"LOCK IT IN" - New Champ select feature concerns

Kei143··18 votes·4,237 views

New champ select coming in 6.1, and requires you to click "LOCK IT IN" in order to select your champ, else it will result in a dodge. Source from leak patch notes for 6.1

[{quoted}](name=Patch 6.1 Leak,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=jEn8JzL5,comment-id=,timestamp=2016-01-12T18:08:01.487+0000) Bans and picks must be locked in. Hovering doesn't count! Failing to lock in a ban or pick will result in a dodge with a time penalty.

I have a few following tendancies

  • 10% of the games, I don't have enough time to properly select my champ, runes, masteries and summoner skills. Normally that happens when I'm last pick
  • 50% of the games the champion is auto locked for me because I was in the masteries page

I'm not too sure what the intent here is, but with the already reduced champ select timer, I'm fearing I won't have enough time to think who to pick (based on team comp and enemy team comp), pick the champ, select the proper runes & select the right masteries.

I'm wondering if someone can give me the insight of this design and maybe what the PBE community thinks of the "LOCK IT IN" feature seeing they have tested this before.

They're doing it because the new Champion Select goes one Player at a time instead of grouping it into 2s AND has a new Phase to go through. It's to decrease the overall time waiting for everything to be chosen.

And the length of champion select was the least of everybody's worries.

Except for some geniuses at Riot Germs.

Igotlazy4 votes

Personally I think it was a logical change. You also have to factor in the new Pick Intent Phase. You could be in there for around an extra 2-3 minutes compared to before if everyone uses all their time. What are you losing exactly by having to click Locked In? You have plenty of time to ready yourself between Pick Intent and the Trade Phase.

What do I lose? Most likely LP, queue time and promo series.

First of all the whole thing about the champion I picked being hovered by default is flat out retarded.

Sure I will most likely play that champion, but why do my enemies have to know that in advance? And why do I have to potentially pay for that completely worthless feature with all of those 3 things I mentioned before?

Your enemies don't know that you're going to pick that Champ. Pick Intent only shows YOUR team who you are planning to pick. The enemy team sees nothing and you're free to deviate from your intended pick if you find that it's a bad match-up.

It's still the only cause of forced lock-in.

Before you started with no champion picked, so if you didn't pick any you were thrown out. Now the champion is picked for you, so you have to accept the choice to not be thrown out.

You really can't see a problem with that?

The champion is not picked for you. The only thing that the system forces onto you is the role and even then it must pick from two options that you yourself told it to pick from. You got Jungle? You can still pick any champion to take into the Jungle. What makes you think that the system picks your champion?

Vistha Kai1 votes

The point flew past you.

Or was the fact that the moment, you hit the champion select a champion you selected is hovered over for you, changed?

Because if it wasn't then your whole paragraph was pointless and not a continuation of what I was talking about.

I don't think you understand how the new system works. Nothing is picked for you and you can change your champ at anytime. Hell, you don't even have to pick a champ for the "pick intent" phase if you don't want to.

I don't think you understand exactly how the new Champion Select works. Let me give you a summary.

  1. Select the Queue
  2. Pick 2 roles, a Primary and a Secondary. The options are Top, Jungle, Mid, Bot, Support and Fill for both.
  3. Enter the Queue
  4. Find a match
  5. The system then selects a role for you based on either your Primary or your Secondary (you'll never get any other Role but the ones you selected).
  6. Pick Intent Phase. Click a Champion that you intend to play. Only your allies are made aware of what you selected, not your enemies.
  7. Ban Phase (last 3 players to pick on both teams get to ban).
  8. Pick Phase (goes 1 player at a time now instead of in groups of 2).
  9. Trade Phase
  10. Game Starts

It's actually an immense improvement over the current Draft Mode. In practice it works, trust me I've used it multiple times.

So this whole thing about having to lock-in a champion to not get thrown out is even more pointless than I initially thought.

Jeez man, I mean the game literally forces itself to the front of your desktop when it's your time to choose. Just click the damn lock-in button. A Mouse click takes what, 1.42 calories? You'll live.

All Riot is trying to do, is save a couple of seconds of time. It's fine.

It's like you haven't read OP at all.

All that pointless change does is screw up some people. Nothing more. Nothing less.

That's an isolated case. Personally I always click Lock In and then prepare runes + masteries as others pick or during the Trade Phase. But hey, that's just me. If we had actual Stats instead of arbitrary 10%s and 50%s from one guy then maybe we can actually make a proper conclusion. Honestly though I give the community 1 week, 2 tops before they get used to it.

Also like I said it's not pointless, it's to save time.

Vistha Kai1 votes

What if I told you that people who weren't immediately locking in their champions, won't do it any sooner now?

TotalJerk2 votes

That time was necessary, though. Most people typically drag out the timer to discuss strategy with their team. There's 5 people who have never met before; they need as much time as possible to get their shit together before the game starts.

Ya but you're getting it back through Pick Intent. So at the end of the day, nothing changes. Same amount of time through and through.

TurquoiseYoshi5 votes

I personally think it's good. Your problems can be fixed by: 1: Presetting masteries and runes (that's why you can have 20 pages).

That's it. That's all you need to do. There's no way that you have such complex strategy that 20 pages isn't good enough for you and you have to majorly edit it every game. Picking a champion in time shouldn't be an issue if you've been paying attention to the draft, and heck, you can even set masteries before your pick if you know who you want (which should be quicker to decide with how the new champ select works).

Now, champ select won't take 11 million years and have 87 dodges every time. It optimizes speed through early communication rather than late communication and rush changes.

3Power2 votes

I dunno man, I think a lot of people are gonna dodge if they get whatever role they marked 2nd. I'm in the middle of mastering karthas right now, and I'd rather not have to break up the grind to play as an adc or something.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

Well then pick a second position where you can play Karthus (Mid+Support/Jg/Top?). It's really not too big of a problem, especially when the game tries to put you at your first position in most situations.

3Power2 votes

If I put mid/support, I'll get support every time, guaranteed.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

Then put Mid/Top. If you want Level 5 mastery on everyone, Karthus is viable in most positions.

3Power1 votes

"WTF Karthus top"

"Dude, just ban it, I'm not playing with trolls"

Your teammate has banned karthas

Or...

The enemy mid has chosen karthus as their champion

This new system sucks ass dude, just admit it.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

It's not that uncommon/trolly. AP top laners such as Singed, Lissandra, Rumble, and even Cho'Gath, Cassio, and Kassadin are very common.

Yes, because getting picked away is a normal occurrence in the new system and was totally a non-factor in the live one. Absolutely.

3Power1 votes

It was a non factor in TEAMBUILDER. Which this is supposedly the "better in every way" upgrade of.

I can't imagine that scenario ever becoming reality. Everyone knows Karthus in workable in most positions and nobody in a normal game is going to go to an extreme like "Ban that troll pick" over something as moderate as top lane Karthus. You get the most idiotic stuff in normals, even in draft.

In ranked it -could- get banned on occasion but you shouldn't have an "I JUST WANT TO PLAY THIS ONE CHAMPION IN THIS ONE POSITION" attitude in ranked regardless.

The only people disadvantaged by the new picking system are those who are set exclusively on playing one champion in one role and you can easily duke it out with people in blind pick for that.

The whole point of teambuilder was that YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO.

You really should ATLEAST have 2 roles covered if you're going into Ranked. Anyway apparently the system can tell if you've been continually given your second option and will try to get you with your primary if that's been the case. Plus you don't NEED to play the roles the system gives you if you discuss with your Team and everyone finds a compromise.

3Power2 votes

Hey buddy, psst. Come here.

I DON'T GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT RANKED.

I give two shits about hitting LVL5 mastery on every champ. I don't like breaking from one to work on another.

Igotlazy1 votes

Well good thing it's only affecting Draft and Ranked Queues right?

Teambuilder too

Igotlazy2 votes

Shhhh, we don't talk about that.

That's funny, I could have sworn it was REPLACING TEAMBUILDER.

Jorencice1 votes

Wait..... u want to get EVERY SINGLE CHAMPION to 5 but you don't want to play EVERY SINGLE CHAMPION?...

I'm so confused.

3Power2 votes

I want to play them one at a time. I mastered Ryze, then moved onto Xin, then moved onto Karthus. I don't want to be splitting my focus between multiple champs at the same time.

I did that back in the days, that system really didn't work well for me as I will have 6 pages for my Malphite flex pick (top / jg / support). I still have a Morg flex pick, Kennen flex pick, Quinn flex pick etc etc. I find myself looking at the page name going "Do I use my Tanky Malphite page this game? Whats in my Tanky Malphite? its not optimized for this game", Not to mention there is alot of redundancy of similar champs having similar pages.

So now I have 9 pages: 18-12-0 / 18-0-12 / 18-6-6 / 12-18-0 / 0-18-12 / 6-18-6 / 12-0-18 / 0-12-18 / 6-6-18. Any other page are just variations of these combinations.

The optimization of the "Tanky Malphite" page for my Kench Jungle is the same as optimizing my 0-12-18 page. But of course, I still do sometimes not have enough time to change everything.

I suck :( Gimme a better system

Kratos2632 votes

I agree, and I'm sure it's the same for many other players.

Truly Prideful2 votes

Yeah I'm not really a fan of it. It also reduces the time that I get to actually discuss a pick in chat. I don't really get why they thought hovering picks was a bad thing.

Vistha Kai2 votes

Well, I see another great change is about to roll out. This starts to remind me of Warframe so much.

No, that's not a compliment.

MunchCrunchLunch2 votes

i dont like that at all. sometimes when you make a last second choice. u dont have time to hit the bar.

A Latte Deaths1 votes

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but are you forgetting about the "pick intent" phase? Before the banning phase starts, players are given 30 seconds to choose champions they intend to play. I feel the pick intent phase solves the issue you're concerned about.

Kei1433 votes

Not really, pick intent works for those "i'm going to Yasuo mid / top" people who know what they are going to pick.

For me (and maybe a few others as well) who care about team comp / counter team comps, we do spend a good amount of time thinking.

Though if you do show me a intended yasuo pick, it might help me think less of what to synergize with, but I'll still consider the enemy comp when doing so. (which is why I hate first pick)

A Latte Deaths1 votes

Yeah, that was something I thought of almost immediately after posting my comment. I suppose we'll just have to see how it is for ourselves when the new champion select hits live.

Hopefully Riot will increase the timers or revert the "lock in or dodge" change if it ends up being a big issue.

saihLfVQ341 votes

just change runes and masteries after you lock in, problem solved.

Kei1431 votes

Do you know how much time you have to change everything if you are final pick?

Right now its 10 seconds after everyone locks in. Where I'd have to select runes, spells, swap champs, and adjust masteries. I already have trouble doing all of it right now (as noted, 10% of my games, but more like 50% if I'm final pick), which I don't want to be penalized to not ahve enough time to optimize my masteries based on match ups / comps.

blkKalameet1 votes

Im more concerned about the client randomly bugging and not letting me click to lock my champ in.

This has happened to me and my friends a lot, but it just means we wait out the time and have it locked for us. Now we get punished for dodging if we get this bug?

Embertine1 votes

Has happened to me too. I've had to select another champion, then re-select the one I wanted, just to fix the problem. With this new auto-dodge thing it could result in the client dodging for me when this bug happens. Which would later then cause me to get punished for dodging, of which the client is the one dodging and it isn't even my choice.

Levetimus1 votes

They're doing this so people wont pick their champ and go afk. Theyve stated multiple times that they want champ select to be a team process and not, "oh im first pick. lets pick my champ and go afk for five minutes". Regardless of their reasoning though i cant believe that so many people seem to have a problem with clicking an extra button. if youve played league of legends you should be use to hitting the mouse button by now.

Moer1 votes

The lock-in thing is absolute garbage, I lose more time either forgetting to lock in, or clicking lock in at the last second (which should work, I mean there's still technically time!) and not having lock in due to terrible responsiveness on your client, than getting a toxic player in my game. Way to good this is a good buffer for all the children under the required age to play this game.
