Need Azir help!

So, I got Azir. I really like the champion (used to be a viktor main but am taking a break from him while he gets reworked).

I am having so much trouble getting Azir to work right. It seems like his E charge wants you to be in opponents face, but if I use it I have no escape (jg's often use this as a time to jump). He just seems to have almost no follow up. The slow doesn't last long and no one who is dying ever stands next to the soldiers to let you kill them.

Even if I can win lane, I can't kill anyone very easily (Azir can't really chase either, the short range dash isn't enough to catch up to someone).

I tried a variety of item builds like morellos first, and chalice, and currently using rod of ages so I'm a little more tanky. Had 3 games already where I land up going like 2/7.

What am I doing wrong? How have you fellow league players who have Azir used him effectively?

(p.s. I did look at some guides, but it's so early that no one agrees on what to use on him there either).

To fight with Azir: Try to place a soldier behind them/blocking off an escape route, and start auto attacking with the soldier. If they immediately turn around and fight, shifting sands to knock them up and then immediately spawn the rest of your soldiers. If they try to run away, watch what they are doing. If they simply walk away to a blind spot, walk to them, spawning soldiers and auto attacking when necessary, and be sure to save your Shifting Sands. If they flash away, immediately use shifting sands on your first soldier, put down a second soldier where you want, and then start wailing away, using Conquering Sands as necessary.

How are you tanky enough to be in an opponents face? When I try this it lands up in a 1v1 duel where I'm a squishier caster.

Going to try your suggestion in normal team builder and see if I can make it happen.

In all fairness, I wrote that part expecting you to be able to out duel the opponent. The obvious response at that point is not to duel if you aren't able to duel (and knowing this off the top of one's head comes with experience, to be frank).

This is what I do so far:

Set-Up / Early Game

  • Build: standard AP runes, attack speed/AP masteries.

  • Core Items: Nashor's Tooth, Athene's Unholy Grail

  • Boots: Sorcerer's Shoes if MR is a problem, Boots of Swiftness if the enemy is slippery, otherwise Berserker's Greaves.

  • Starting Item(s): Crystalline Flask and 2/3 health pots (1 mana pot optional).

  • Focus on farming. Try to zone your enemy away from minions if possible my good positioning of your soldiers. Don't worry about getting kills this early unless your enemy is really dumb or your jungle comes in.

  • Your soldiers do great damage. Level R>W>Q>E on Azir. The levels in your W help you spam soldiers and help them do more damage. Remember that your Q isn't for damage it is for slowing enemies and repositioning your soldiers.

Mid/Late Game

  • Once you have your core items you can start making some sweet plays. There is a lot of potential with Azir's kit and people still aren't used to it.

  • Use W+Q+E to throw a soldier at an enemy and then leap to that soldier. This is your gap closer and it is very good.

  • 1 vs 1 you shouldn't have many problems. Keep placing soldiers and try to line up your E to get your shield. Save your Q for when your enemy gets out of range of your soldiers or starts running away (for the slow).

  • If you find yourself fighting multiple enemies by yourself or you are just ounumbered try to use W+Q to pierce as many enemies as possible for the slow. Use your W+E to reposition yourself through the jungle or just to retreat farther.

  • Your R is situational. You can use it to save your butt if you want but honestly it works best in a team fight. Use your W+Q+E combo to position yourself behind the enemy and then R the enemy team towards your own team. Immediately retreat the opposing direction in case they try to go around your wall and get you. Let your team pick them off in this case. Otherwise if they fight your team get some soldiers in there and snag some kills.

  • Take out objectives. The damage from your W is awesome on towers. Stick with your team and erect towers strategically. Don't spam your passive every time it presents itself.

  • Items I take othe than core are Rod of Ages (3rd item not including boots), Rabadon's Deathcap, Rylai's Scepter (your slow becomes obscene), Void Staff (If enemies have high MR), and Liandry's (If they have some MR and you feel squishy).

TL:DR

That is all I've got so far. Honestly I've had a few bad games with him and a few good ones. He is new and people aren't used to him yet. This includes enemies and the people playing him. If my advice works out let me know, it works good for me. Late game Azir is a monster.

Ok so after some team builder here's what works and what I still have questions about.

  1. I have no idea what to do for runes. It's really hard to tell how much attack speed is giving to my soldiers. From there mpen vs straight ap is also confusing me (been doing a bunch of calculations but still not sure). I feel like I want to run some cdr blues and a cdr quint for 15% so I can forgo the extra cdr on other items than nashors. Also testing out running hp seals to increase shield strength on the E.

  2. Rod of ages is good, but you really need an immediate speed boost from something right after you get it. Liandrys also very good, but same thing (you want AS to proc the passive all the time). Chalice has been consistently under performing for me so I'm very mixed on it. Morello's seems like a better option. Although morello's hasn't worked that well either (although the soldiers do apply grevious wounds).

  3. For masteries I'm also divided on whether I should be going 21/9/0 for tankiness or 21/0/9 for more mana regen and mobility. Also on the offense page the soldiers seem to be proccing spell weaving, but I'm thinking this is a bug that might be fixed and I haven't actually tested it.

  4. Everyone disagrees apparently on what skill to level first. A lot of guides say Q, then E. I'm with the above poster that maxing W has been helping me a lot because I get multiple soldiers out. So, again I'm not sure. The only thing I can put out there certainly is that maxing E first is not a good idea because it seems to give the least benefit and you can't always hit into an enemy champion with it.

Azir is super fun but very high skill cap. Lots of placement and positioning are critical. I played two games against other Azir where it came down to who had more move speed so we could kite around each others soldiers.

Thank you all for the help. :)
