Everything becoming a skillshot is a problem.

Seriously, this is probably the single biggest cause of power creep in League.

You guys dislike mobility creep?

Well, lets look at one of the most flagrant examples of this. When Fiora was reworked, they changed her Q from a targeted dash to a skillshot dash. This was a massive buff.

When Q was targeted...

  • She lacked terrain scaling in most scenarios.
  • She couldn't Q people who were invisible or in bushes.
  • She couldn't use it to pursue somebody out of range if there were no targets.
  • She couldn't use it as an escape.

Now that it's a skillshot...

  • She can dash over walls.
  • She can hit invisible units.
  • She can spam it on CD to gain ground in chase.
  • She's now extremely slippery.

Now, you think this is a one-off thing? NOPE

  • They did the same thing with Akali's ult.
  • They did the same thing with Warwick's ult.
  • They did the same thing with Talon's E.

You guys hate damage creep?

Well, guess what Riot has to do when they make a Skillshot versus when they make a Targeted spell?

They have to amp it up a bit

OG Ryze Q, at max rank, did 135 (+40% AP) (+6.5% Mana) as a targeted spell. Along with one passive proc, that's all it did.

The current Ryze Q, a skillshot, does 180 (+45% AP) (3% bonus Mana)... and it can give you a 40% haste for 2 seconds... and it can actually do double that damage... and if it does it will also hit anybody standing next to the target. Oh wel at least it has a 6 second CD, which is 2 seconds more than OG Ryze... but oh wait it fully resets every time you cast a spell, and current Ryze has another spell on a 2.25 second CD.

Other examples of this include Zilean Q (became a skillshot, gained an AOE stun), Veigar Q (became a skillshot, became able to stack two minions at once), and Pantheon Q (became a skillshot, gained a shitton of range and became a waveclear spell).

You get what I'm saying here?

If Riot has to make a targeted spell, they will tone it down to a reasonable level.

If Riot has to make a skillshot, they'll say "Oh it has counterplay you can just dodge it" and go all out.

This just leads to the game going from "You got hit by Dazzle? Oh you're in danger" to "Oh you got clipped by a Zilean stun on minions? You're fucking dead, kid".

If you still don't believe me, imagine if these changes went through.

Zoe

  • Paddle Star is now a targeted nuke that can be intercepted (800 range)
  • Paddle Star damage changed from (at max level) 220 (+0.6 AP)-550(+1.25 AP) to 200(+.5 AP)-250(+.625)
  • Sleepy Trouble Bubble is now a targeted spell that can be intercepted (800 range)
  • Sleepy Trouble Bubble no longer gains range over walls.
  • Sleepy Trouble Bubble no longer doubles the damage of the attack that wakes up the target.
  • Waking up a sleeping champion now triggers Spell Thief.

She goes from being the most hated mage, somebody who just spams potshots until she just happens upon a kill, into a sustained damage threat who is always looking for angles to pull off R-E's on unsuspecting targets.

Pyke

  • Phantom Undertow is now a target spell that takes Pyke a set 550 units in his target's direction (550 range).

With just this one change, Pyke loses a lot of the versatility that makes him so strong right now. He can't use E to escape unless there's an enemy behind him, he can't E into position to land Q,

Taking game health aside, there are some champions that just feel better with targeted spells.

The biggest example I can think of would be...

Taric

  • Dazzle has been reverted to its pre-rework cast paradigm (single target, targeted spell)
  • Dazzle's damage has been changed from 250 (+.5 AP) (+.5 bonus Armor) to 160 (+.2 AP) (+.25 bonus Armor) at max range and 300 (+.4 AP) (+.4 bonus armor) at point blank.
  • Dazzle can now target units in range of Taric's Bastion Buddy.

Not only would this feel better to play as IMO (it's easier to communicate "get near this person" to your buddy than "STAND DIRECTLY SOUTHEAST OF VAYNE OR I CASTRATE YOU") but he loses the potential for an AOE stun, he loses waveclear, he loses a little bit of tower pushing ability, and he loses some damage at the start of the fight.

There's a lot of things about Taric that I'd like to see reverted, but for this topic I'll settle for just his stun... at least in this post.

so you made Zoe and Taric extremely boring, and made Zoe also terrible.

I made Zoe not cancer and I made Taric feel good to play.

Zoe loses her entire niche as a flank shot mage with these changes.

You're right that skillshot obsession is a plague but Zoe is a relatively balanced exception who's only real issue is how stupid her W is.

Yup.

That's a terrible Niche that shouldn't exist, and you'd think we would have learned that with Nidalee, but here we are.

Balance her as a sustained damage champion who kites people out and occasionally picks people off with her team's help with an R-E from Fog of War.
