stop saying this its just not true, Riven is the one who is able to dictate the fights and when they start/finish not garen, riven's mobility can ensure she can escape this lane without dying

Garen has sustain. Riven doesnt. Garen maybe cant kill her. But neither she can kill him. And she needs to snowball to be efficient. Also when Garen hits 6 she cant enter prolonged fights with him, since his execute is better
BoxBox plays in a higher elo than you my friend and has said that Garen is probably Riven's single hardest match-up in lane. It's just not that bad because Garen is a useless sack of shit outside of lane, whereas a lesser lane counter like Renekton can do more with the lead he gets over Riven. If you have trouble against Riven in lane as Garen she is simply playing considerably better than you are.

it really depends on the gameplay. The reason why many people think riven is countered by garen is his strong lanesustain, his execute and his Silence.
His sustain allows him to swallow the riven damage and just rest for a Little moment to heal up, and such is even worse if you run grasp of the undying like a good garen should.
Rivens mobility and skills are heavily, and i mean HEAVILY dependant on her skills. screw what i just said, her skills are the entire mobility she has. and a silence pretty much destroys that. including a stun a knock up and a shield. if riven all Outs garen, she Needs to go melee, so he just E shreds her armor first while having his W up to lower her damage, even if she fully uses the maximum of timelimits for her Q ticks she loses a lot of damage, and THEN silences her when shes already low, lands one AA and then ults her.
The Problem in all of that is that garen denies her the earlygame snowball she Needs. sure, a riven can devastate a garen, ive seen it myself pretty damn often, but when it Comes to laning phase garen simply has so many Advantages that he might aswell count as a Counter.
I could probably say the same about Garen being able to beat Yasuo w/o breaking a sweat just because of his silence negating Yasuo's Q and E, his sustain countering Yasuo's snowbally nature and that since it's a pure melee match up, Wind Wall won't work well. Then again, a lot of the Garen players I meet are complete dumb-dumbs.
If you think you can just run at Riven, Spin2Win and then mindlessly dump on her, then yes you will be beaten.
Playing smart with Garen and making hit and run attacks willing get you the win.
most people go undying grasp against riven this is stupid. go thunderlords hit your W+e at the same time when she dives you. laugh as you outdamage her. chase her with a AA+Q when her stun wears off. then retreat rinse and repeat.
The goal as a Riven is to bait out the Q. I fear nothing else in his kit other than that silence. Once its gone, I will typically punish the Garen hard. Besides, spamming Garen into every Riven you see is only going to teach the Riven player how to beat him. I mean, at the rate things are going, the Riven is more likely to know the matchup better than the counter-pick-only Garen.
There are tons of not so great matchups for Riven. Use all of them or main one of them, but stop picking just Garen into Riven and only picking Garen when you are playing against a Riven AND expecting the Riven to never learn how to play around him when you don't know how to play around her.
I recently laned against a Riven main in a normal match. The person has a 100% win rate on her in D5, with a KDA 14.3 / 4.3 / 4.2 , and overall a 94% win rate in ranked. Clearly a smurf account.
I rekt him in lane. He added me after the game (most Riven mains that lane against my Garen do) and explained how confused he was that he lost to a Garen. The point being is this, I beat a 100% win rate Riven main as Garen. It is a skill match up that is Riven favored.
I've won against Riven as Garen before though, more than once. That being said, kiting as Garen is the funniest thing.
He doesn't need to control the fight. He can just zone her and starve her from farming.
I think it depends on how the player plays the lane who wins. Riven not winning lane is as good as Riven losing lane, seeing as she is rather reliant on snowballing early in order to succeed in the mid game.
Riven vs Garen is a skill matchup.
If both players play perfectly or at a high level, (assuming 1v1 as well), the Riven player will always win since she gets more range.
If both players are low skill, Garen tends to win.
