That's the point of the chests, though. They force you to learn and play different champions.

Except it's not really about learning the champion.

It's about stealing as much cs and as many kills as possible.

Well, kind of. If you personally have to get an S, then I could see the argument, but since it's anyone on your premade, it kind of defeats the purpose (if that was the purpose).

For example, I can queue as a first time Aatrox with my friend who mains akali, and as long as they get an S, I get a chest. Then I'll play my main and get an S while they stumble around as Aatrox and they'll get a chest. Sure sometimes it takes a couple games, but it's pretty consistent.

must be nice to have friends to play with. ive been playing league since s7 beginning and i can count my premade games on 1 hand. sometimes i get invites and what not but then we just sit there and wait for others to invite or wait for someone to go do something quick, etc etc. annoying. ill play solo q all day and not wait on anyone

JonneeG1 votes

If you'd like to queue up sometime, I'd be willing to, I'm fine with just going duo and ignoring most of the dead time. Feel free to add and invite me whenever.

Snowman Arc1 votes

I had quite a lot of friends to play with but a lot of them quit the game because they either got bored of it or for real life reason. I also broke up with my girlfriend who was also playing League, so now for the past year or so, I've only been playing solo. Honestly, sometimes it's better. You get to do whatever you want, without worrying if you ruin your friends' gaming experience.

exactly. theres over 150 champs in this game and you have 50k mastery on 1...? time to switch it up. theres ALOT of good champs out there, idk why anyone would limit themselves to just one so they could be an "expert" at it

JonneeG2 votes

Maybe they like a specific playstyle? Perhaps they want to play the game differently than you? Maybe they don't find many other champs enjoyable? Who knows? I certainly don't, which is why I would hope to be slower to assume motives and actions of a group of potentially diverse people.

If anything, another question could be "Why doesn't riot reward people for becoming an 'expert' at a champ?", or "Why are people allowed to get carried by pre-mades getting S's instead of earning chests themselves?"

Snowman Arc1 votes

Getting mastery points on champions doesn't mean much. You see a lot of people having millions of mastery points and they are in bronze. Also, if they don't want to play other champions, then they have to deal with the fact that they just won't get chests.

JonneeG1 votes

I don't believe I said mastery points meant anything about skill. I think we agree there. I'd say that mastery points show the amount of time that you've committed to playing a specific champ

If I'm an absolutely awful adc player, and I get hard carried by a premade yi, they will get an S and I will get a chest. Have I learned how to play that adc in 1 game? Maybe, but not necessarily?

On the contrary to the original post, If the goal is to have people learn how to play a champ, I'd suggest chests be tied to a separate mastery stat that resets each season. Once you get an arbitrary number of points with a champ, you get a chest. No luck or friends involved

After getting X amount of mastery points, (eg 30,000) have I learned how to play a champ?

30k points is about 30 wins, or about 200 losses. The true number will be somewhere between those 2. By then, because I've invested the time, I'd hope to have actually learned the champion in 30+ games.

If my premade carries me, I still get the experience of 30 games on the champ; maybe by the end of it I won't be so heavy?

I understand that there's an argument that in practice it will bring in bots to farm mastery, but in that case some work around would have to be found. (eg. pausing mastery point generation on very long losing streaks, Report function being improved for botting, etc)

i do agree with the second part of that. so if you play premades all day and you have good friends yoiu coiuld get chests even if you stank. meanwhile i play solo prolly 95% of the time and i get all my own rewards. oh well, thats life for ya. not fair

A solution I proposed in a comment below would be to get XX,000 mastery points on a champ each season to get a chest (not repeatable within a season), then you have to learn to play the champ either decently (winning), or a lot (losing).

Would that be an idea you'd agree with?

i just wish they would revert how difficult it is to get an S rank back to last season. back then if i ever went 10/1/10 with however much cs. i KNEW i was getting an S rank. now you just never know its so random i swear. one game last night we stomped them and i went 9/0/7 with over 100 cs and a forfeit at like 20 mins. got an A- rank. other games i go 18/6/10 and i do get an S rank.. makes no sense

JonneeG1 votes

Yeah, I feel you, Rito is weird like that. If anything, I'd be fine if they made it more difficult than last season, and actually told us exactly what they wanted (like a literal list of the requirements on each champ).

ahferroin71 votes

Or play premades on ARAM.

Snowman Arc1 votes

Well, ARAM is not the place that you learn a champion.

ahferroin71 votes

Just starting, yeah, it's not the best place. Once you have a decent idea of how to play someone though, it's a reasonably good place to learn how to effectively team fight using them because you're teamfighting all the time.

My point though was that if you just want chests, playing premades on ARAM is a reasonably reliable way to get them.

Well, ARAM is not the place that you learn a champion.

ARAM is a great low-stress way to learn the mechanics of champions. It does not however always translate well into a regular summoner's rift game. As a mostly ARAM player my weakness in summoner's rift is laning phase.

Wait, we can control the frequency of key drops? As far as I know you get them for receiving honors. If your teammates don't honor you, even if you do well, you don't get keys. Isn't that considered unlucky?

Just play diferent champions or find one friend and trade chest with him. Why do you want chests anyway? you only play one champion and provably alredy own a skin for him/her.

As much as i would love your idea, there is a good reason Riot might not ever take it into consideration.

Riot intentionally want you to earn one chest per champion every year in hopes that you play more champions instead of being a one-trick. Riot want you to play more champions, because they want to keep your interest in the game. And to hopefully discover a new main for you. Which they hope you will get addicted to playing. Once then, it's a matter of time before you decide to buy skins for your newfound favourite champion. Hextech Crafting is nothing but a system to get people to grind and become addicted. All wrapped up in a nice shiny cover that promises free prizes.

This marketing method is especially effective for new unguided players who do not have a clue how the addiction systems and marketing of League works. Chances are, when you are new, you'd most likely want to play more and more champions, hence the reason so many of them are locked behind such high Blue Essence prices. Not because they're top-tier level of difficulty (Darius), but because Riot wants you to grind, which leads to an inevitable addiction, which leads to you buying RP, which is what Riot wants.

All thanks to the brilliant marketing stategy of League of Legends.

Fuck that. I've played this game for longer than I care to admit. I've played every champions and know which ones I like the most. Let me still earn things with them. Screw the shady business practices.

Oh, I'm a consumer. Of course I feel this way.

fuck

Nanolathe111 votes

you make it sound like theres nothing left to work towards after you get a chest on a champ. the mastery levels should keep you busy after you have a chest. and i swear they made changes this season to how hard it is to get a S rank on a champ anyways. i dont even play most of my mastery champs anymore because if i play them and dont get an S its a waste of time really. at least lower mastery champs youre still building towards a mastery level and not only going for S ranks.

Sex Crazed Eve1 votes

I'm already Mastery 7 on my favorite champion. I've been that for a while. Let me earn something on this champion that I like to play. I don't like other champions enough to play them every game.

is mastery 7 as high as it goes? S+ are pretty tough to come by these days.

Sex Crazed Eve1 votes

It is!

TwitchInMyPants1 votes

Honestly that'd be a fine change, that's a fuckton of games on the same champ to actually have the potential to try for another S. Given chests are a grind anyway I think setting some number of mastery points to reset makes sense.

Would be nice if RIOT was like Blizzard and champs had unlimited levels and we got a chest at every level. The chest we get for an S could be a special epic chest with a better chance for gems or something else good in it.

But they are far too cheap for that.
