"Don't play ranked if you can't play X role"

Ramza Paradise··86 votes·10,549 views

Okay, this saying is starting to piss me off.

First, I'm an AP mage main. I "main" mid lane and support. I play an okay top, a meh adc, and a below average jungler.

I'm not going to spend time practicing my 5th role, because I only get it (If i'm lucky) every 10-15 games.

"Lol then how are you even Plat?" Because I'm good at my other roles. I'm a Plat level mid-support, I'm probably a silver level jungler. When I get that position more often than not I'm against a jungler main.

It's seriously stupid to expect every player to be godlike at every role. There's a reason people call out their preferences. Yes, you won't always get your role and you should be knowledgeable of the basics for every role.

Even pro players usually only play their one role, but they always get it because they have name recognition.

I have to disagree with you on your title, you should have basic enough knowledge to play each role. Should you be able to play every role perfectly? No. The reason I say this is because you get people who say: "I can only play mid" Ok, but the next team your with might not care. At some point, you WILL BE EXPECTED TO PLAY YOUR WORST OR LEAST FAVOURITE ROLE.

Asides from that, it's rude to all the players who do make sacrifices, and play for the team. What your time is too important to not bother learning?

I cant adc, doesnt matter cause there is always a doublelift wanna be that will instalock vayne for me <3 I prefer playing champs that like to be in the middle of a fight, my entire mentality prevents me from being able to position correctly on an adc XD

In champ select I just say "Cannot ADC, fill anything else" I've had to adc 3 times? in about 200 games. And only because people were arguing whether the person who locked above me was trolling by picking morgana mid and were trying to force her to support by locking zed or some crap >.> (Recent case of having to adc...really should have just dodged)

I was going to say something like this, but you said it before me.

Every player is going to be better at one or two roles than another, and going to be worse at one or two roles than another. Having basic knowledge of all of those roles is practically mandatory for playing Ranked in case you get picked with your worst role.

You don't have to be good at that role, you just have to be not bad at the role.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

I don't do ranked, so I could be wrong, but after silver isn't a "basic knowledge" of a role not good enough? Thought that silver/low gold represented basic knowledge and not much further, and in say Gold I if a player gets stuck in a role in which he/she has only basic knowledge of and is pitted against someone who mains that role, he/she is going to get steamrolled.

Jungle Lux God2 votes

I wouldn't know either because I also don't do ranked, but basic knowledge would probably get you as far as being able to not feed against those kinds of mains for that role.

This also doesn't include the fact that your basic knowledge of the role is still getting improved by your basic game knowledge that you build in the other roles. If you play other roles, your skill in, for example, the ADC role is still getting improved by your capabilities as a player.

Basic knowledge helps, but it doesn't really make you not feed after a certain point. I have basic knowledge of the adc role, yet I'm probably bronze adc, jungle is my main role and I'm comfortable mid/top, and I can make a decent support.

The reason I suck at adc is I'm horrible at mechanics.

At higher levels of skill/rank what is considered basic knowledge increases. Take ADC for an example at low levels it is just enough to safely farm. Then at some point you are expected to know how to follow up/work with the support. Then comes understanding of trading while CSing; and then on.

I would qualify that as basic knowledge at any level. That's the game we're playing. Playing solitaire = sitting and farming.

And this is why I have not played ranked yet. I'm a decent/good ADC (which I main), I know the basics of support and mid, but have never played them in Normals, so I'd probably need a few games to adjust to playstyle and playing against a real human who thinks and has reflexes as opposed to bots.

I know slightly less about jungling and would probably play bots for a while to figure out camp starts, pathing, which ones to use smite on and when, ganking, etc.

I'd probably start playing top more if I were to aim for knowing a few roles before going into ranked, because I've played it before in normals with a simple "play safe, get as much farm as possible, become tank for mid/late-game" mindset with Sion, and have had a few decent games. (Unless I'm up against Riven.)

I think all chat talked about this and I agree with Dash. Decent at 3 roles is really required for ranked at any level. Being competent at the other two should be mandatory.

You can basically skate through bronze by not feeding and playing around the obj timers.
You'd be surprised by how many people fail those two basic criteria. Few people at any level can carry 0/5 carries or 0/10 anyone at 20 mins.

Tarezi1 votes

Think I saw that episode, and I agree too. Which is why, again, I have not played ranked, since I doubt I've achieved a level of competence with top lane.

On a side note, are bronze players really that bad? It almost sounds like they're full of players who've just downloaded the game.

Aboylova922 votes

I generally go into games saying my preferred role, and my least preferred. I can play all except for ADC. The basics I get, farming, objective control, ect, but unless that support is going to carry me hard, don't expect much out of me ADC wise "carrying" wise. Jungle, Top, and Mid are all good, and support is pretty decent. Personally I've almost never ran into a game where I've been forced into ADC as I go into every lobby telling them I'd prefer not to have it.

WhiskerWow1 votes

Mhm!

Although, if you cannot play a certain role well, make sure to tell your team anyways. They'll learn to not expect much from you, so they'll be able to compensate.

Ex: If you're adc, the support will focus more on peeling and keeping you safe instead of poking and going for kills. Ex: If you're jungle, they'll realize that the should not expect ganks to win their lane, and focus more on either solo-kills or ganking themselves.

Ramza Paradise1 votes

I'm confused because you're obviously missing the point.

I know every once in a while I'm going to play my weakest role, and I will. But when you %%%%% at someone for doing poorly in their weakest role vs. someone who mains that role, then have the audacity to tell them not to play ranked, that is the problem.

I will enter ranked and say "Mid or support pls" if I don't get those two, I will take Top, then ADC, then jungle. I know the absolute basics for jungling, but I don't enjoy the role and will try to avoid it when possible, and there is nothing wrong with that. I still have been able to climb the ladder.

Divewing1 votes

So when you put "don't play ranked if you can't play X role" you meant "don't play ranked if you can't play X role WELL"? If so I totally agree. Based on the title you have now I thought you were meaning people you can only play 3 roles and get told not to play ranked.

Totally agree.

That statement comes the majority of times from ppl that don't want to lend their role to some1 else because themselves are not good at it/them and try to put the blame on you for not being LCS good in all the possible roles with each possible pick against any possible matchup.

Also being good/decent in 4 roles out of 5 is more than enough.

Uhh... It's a video game that has 5 roles. None of them are overly complicated if you make intelligent decisions

ADC: Farm as much as possible, poke when its safe. Try not to over engage with support. Support: Try to zone enemy with position, get ADC as much farm as possible without going too hard. Don't do risky engages. Ward a lot. Mid: Don't feed, farm a lot, and look for roams. Top: Don't feed, farm as much as possible. Jungler: Know where enemy jungler is, support your lanes as much as possible to build momentum. Don't fall behind in levels.

Of course there are all sorts of things that encompass "playing the game good" throughout the game but that's an extremely generalized early game for each role.

"I ONLY PLAY MID IM LEAVING IF I GET STUCK AS SUPP"

Like I would rather have someone stomp on the floor above me for an hour that read some ass hat crying about how they play one role because thats what LCS teams do.

Every pro in this game supposedly has a "main role" and a "champion pool" but you don't get to challenger by playing like a bronze 5 when you have to play another role.

I believe its a delusion that you should expect to play your "main role" and "favorite champion" in every game to win. The reality is champions aren't that hard to learn even if it means watching a good person play that champion a few times to get some strategy hints. I have been in 4000+ games and nothing is more irritating than someone blaming their poor performance on a role they don't want to play.

TL DR: I disagree with your post.

I'm not saying anyone should say "I only play X or feed", I said that no where in my OP. But when I call my roles out, and end up with one of my weaker positions, I'll play my best, but the guy on the other team got his main, so you're at a huge disadvantage.

If you get stuck vs a plat adc/supp combo in bot lane and you are the support, I don't believe there is such a thing as "I play support at silver level"

YOU KNOW what bot lanes are trying to do if you are plat mmr. You don't position to get chain cc'd, you watch out for their jungler, and if you leave lane 30 cs behind the enemy at 15 minutes without feeding, you did your job. Communicating to your ADC that you don't feel confident and just want to play passive isn't the end of the game.

To believe that you can't lane against someone that's better at their role is ridiculous. They are "better" because of mechanics and strategy when their opponent makes mistakes. If you play safe you can always look for an opportunity later in the game to shine. If you can't mid lane against a plat Zed when your a "silver" Viktor withotu going 0/5/0, I feel like you got carried to your mmr.

I disagree with this, heavily, namely the last part. I get my role 7/10 games I play, so if I was any good, I could carry myself, say for me, to gold, if I made few mistakes in 5 or 6/7 of the seven games I got, and probably win 1-2 of the other games, and that isn't going to make you a better mid laner, or adc, or jungler.

I suck at adc, because I normally play people like olaf, aatrox, or hecarim, where their role, is to kill the enemy carries as fast as possible regardless of opposition, so when I go into a game as adc, I am not used to kiting, I am used to charging, I am not used to not being able to take one skill shot of damage, you simply aren't used to what the said role entails, yes you will pick up on things as time goes on, but are still not going to be any good is most of your games if you are facing someone that plays that role normally.

Me, my awareness of where to be at a given time is shit. If dragon is up, I try to stay at bot side, and that is about as far as my ability as a jungler goes, and the one mid laner I can play reliably is Karthus, because I am only an okay viktor for elo -- at best, so I end up picking karth basically every time I have to go mid, because he is the one mid I understand to a level where he is playable at my elo.

I think people should at least have a small pool of champions for each role, but to expect someone to be proficient at every role? That is insane, and quite simply ridiculous, because if someone is in their habits of another role, whether or not it is intentional, it is going to carry over most likely.

@AlI Chat Refereee

I agree but there is things I know people don't do when they jungle like jungler mains.

Counter Gank Counter Jungle Proper map pressure (Take top turret because lane just got double killed so they doing dragon) Time the enemy jungle camp and abuse those timings (oh his Blue comes up at 9:00 so I will gank bot lane because he will most likely be top side) Oh and my all time favorite is to out rotate Shaco/Eve so they don't get first blooded.

So if your argument is Herpaderp anyone can farm jungle and gank non stop your argument is weak. Also non support mains ususally dont drop wards or put them in the right places. I personally get shit on in mid because I am not used to the jungle pressure like in the other lanes (I get ganked under tower by level 6 usually) and I don't like mages. People bad at positioning as a squishy champ (tank/bruiser mains) are going to have a hard time playing adc because they cant melee mode all the time. It is silly to expect someone with only a few hundred games or so to be excellent at all roles so if they say "Jungle main can Top/Support well" and end up in mid lane and go 0/13 well that is on everyone is champion select not the person who sucks at mid to get destroyed by a viktor main.

Yes there is a lot to this game at a high level, but everything can and will backfire if someone out plays you. This game is not winnable every game based on a single players performance at their role.

I don't believe anyone that has a high MMR legitimately plays like a silver or doesn't know where to put wards when they aren't their main role.

That said, if (hypothetically) Mid Lane is your worst role JUST SAY IT'S YOUR WORST ROLE. In a lot of games I would have gladly given away my role if someone just spoke up and said they couldn't play the role that they were left with.

I've won games where players have said (as an example) 'No, ADC is my worst role' and I simply offered them my role (even if I'd already locked in a champion) and played it safe on something like Jinx or Sivir. Literally the only reason I don't main AD Carry is because my internet is being upgraded so it will be great but right now I could easily DC for a couple of seconds in a teamfight and lose the game.

Their is a difference between expecting you to be able to play in every role and asking you to carry in every role.

You should have the knowledge (since plat) of how to. I mean your a mid main, Have a pocket jungle Dia fiz or something.

Honestly not having a pocket jungle pick is super lazy. Know how to power farm the jungle and pretend you are a wondering mid consistently. It is not that hard.

It is harder to go into off lanes but even that is questionable arguments. Any mid should be able to figure out a top or 2 and any top main should have a top that will work in the mid lane. Hell when i was an ADC main i took ADCs mid cause my AP mages were shit.

The hardest off role to fill is ADC since that requires team work and a different philo. I am not saying it is the hardest role just the hardest mentality to switch to when not a main.

Is knowing more than one role a good idea? Yes.

Is knowing only one role a good idea? No.

Is knowing all five roles a requirement for ranked? No, that's just too generalizing. You should have a role you're good at, practice it, and just have a backup or two just in case.

In my opinion, I think it's fair that a player should understand the basics of jungling (pathing, how smite buffs work, and ganking/farming junglers), how different carries carry, and at least support basics (because everyone gets that one last pick). Know one of the solo lane roles, support basics, and either adc or jungle is one good way to do it, but not the rule.

I don't mind people who excel at certain roles, but I think everyone should at least be able to play support at a basic level. Like, it's often the last pick who has to support, and being last pick support is going to happen to everyone at some point.

Look man you shouldnt be in ranked if you "main" middle mage, because odds of you getting a team that you will always get mid is pretty low. Also keep in mind there is a big difference between "I can't play x role" and i am average at it.

Lastly if you are very weak at a certain role you better tell your team right off the bat of champ selection and it better be 1 role.....you see the problem with people like you and your argument is that you selfishly put the burden on EVERYONE ELSE to know every role to accommodate YOU. So yeah really stay out of rank if you cant play every role, because imagine if everyone on your team could only play the same role you can every game?

Dethryn1 votes

You're wrong. Don't play ranked if you can't play every lane at least decently.

Trylobyte1 votes

My problem with the 'Don't play ranked if you can't play X' argument is the fact that the person saying it usually expects you to play it as well as an actual main. You might know the basics of the role, but you're still going to get stomped since you have maybe 50 games of experience in that role and the other guy, who mains that role, has 500. They know all the little things you don't and they most likely know how to exploit the mistakes inexperienced people often make.

Khalibus1 votes

I agree with OP. People who say that are just being stupid.

There are two ways to be on average a plat level player. Be plat skilled at all roles equally and therefore have the same chance to win regardless of role, or be high plat skilled at one or two roles, enough to make up for the difference of the losses when you get stuck in other roles (which will happen infrequently enough to maintain rank). Whether they realize it or not, most players are much better at some roles than others. Brow beating someone for admitting it in champ select is foolish and anyone doing the brow beating and forcing someone into their worst position deserves their loss, particularly since it probably resulted in the unlucky circumstance of too many people maining the same roles getting matched together.

That's just a shortcoming of the system, not the player.

What you have to realize is the other team is dealing with the same issue, and probably has one or more people playing out of position too.

Auroramancer1 votes

Yeah, your title is very misleading.

There is a big difference between "I dont know how to play X role" and "I'm not too great at X role"

Some people refuse to play a role and will troll champ select because they "dont know how to play X role". The title seems to encourage players to not learn other roles, and by that merit, discourages teamwork outside of the current game. It's a team game, learn the team dynamic.

On the other hand, I agree with you that it is complete bullshit for people to call out "lol how are you plat/diamond if you aren't godlike in X role". I've been Diamond the last two seasons and my mid-lane is about as good as a Silver elo player, but my top-lane and jungling is Diamond level. I can hardly play mid-lane in normal queues without someone remarking about my rank and how my shitty mid-lane skills don't align with my rank. "No shit Sherlock that's why I'm not going out of my way to play mid-lane in ranked queues"

I can play all roles but I usually stick to top and jungle. Sometimes I'm too lazy to say anything at all in lobby. I'm not godlike at support or being the adc, but I can manage decently when I'm forced to pick one of these roles. That said I believe you are right but next time just ignore them and pick your role when you can. I know boards is a good place to come and relieve some stress others are putting on you. But everyone and their grandmother is a "mid or top" main - there will be times you draw the short stick and get whatever is left, so its really for your own benefit to get **decent ** at all of them.
