvana barely appeared out of her jungle, but despite my efforts my lanes were still not doing too well. I thought, whatevs we can still win, I'm fed.

But once she did appear from the jungle she was so fucking strong. The amount of tankiness and damage she has in the early game with just challenging smite and devourer is ridiculous. All she did was farm, and she kept up with me in experience with 6/0 Volibear. I thought the downsides of buying devourer was to sacrifice early game for late game scaling. At least with Yi, Xin, and Jax, I can just flip them into my team and bite them dead.

That game I went chilling smite cinderhulk and did what tank junglers are supposed to do. Snowball lanes and dominate the early game as intended before they fall off late game. But even then, Shyvana was always tankier by just buying bruiser items. I don't know what the issue is here. Maybe its her innate armor/health scaling or something but eventually we lost cause my adc decided to back in a bush mere feet away from the enemy team (and their superior team comp).

If you guys have any tips against Shyvana as Voli jungler, please feel free to chip in. My ideas were maybe to just go devourer myself and dominate with Guinsoos (like Trick), or to go tracker's knife and counter jungle more.

This is the entire cause of your problems. Shyvana's Weakness(or that of any devourer jungler) is that she has little impact on lanes early on and even if she her self gets an really powerfull midgame, it often is of no use to her since the rest of her team is behind. If your laners are still loosing despite haveing alot gank pressure from you and nearly non from the opposing shyvana, when it's a deserved loose for your team. If 1 guy does well(in this case you) and the rest does horrible, how would it be fair to win that game? If 4/5 match ups are won by the opposing team, they damn well desrve the win, even if it's shitty for you as you did the best you can. But thats what a team game is, it isn't about individuall performance, but about how the **team **performs.

Shyvanas whole point is powerfarming for alot gold and XP, reaching a very powerfull midgame that way. Therefor she risks her lanes falling behind to ganks early on as well as getting outscaled later on, as nearly every other champion is scarier with 6 items than shy, she just reaches the 6 items faster because of the absurd clearspeed. Also, one of shyvanas strengths is dueling other tanks, so it isn't exactly suprising that she can keep up 1v1 after reaching her item powerspike, especially vs maxhealth stacking..

It's sated devourer in general. The item allows double on hit effects, Shyvanna has two on hit effects build into her kit already, as well as a way to double on hit effects yet again.

So basically in an isolated duel, Shyvanna can hit you with a basic attack, then twin fangs, then auto, dealing that basic attack damage, then with her E effect on you will deal an additional 10% of your maximum hp in on hit damage if my math is correct, I think it might be higher. I'm not positive if that's 5 procs of the on hit or 4. Probably 5 with sated devourer.

Add to that the on hit damage from burnout, plus the aoe from burnout. It's an immense amount of damage if you stand and duel her. In fact she's one of the top tier duelists in the game along side Xin Zhao, Jax, and a couple champions who I'm forgetting.

Dodge her E if you don't want to melt from her AA's

I'm a Shyvana main and I've also played quite a bit of Voli so here's my input.

The strength that Voli has over Shyvana is CC. To make up for that, Shyvana is one of the best duelists in the game. Volibear can't 1v1 a Shyvana that's even with him and even a Shyvana that's a little bit behind him, but he is substantially better at killing the enemy carries in teamfights. Also your E is the bane of Shyvana. A lot of Volis don't realize that your E almost completely makes her useless, because if she is not within auto attack range she literally cannot do any damage at all. It makes her W useless and makes her useless until her W is back up unless your team is stupid and doesn't kite her. Every time I'm against a good Voli as Shyvana, I dread the moment he decides to use E on me because it really is a counter to Shyvana.

What you need to do is E Shyvana and then completely ignore her and go for the enemy carries. During the early game, all you have to do is predict where she is going to gank. Like I said, his E makes her useless. If you are there when she ganks, you are completely disabling her from doing anything. She won't be able to get ANY damage off at all. Voli is one of the best champions in the game for counter ganking Shyvana.

Hope this helps.

Holy shit I never knew Voli's E was that good against her in that respect. Thanks for the tips. Although, if she never ganks, should I try and counter jungle? Or maybe just get Trackers knife to help get vision for counterganks?

Unfortunately for me in this specific game, their team comp consisted of Jinx, Annie, and Wukong. Basically a war on two fronts. I couldn't both peel and engage Jinx successfully and my team just sucked compared to them. I guess from reading the other comments, the game was an inevitable loss.

There's really no point in counter jungling. I average getting my devourer item between 7 and 9 minutes and have it fully stacked by 14 to 16 minutes. She clears too fast for Voli but Voli is a super early game jungler and early game junglers counter Shyvana (Nidalee is the hardest counter, but a good Lee Sin, Evelynn, Elise are extremely good against her). If your score is 2/0/4 at 6 minutes, she's in trouble, because there's really nothing she can do to stop you at that point and the game is getting out of control for her before she's even had a say in it and that's exactly what she doesn't want. Whenever I play Shyvana i always have to gamble that the enemy jungler just simply won't do well when he ganks because there's really nothing I can do to stop him until I hit level 6 and even then I'm just going to be farming a lot.

If you're playing against a decent Shyvana she'll always do the Valkrin super clear, meaning she'll take krugs, raptors, wolves, gromp, back, and then do a full clear.

A cheesy way to get a kill early is to go to her gromp at around 2:30. I always time what time I kill gromp (or krugs depending on the side) before my first back and it's usually 2:50 to 2:58 and then I instantly back, however I'm always REALLY low. If you wait in the blue buff bush at 2:30, wait for me to get low with gromp and rolling thunder and some auto attacks, possibly a flash would kill me instantly for a cheesy first blood. It's never happened to me, but anyone could easily do it and a good shyvana will run exhaust instead of flash so you have to keep that in mind because you are guaranteed to burn her flash or exhaust this way. I really hope that people don't start figuring this out and doing this to me though, probably shouldn't even post this tbh

Another thing is that once Shyvana finishes her 2nd clear she will almost always try to gank top, because she'll be about 3/4s of the exp needed to reach level 6 and she's hoping she can get a quick first blood for level 6. If your top lane is pushed in and she can't gank she'll most likely go for scuttle or try to counter jungle your top side or gank mid. You are very unlikely to see her bot so you can expect her to gank top or mid at around that time. I think it's somewhere around the 5 minute mark.

Don't get tracker's knife. Just buy vision wards, it might be a good idea to hold off on the oracle alteration as well. The most important thing is to hold your E because if you don't hit her with it she'll most likely kill you or your laner. Also never use rolling thunder on Shyvana, it's a waste.

Also if she never ganks, then just gank more. She's gonna want you to try and counter jungle her because you're ultimately wasting your time and not ganking, giving her more breathing room to farm and not worry about you. You'll ultimately lose exp walking to her jungle and back if you just somehow happen to catch her jungle camps uncleared, but most of the time she'll have cleared it long before you get there. To keep it simple, play for the early game as hard as you can because she can't do anything about it. That'll win you the game, unless your ganks aren't successful. I should also point out that you're better off giving your laners the kill especially against Shyvana because she will beat you no matter how fed you are because you're not a damage dealer. If your team gets to the point where they can kill Shyvana in 5 seconds, you won. That's what you want to have happen as Volibear.

Best thing you can do against shyv is counter-jg the crap out of her. Much like udyr/sej, she's very reliant on farm to be relevant at all mid/late game. Get rid of the roots, and the flower shall not flourish. Jhin
