I just played a game as a Shielding-based Enchanter Support (rant targeted at Lulu/Janna/Karma)

  1. It was not fun.
  2. It was not satisfying.
  3. It took no decision making other than following my ADC and pressing E on cooldown.
  4. Shielding had no skill expression. It had a 90% uptime (4 second duration with a 4.5 second cooldown).

PLEASE NERF THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF SHIELD DURATION. I'm not shielding my ADC from anything - I'm essentially a walking +500HP buff for him. This is shit gameplay.

  1. Opinion

  3. Then youre playing them wrong 4A. Wrong, youre using the shields wrong then. 4B. Seems exaggerated, whered you get these numbers

I find Enchanters fun and that playing them to their full potential is highly underrated

A calculator. The numbers posted are for Karma. Lulu E actually has 100% Shield uptime.

Ok youre right there. But Karma's kit in general has always been a problem, which is why Riot tries to avoid Karma becoming meta. Also not gonna defend lulu bc fk that champ.

Jannas has a 5 second duration with a 5.5 second cooldown. It's all three of them.

but who said i liked that either. all im trying to say is keep opinions out of arguments

It's really not an opinion. It was my experience. I'm sure some simple-minded morons think pressing E for 40 minutes is fun - I'm just not one of them.

How are points 3 or 4 even remotely wrong? If a shield has 90-100% up-time, the less you use it, the more inefficient your use of the ability is. You drop that up-time to like 30%, and you actually have to consider when and how you use the ability. A shield that lasts 1.5 seconds can block just as much damage as one that lasts 5 seconds - but you don't just get to artificially increase your ADCs health pool.

You not liking supports is 100% your opinion and your opinion isnt everyone elses. That is literally all im trying to say

The hell did you get downvoted for this?? This is 100% fact.

Really? I main adc but when I'm autofilled (or I just want to play Supp) I play Janna or Nami and it's really fun and satisfying for me.

DarkSoul19941 votes

Nami is in another boat entirely.

saltran1 votes

I talked about Nami because she's an enchanter aswell, even if she heals instead of shielding.

But I get that you were talking only about shield enchanters: I personally don't even have Lulu and so I don't play her but I even play more Karma than Nami anyway (18K mastery on Karma and 14K mastery on Nami). And for Karma the "just press E" on the adc is only true in late game where you don't have dmg and you'll be blown up if you get closer to cast W, in majority of the game Karma is a offensive supp and lane bully with nice roams and good jungle squirmishes.

So in my own and honest opinion the shield enchanters I play are fun, if they were boring I wouldn't play them while I can understand that ppl like you find them boring and unfun champs.

Okay, I'll walk back my post a little here. I don't think Karma as a whole is boring - I actually like the way her primary abilities interact with her passive and her mantra.

What is boring and what is not satisfying about her kit is that shield timing is not meaningful enough. Believe it or not, I actually have 90k Mastery on Nami. There was a time where if I got Support, there was about a 90% chance I would play Nami that game. My beef isn't with people that want to buff up their ADC and peel for days. My beef is with Champions that do this without creating interactive gameplay with meaningful decision-making.

Nami and Soraka don't have 100% up-time on their heals. They don't just get to spam their heals off cooldown. In order to efficiently use their heal cooldowns, they have to time their heals with the moment their adc takes a chunk of damage and they need to know how much they heal for and how much HP the adc has missing.

On the other hand, a Lulu with 45% CDR and Rank 5 E has 100% up-time on her shield. As long as she sits there spamming her E, her shield timing will be 100% efficient. Karma and Janna will be no lower than 90% efficient.

By contrast, the very best Soraka and Nami players are probably about 70-90% efficient with their use of heals.

Why is this not target at healing from the likes of Soraka/Nami/Sona?

  1. Grievous wounds exist.
  2. You actually have to wait for someone to take damage before you can heal them.
  3. Their heals actually have some sort of hefty cost or condition.

Actually Sona shields and heals with her W. Nami and Soraka can shield with Aery.

I tend to keep Sona off this list because she really doesn't have a clear identity (she's just as much Shield-based as she is Heal-based, but at the same time she has the hard-engage on her ult that no other enchanter support has and...her kit is just a mess).

Aery is a general shield. This thread is targeted at Shielding-based Enchanter Supports. If I started talking about general shielding I'd have to start talking about mages, wardens, vanguards...and they're not problematic right now.

I get that. But Lux is pretty bad with shields and so is Orianna.

Also, if true damage didn't exist, I'd be more apt to agree. Not saying by much though and enough to influence anything.

Soraka is not a mess lol. She is mainly a healer with light CC to support. She manages her own health (Landing Q's, positioning, and ult) and manages her allies health (ult and W/empowered w).

Also what do you mean her ult is hard engage? Her only hard engage is flash exhaust and E (if you even use exhaust on her)

Oh come on man Karma’s consistently been sub par

nerfing duration alone isn't enough the cool downs are also extremely low

DarkSoul19941 votes

Nerfing duration is a starting point. It doesn't change how much damage the shield can potentially block, but it still manages to force players to think more meaningfully about how they use it.

Oleandervine1 votes

They're not fun if you're only pressing E the entire time. But in my experience with Lulu, Janna, and Karma, I usually have a lot of reasons to press the other ability buttons too, not to mention 1-3 for my active items.
