Seems like every time I decide to roam to help my team is like either get a kill, dragon or herald or you loose lane automaticaly against your enemy that never leaves lane. Why is roaming such high risk? I feel like the best option is staying in lane no matter what untill you get tower but by that time you other lanes might already be behind thats not worth roaming anymore

Generally you want to roam when you have just pushed your wave out and it is crashing into the enemy tower. This way by the time you get back to lane, the wave should be just reaching your tower and you can cs under tower so that you don't lose the gold from when you were gone.
You also don't want to roam if the lane you are roaming to is pushed up to the enemy tower (unless they are low and you plan to dive). If the enemy laners are farther than halfway across the lane (there is some leniency if your teammates and you have cc), you should be able to kill on the roam.
Laura ß1 votesI play top mainly riven, last game the enemy irelia was playing so passive and waiting for me to push lane to tower and I decided to roam mid and jungle but never got anything and meanwhile Irelia just farmed and pushed lane, I felt like it was better for me to stay in lane and try to kill Irelia and the tower. Once Irelia got stronger she just 1v1 me and I lost lane and game.
Automated Riven1 votesIrelia beats riven like all the time post six. Trying to kill her is a waste of time. You should be shoving into her and roaming mid and looking for tp plays bot. And bonus points if you can collapse with your jungle and kill her when she attacks the tower. make sure you pop blasting plant before roaming tho.
D4M2X01 votesi think if you see the enemy mid+jungler roam bot but havent instantly gotten kills on arrival its probably worth going bot and clearing up before they take ur turret or kill everyone. its never good to yoyo, you have to be sure everything you do has a high chance of success. i generally just push and hope my team doesnt get fucked so it becomes worth and when my laner starts walking back mid ill either catch him out or ill roam bot as he has to def tower :D!
bywords701 votesthe best time to roam is the when enemy is completely denied vision of the river, this is from your team using control wards. also when the minion wave is preferably crashed in the enemy turret, but you can roam if you know a fight will start and you covered your bases with control ward.
you could also just sit in the control ward and ambush the enemy mid laner who tries to roam after they notice you're missing.
