Rating someone based off of their Rank . . .

Personally this is my biggest pet peeve about this community. Basing my skill level on my rank, Which in all honestly i couldn't give two horses and a penny about. In my last game, This annie (Which honestly is a powerful, but good champion) Decides since she was 10/3 she would start insulting me, (A first time aatrox in normals who was still trying to grasp the ins and outs of aatrox) I got 7/6 by the end of the game, but she based her judgement off of me by my rank (Bronze 4, Which I'm not sure I actually belong there because i won the last 5 of my provisional in a row so -shrugs-)

Basing how skilled you are should be based off the actual game play, now how well your team did overall. And ranked is more along the lines of "How well did your team do" Vs "How well you Did." If the system actually calculated how well you were doing as a player the ranks would probably be different. Overall I'd just like to see how others feel about being judged based on their rank. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best player in the game, but I knew not only how to counter annie (Seriously just get some MR and a Banshies) and you'll do just fine against her.

Do you think rank is an actual skill judgement.

This is a very poor question.

Does ranking provide a real, valuable assessment of a player's skills? Limited, but yes.

Does ranking tell you everything valuable about the player? No, and it never can.

The ranking system provides you with a lot of information that is more useful to a computer than to a human being i.e. ability to CS, KDA, relative skill compared to other players.

Additionally, the current ranking system for League is actually a piss poor metric because it doesn't measure enough. Just because someone is Diamond, doesn't mean they have Diamond level decision-making, mechanics, teamwork. It doesn't guarantee they are even good at theory-crafting, adapting to unorthodox picks/situations, performing under pressure. It doesn't guarantee them have the right attitude or know the proper gameplay patterns for all roles.

So what does it guarantee?

  • Their general understanding of the game is at above-average for certain roles
  • Their general decision-making and reflexes are above-average for certain roles
  • They consistently perform better than a subset of other players in certain roles
  • They are above average at recognizing and abusing the mistakes of other players
  • They are above average at recognizing and abusing certain game mechanics

It tells you nothing about their teamwork, adaptability or mental fortitude.

You have to realize that everybody is different.

Some people would rather lose than get carried. Some people will blame to no end instead of self-reflect. Some people will find the worst, most worthless of reasons to cause problems.

There are people stuck in Bronze because of their mentality, not their skill. There are people who can't get promoted because they psych themselves out during promos or just plain suck while under pressure.

The Annie you encountered is the perfect example of a vocal minority we are unable to effectively punish.

Why did I say effectively? Because in-game, there is no way to effectively punish people like this without punishing your other teammates. If you fight back, you make a shit situation shittier. If you defend yourself calmly, you are still at their mercy because they need to accept your defense. If you do nothing, they have free reign. If someone else steps in on your behalf, now they're a target too.

One of the problems is, people can't see when you mute/ignore them or get punished for repeatedly getting muted/ignored by members of the community.

Imagine a rager seeing a notification, "A player on your team has muted you". No big deal right? They've won, so they think their behaviour is justified and continue. Suddenly they see, "2 players on your team have muted you" then "3.." and before long "The team has muted by you; chat and pings are now disabled". All of a sudden it's not so funny.

Can you imagine how great it would be for that same person to get chat, ranked, etc, restricted because the game detects that a whole bunch of players just can't stand their attitude? Then even better, the people who played a part in their punishment get a little notification "A player that has recently negatively affected your League of Legends experience has been punished".

Sadly, none of this exists.

Just try your best and remember to actually have fun playing the game. That's what games are for.

If somebody is being an asshat, save yourself the trouble and don't bother humouring them. If they are really bad, send a report then forget about them.

Times are hard, prices are going up and some people just aren't worth the spit you'll have to use to argue.

Bro, LOLKing doesn't give me your MMR, so your performance in a game and your rank is all I have to go on. If I think you performance is crap (perhaps because it's crap) and I look up your rank while I'm dead, I'm going to see a rank that confirms my assumption that you're crap, and there we go: all the information I have indicates that you're crap. What should I be using to judge you? How many hours you've spent on community service in the past year? Get real.

Frost the Reaper1 votes

Now yes, I can see what you mean. However the Annie was G3, the rest of my team was B4 or under. Its obvious our MMR had to at least match up to be fighting her, do you not agree?

McAllister1 votes

Personally, I don't rage at my teammates, so it's kinda hard to put myself in the shoes of someone who does. That said, if I'm toxic, I'm mad and I want to be an asshole, there are two possibilities: I got matched with this fking noob because Riot's matchmaking is crap, or I got matched with this person who's MMR is fairly close to mine, and they're just having a bad game. Which one am I going to assume?

Don't get me wrong, people who rage at their teammates are lacking in many important human qualities including intelligence, but if you pretend you're only functioning with half your brain cells, the logic starts to make sense.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about people trashtalking, especially in a normal and their argument is "I'm a Gold player having a really good game and you're Bronze!!"

Disabling All Chat does wonders. Muting rude teammates also helps if it prevents you from tilting.

I personally look at the person's rank, number of games played, death average and cs/min.

Therefore by my metrics:

  • If you're stuck in Bronze with over 200 games played, you probably belong there.
  • If you average more than 5 deaths on your main and a global 7+ average, you have awareness/decision making issues.
  • If you can't maintain over 5 cs/min (as a laner), you probably need to work on your last hitting and lane basics.

Do you account for CS if that player was obviously playing support plus the Kills to Death average switched to Assists per Death Average? (We all know supports don't get Kills, or CS)

Sailor Mint1 votes

As a support main (in denial), I rate supports using a different set of equally harsh metrics that is mostly based on the death and assists columns. And kill participation (a.k.a. the "what are you doing" stat).

Still, relatively hard to judge how good someone is at supporting when looking at raw stats (you can have a god score playing passive, borderline useless). It's much easier when they are blatantly bad at it.

Frost the Reaper1 votes

Okay, Thank you. See some people I've come across don't judge based off the Assist to Death (Especially while in the game: and Quote "Lmfao Janna your 0/2" Me: "Yeah but you forget i hae 20 assists"

lol people coming in this thread, bm'ing there ass off, fuck people

Frost the Reaper1 votes

I don't think I BM'd anyone, and Personally McAllister and Devi both only stated opinions based off of what they feel. Who's BM'ing?

Honestly ranked is more about playing the champions that are powerful in the meta rather than actual skill. Only people who are ignorant dicks would ever insult someone on their rank.

Rank does show an approximation of your skill. Unfortunately, it's pretty badly not exact. Most people are at least within about 3 tiers of where they should be though. So if you're bronze 4, then you should be somewhere from bronze 5 to bronze 1, and you can't really tell exactly which one.

After doing all the Math I have 4.7 CS per minute (So slightly under 5 however on my main (Jinx) i tend to roam after about 12 minutes or if we get the tower and I try to snowball another Lane) with an average of 10.8 kills per game and 7.5 Deaths per game. So overall, Yeah I need to learn more about some things. However I've won 4/6 matches with jinx so far so I've gotta say I'm not doing to horrible, Right?

It isn't like rank isnt an indicator of skill at all. A typical Diamond/Plat player will be far better than the typical silver/bronze player. And TBH that is what rank is for to determine the skill levels of fellow players. Of course there are always exceptions and it is not 100% accurate but to say that Rank does not represent skill level at all is false.

Be thankful you are not in Plat V with about 85-90% of its population not belonging there.
