Thoughts from an Alistar Main

What I would like to talk about is the current Alistar bug on the PBE, which is his Headbutt (W) has been turned into a skill shot.

I think that this change could potentially solve a lot of problems that Riot has with Alistar, namely his ridiculous ganks when he is jungling or ganking another lane. If I'm not mistaken, Alistar cannot currently use his Headbutt - Pulverize combo if Headbutt is currently a skill shot. This means that this skill will be purely a disengage, or a situational displacement ability. The ability still serves its intended purpose while taking away Alistar's oppressive ganking / engage. Also, it would be possible to flash over Alistar whilst he is currently using his Headbutt. Originally, one would have to flash / dash at the exact moment before Alistar collided to avoid the skill (i.e. there's now more counterplay).

The question I want to end on is this:

If this change were to be considered seriously, would it be possible to buff his laning or jungling?

Now with the question out of the way, there are some ideas I had with changing Alistar's headbutt. What if it was more similar to Sion's ultimate? For example, Alistar would channel for a short amount of time and begin to charge. He would slowly gain movement speed (could possibly scale off movement speed), and push any enemies in his path either to the sides or directly backwards. Trample would be active throughout the charge. Alistar will not be able to self cancel the ability. The mechanic, I believe, would allow counterplay and be very rewarding for players. It also seems fitting that Alistar must displace himself to displace others, much like Malzahar's ultimate CCs himself to CC another person.

If any other forum dwellers have thoughts, please reply.

I would love to see the cow being played bot lane fulfilling his actual role as a tanky peel/disrupting support. That being said i sincerely hope they do not buff his solo laning/jungling. As we've seen in the past many many times (Lulu Zyra Soraka ) champions performing extremely well in off roles tend to be nerfed into oblivion even if they are somewhat balanced in their intended role. I don't want Alistar to take one step forward just to take two steps back.

I agree that I would hate to see him nerfed simply because he fulfills a niche role well. However, he is not a support as defined by Riot. His primary role (with no secondary) is that of tank. As a tank, he fits super well into the jungle and top lane. The reasons why he was nerfed was due to his oppressive, no counterplay laning / ganking. If his Headbutt was made into a skill shot which displaced him, I believe this would remove his oppressiveness. Riot would be free to buff his solo laning and jungling without the fear of op cow.

The only problem that I have with it is that it opens up uses for headbutt as an escape skill, as it's a ground targeted dash. Overall though I'd still say the net gains would outweigh this small problem.

Do remember that his new W is a skillshot move, as it opens a new path of making him a deceptively(kinda) mobile champion, which means he can W over a wall with ease when escaping from enemies, unlike the old Ali having to ward over the wall so he can W a monster.

To be honest, the change I outlined at the end of the my post would fix this. If he rammed into the wall like Sion does, that would certainly fix the issue and reward players for their positioning.

If I'm not mistaken, Alistar cannot currently use his Headbutt - Pulverize combo if Headbutt is currently a skill shot.

You are mistaken. Headbutt - Pulverize is intact, if a bit clunky because the skill is buggy. This isn't really relevant to his jungling though. Jungle Ali is perfectly fine coming up behind someone and just knocking them into his teammate. Using pulverize is not immediately necessary. If I'm still able to walk behind your tower and just punt you into my laner without taking damage, I can still be just as oppressive. So, no buffs to his jungling would occur even if he was losing headbutt pulverize, and since he didn't, he really wouldn't be getting any buffs there. Solo laning... eh? Maybe? Can't say I'm interested enough to consider it.

As for your headbutt idea, I'm not really sure that charging or channeling is a great mechanic for it. It makes it very hard to use reactively, which is a main component of the skill, and I can't really see how it would be more rewarding than immediately punting a fucker away. Responsiveness can be very rewarding, and losing that is not something that I think would be fun.

It would be easy to remove the combo, I think. I have played Alistar quite a bit in the jungle, and I rarely find situations where I can simply waltz around the turret and gank from behind it. Even so, his ultimate is on a two minute cooldown during the laning phase. Other junglers have more oppressive ganking tools, in my opinion, that are on a shorter cooldown or equal cooldown. They also have a better clear time, better damage at every point in the game to the point that they can build straight tank. They are not being nerfed simply because their gameplay patterns are acceptable. Xin Zhao can waltz around the mid lane turret whilst the enemy laner is pushed to it, knock him up almost instantaneously, and burst him down with the mid laner's help before dying. He could also simply knock them out of turret range with his ultimate. Jarvan IV can trap multiple champions into his ultimate denying them escape if they do not have flash / dash. Lee Sin can kick someone out from under tower, and dash out of tower range whilst shielding himself so that he takes no damage. All of these abilities are on an equal or lesser cooldown than Alistar's ultimate and combo. They are also just as oppressive, if not more because they are capable of doing more damage during the gank. When compared to other champions, Alistar's own oppressiveness is put into perspective. He deals less damage and relies on heavy coordination from his teammates.

I know that he didn't lose the combo. This is purely from a what if perspective inspired by the bug on the PBE.

I understand that reactivity is part of what makes the skill rewarding. Changing his Headbutt to a channeled ability would significantly change his design, but I think that this would fit better with his kit and theme. If not a channeled ability, I think making it a skill shot that reacts with walls like Poppy's E would be next best. It would offer counterplay and be more rewarding than simply reacting quickly. To be honest, I just really enjoyed watching people on the PBE flay multiple people into the air and in all directions. I want that.

All i can think about is ali's head flying off as a projectile to headbutt
