Rune Pages cost you your soul plus rent

I'm getting sick of how ridiculously expensive it is to get a rune page. 6300 IP for the pages plus a minimal of 410 IP per a rune, around 1000 per a quin Assuming you've only bought the cheapest for a complete page your looking at (410x27 + ~1000*3) = 14070. You get about 40-70 IP per a game meaning you'd need to play 201-352 games to get just one rune page. Now it's pretty much no question that your gonna need a rune page in order to play ranked however just to have a rune page for every role you need to play (201 x 5) = 1005 or (352 x 5) = 1760 game. This is complete bullshit. Riot totally gives new players the shaft at and you really need those rune pages in a game where laning phases is a huge factor on the outcome of the game. Point being Runes cost way to much, and it makes i difficult to make rune pages for every situation/role. It's basically punishing new players making it harder for player to come to ranked or just to enjoy the game.

I'd also be nice if they fix the renaming rune page bug and add a way to organize your runes/masteries.

Update: I'd be really nice if they at least decreased the amount to buy champions. At least that why you'd be able to save up for runes. No really lost, no reason no to.

They're looking to rework the entire rune system so don't expect simple changes like price reduction. Expect radical changes like free runes for everyone or select any runes during champ select

SanKakU1 votes

I thought they are just making it look like how the shop looks now.

Oy Vey1 votes

Free runes? Then what about all the people that bought runepages with RP? Are they going to refund them? If they make runepages editable like masteries during champ select, doesn't that make having more than one rune page obsolete? There's a great deal of problems with the current rune system, and potentially even more problems depending on how and when they rework it.

SanKakU1 votes

Looks like you replied to the guy that objected to the free runes comment with your own objection instead of to the guy that made the free runes comment.

Such is life when you read board posts in chronological view. Feelsbadman

As i know only rune pages can be bought and they wouldn't refund them. The new Hextech Crafting system make Skins free, but the aren't refunding them.

Angry Monster2 votes

yeah not sure where you are making this up from, but you might want to stop before your dreams get hurt.

Riot has never said that they were going to make rune pages changeable in champ select. It makes have PAGES meaningless.

Next riot has never said that they were going to make runes free. They might make them cheaper (like the price of standard t3) but to assume they are going for free is a bit much.

Dreams and wishes do not equal reality

WRONG. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/ydAqrpb4-ghostcrawler-and-his-failures?comment=0014

They've also sent surveys asking about the rune system, if runes should be free, if they should offer IP refunds for all runes and rune pages , and if all runes should be free and available to all. Dont make up stuff man, you might confuse people [slayer-jinx-catface]

learn to read, not take away from what you wish for.

Runes in champ select would be cool, but the system would have to change more for that to be feasible. I predict it will happen at some point, but perhaps not soon.

Just cause he says that it would be kool does not mean it will happen. At no point does he say he say it is a work in progress.

you are taking away what you want. (sorta like the solo q people) you are going to be disappointed next season.

Must I wait till next season to be disappointed? :p

Free might be overdoing it, but I cannot say I don't like the idea. I don't really have a grasp on Rune economics.

This is harsh truth that will get downvoted so much but i have to say it: Average veteran player:I WORKED HARD AND GAVE MY LIFE FOR IT AND I VE GOT EVERY SINGLE RUNE IN GAME "Rito dont give those new players all my hard work pls!!" Edit:i am still sorry for saying this :/ but it is truth....

Unless you're playing with autofill, you don't need to have a rune page for every role. Set up the two you get for free for the two roles you're going to queue to play.

notice me Sin pi1 votes

u definitely need more than just 1 rune page per role tho e.g. mid: Lux (AP) / Talon (AD) supp: Leona (tank) / Soraka (AP)

Hrkk Ptoo1 votes

Pick one Type of champion for the given role???

notice me Sin pi1 votes

it's viable, but personally i find it frustrating to be restricted in counter-picking during draft

adjoth1 votes

Not entirely true, some variation in your pages are helpful. Pick any lane, now what type of enemy's are you likely to deal with AD and AP scaling maybe both? So at bare minimal you should have a page to fight AD or AP scaling enemies (MR/Armor/Health). And then there is your own selection of champion, most if not all role have have AD or AP options, so you have at least 4 pages for a single role (more if you consider a champion in a more detailed light). That's at least 8 pages for just two roles and the runes to fill them out. Lucky there is some overlap with the runes but you have a trade off then, this is mostly for newer players but you'd have to pick between runes/pages to champions which just limits you. Not to mention if you ever want to learn a new role or even just a champion type (mage, fighter, tank, etc) your likely going to need another page/runes.

Well as a player of 5 years I'm in a rare spot where I want more than 20. Even though it should practically take me at least 20 games to use each one and even that is a good bit of gaming. However realistically I use some much more than others; it's just I like being fully optimized even for some rare situations or picks for me...

What I propose is a tweak to the way rune pages work.

We have some stats or slots that are usually used to boost your champion's output (their offensive stats usually; reds/Quints; sometimes it's extra extra tankiness or utility tho, but still that is because you're a full tank or support). These define YOUR champion. Then we have these other slots for health, armor, and magic resist that is usually just taken as a reactive response to the enemy team composition. Yeah sometimes you can fit in mana stats or cooldown stats there; but only usually as a response to an enemies lack of magic damage. These are dictated by your enemies team composition (or your boldness)

If those two groups of runes were split (red/Quints vs. yellow/blues) I wouldn't have to make at least 3 duplicates of rune pages for every champion type for vs. ad, vs. ap, or CDR. In theory this could cut down on the number of rune pages needed for everyone as well while expanding on the possibilities for those with a lot of rune pages.

If the rune system ever gets redesigned it should try to keep OUTPUT and reactive defensive "runes" seperate (I think some kind of extra tankiness only tanks would want would be fine in the OUTPUT area tho). Another solution would be to remove resist "runes" and rebalance early dmg however that would cut down on a lot of depth.

So, yeah...although I have only 7 rune pages, I do want more than that and I have 20 mastery pages and I want more than that. Not fully sure how useful having more than 20 mastery pages would be, but yeah.

Now what would be interesting is if they would give out another 5 or 10 free rune pages and open up the maximum number of rune pages to 50. I'm sure most people wouldn't bother having that many, seems like 25-30 would be fine for many hardcore players I don't know, but I suppose there would be some players that would use that many. Seems like you can come up with combinations for that many of the rune pages. There are a lot of runes available after all.

Doing that they could help new players and old players alike. It would even give the older-and-dedicated players something to spend their excess IP on besides hextech stuff.

Extrasolar2 votes

Yup. That feeling when they tell you that you should have custom rune pages for every champion that you play (and even multiple variations, depending on your lane opponent), but then you look at how much even a third of a page costs...

I found a way around this

  1. only play AD or AP champions
  2. make a page dedicated to those champions
  3. Make a support or tank page or w/e
  4. Now you have all you need

I can't stop spending my IP so its impossible for me to get them

adjoth1 votes

Biggest issue for new players, Champions or Runes/Pages. Until you own every champion this is going to happen. Plus while being more selective in your pick don't help if your enemy isn't You could easily need 8 Rune pages just between your two chosen role, more if your a support main. Also you might want to try new champions or roles and now your out of luck.

BigBellBrute1 votes

Well an AP and AD page are good enough to start with. And level 2 runs are only 1 IP. So that's plenty to get your feet wet with. Save up your 6300 for a 2 rune page for one sale and you'll have four. That's easily enough for AP and AD tanks plus AP and AD attackers. Sure some champs may do a little better with a custom rune page. But those four generic pages will ge good enough for a long time. If someone plays support they could add a 5th for supports like Soraka. Then you can replace your level 2s with threes. And there will be runes common to multiple pages.

OtakuBurrito1 votes

Meanwhile I bought all my rune pages and runes I did and did not need easily.

Umio1 votes

or you could just buy all the tier 2 runes which are very comparable to the tier 3 . .

Dynikus1 votes

If you're going into ranked with t2 runes, you're putting your team at a disadvantage.

adjoth1 votes

Not to call you out, but that might be why you have that bronze icon. Just saying. Plus there is a lot of really good ones only in tier 3 and a lot more to chose from, not to mention the improvement from tier 2 to 3.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

You get two rune pages for free. You get to queue for 2 roles.

Problem - no problem?

Also prior to this, you only really needed an AD and AP page. Rune pages go on a 2 for 1 sale at least once per season (often twice).

Your cost estimates have got to be way off. I've played about 700-800 normal games and around 125 ranked games. Add in maybe 200 special games, and we're looking at 1000-1250 total games played. I have 10 rune pages, all filled out (and about 50 champions). Yes, I used sales extensively.

FatTaco1 votes

They should be free, biggest reason is runes give a disadvantage to anyone without them so any upcoming level 30s who want to play certain champions will be at a disadvantage but for now I'll just say I had to grind and grind and grind for a long time and I have all runes and 31k IP sitting on my account from years of playing, I remember a long time ago realizing how long it took to grind runes for the first time when I played the old version of Trundle, there was a guide on solomid that recommended 9 flat CDR runes because Trundles pillar had a very long cool down and it was a jungle guide and Trundles kit was so limited you had to use pillar a lot when ganking, back then I was one of the only Trundles I saw most of the time because he was so niche and unpopular but I felt cool for playing him so I grinded and grinded and grinded and took me so long to get those CDR runes but afterwords it made me want to just get them all so I never had to deal with looking at a guide and saying "damn I don't have those runes". These days I don't have as much time or patience so I'm glad I did grind them years ago.

adjoth1 votes

Free might be a bit much but it be cool if you could unlock them once you hit 30. Going into placement without a couple of good rune pages is harsh, The role matchmaking system was a big help in this regard since it can limit your options, but your still going to need more unless your just gonna be a hard main (Same champion regardless of role).

Spartan117101 votes

i just have standard ad and standard ap. I adjust to the champs i play rn. So i basically only buy runes not rune pages.

adjoth1 votes

Since you cannot edit them to fit your situation you'd need them filled out before hand so you'll need more pages. Which can get harder if your still buying champions like most new players will be. Plus not every game is the same, a standard page can only go so far, also its nice to have specialize pages for champions you more frequently play and/or play against.

CerealBoxOfDoom1 votes

if you play enough you'll catch the discounts

or you could just buy the luxury, you don't need 3 or more pages for only a few roles.

PapaGreg211 votes

If it makes you feel better, most of us don't have more than an AD and AP rune page anyway because nobody wants to grind forever to fill those things out. It's basically Riot's best way to think of an IP sink

adjoth1 votes

Unless you've been playing for years your not gonna have a lot, but someone who who know what they are doing can build a page just to fight you, which could put you at a disadvantage.

astralwit1 votes

Rune prices should be half of what they are. It's kind of ridiculous for stuff like Hybrid Pen marks.

Spoofghoul1 votes

Your first runepages What if your first extra page cost 100 ip and first 90 tier 3 runes just cost like 10 ip Then you can fill 3 runepages for 1000 ip Which seems like a good start to improve new player experience. ** Achievements** Aditionally bonus IP & XP gains for completing certain achievements like;

  • Playing 10/20/30/40/50 games without dying
  • Taking down 10/20/30/40/50 drakes
  • Spotting an enemy with a ward 25/50/75/125/150 times
  • Taking down 10/20/30/40/50 Towers
  • Taking down Rift Herald 5/10/15/20/25 times
  • Taking down Baron Nashor 5/10/15/20/25 times
  • Taking down Elder dragon 5/10/15/20/25 times
  • Acquiring 1000/2000/3000/4000/5000 CreepScore

These would then have been the easy achievements as you accumulate them eventually but you gain them for doing usefull things in league. Additionally completing a whole achievement lets say killing 50 drakes will also get you extra xp to level up quicker.

Challenges More difficult achievements with possibly better rewards could be added aswell.

For example, take down 2 turrets per game on average over your next 10 games. If challeneg is completed you can do a more difficult version the next one requires you to take down 3 turrets on average over your next 10 games, and then 4 on average and onward to 5 and 6.

The goal The idea is to give bonuses to ip gains for completing certain task/objectives and challenges rewards could possibly even go as far as hextech crafting materials like key shards and boxes after completing a certain amount of achievements.

A system which rewards you for completing tasks which help you improve your gameplay and then some challenges to further improve your gameplay. Gaining additional IP/XP and Hextech loot for doing so

It's an easy system which will help out new players alot. The extra bonus XP and IP wont do too much for any of us veteran players as we probably don't need it that much but its very welcome to new players as it will help improve their gameplay and by improving their gameplay they will level up quicker and gain acces to more runes and champions. For us vets its a nice extra toy, especially the challenges which can get very difficult to complete, and the hextech loot we can get is a nice bonus. But since challenges can't be redone indefinitely we can only get limited loot.

Possible issues

The only things i can see which might be problematic with this system is smurfs abusing it. It would make things faster for them give them easier acces to runes and champs. All they will do is go and do these objectives, which will help them win the game but you can see how it is annoying when a 3 sumrf on your team refuse to end simply to grab ALL turrets drakes the herald gain 1000 CS in a game take several elder drakes and nashors etc etc, just stalling out the game a ton simplky to complete more tasks so they can level faster. So perhaps a certain limit can be put on how many objectives towards achievements can be done each game. I dont really like this countermeasure but i dont know of a better one except rito actually cracking down on smurfs by using imei & IPnumbers to identify smurf accounts and account link them together after which the highest achieved rank/mmr on their mains would be usid in their smurf accounts matchmaking. Not sure if thats all possible im not an IT guy.

adjoth1 votes

I think there is a system to prevent rewards getting to high for long games, but yes, faster game should affect your IP rewards. It's even worst if they end of losing the game due to one mistake. As for catching smurfs there is ways to do it, but while legal its frond upon. Plus the idea of smurfs isn't totally a bad thing, your likely to suffer because of it and its not cool, but its not 100% bad. Smurfing is a minor issue to begin with, Since your just a likely to get a Smurf on your team as the enemies (well not really but close enough) and since Smurfs tend to climb faster (assume they're good) they'd eventually stop showing up in your games. Thats why you should ignore any claims of smurfing, they are in a game with you for a reason outside of start of the season.

Spoofghoul1 votes

smurfing stil sucks for new players though

Honestly these smurf accounts should be linked with the main account, yea ppl wont like it but new players need ot be protected from it at the very least.

adjoth1 votes

Honestly it'd be a great system to link smurf accounts with there "main" but the main reason for smurfing is (by my own evaluation).

  1. You want to play with new players to teach them the ropes
  2. You just want to pwn some n00bs
  3. Playing at your current level is taxing, mentally so you opt for some easier games.

The first is constructive and is actually easily dealt with, if a player is pre-30 you could group them against others in the same situation or just leave it be, its not in a terrible sport right now. The only major draw back is high level players partying with new players since the matchmaking system cannot balance such unbalanced well without dropping similarly high level players down to lower levels.

The second and third point are connected and are the main issues when i comes to smurfing. So by linking account (if you could get people to do so) would help against this. But since this would be an opt-in type of situation it's hard to enforce.
