I Really Need Some General Advice For Laning Against Malzahar (Becoming Frustrated With Him)

Like, I don't see this Champion often enough to comment on him, but whenever I do see him, he's a serious pain in the ass to fight. The champion I'm referring to is Malzahar.

First off, I would like to point out that whenever I play Mid Lane, I play Lux, as she's really the only mid laner I know how to play decently, for that specific role. Unless the enemy team's mid laner picked before me (and they chose Zed, Katarina or Akali), then, and only then, will I pick Ahri or Annie. [basically anything that would be safer than playing Lux.]

So, for the pretty much all the times I've seen Malzahar picked, he's picked after me.

Now, with those details out of the way, I genuinely need some advice on how to deal with him. I can't shove the wave(s) against him due to his "E" auto-shoving mine back to me. Not to mention his "pets" help with this, so pushing back isn't an option. I've tried doing other things like farming jungle while my jungler is ganking other lanes. I've tried taking enemy jungle farm when I see them in other lanes. I've even tried grouping early to try and force other objectives to go down faster. None of these have been successful. Not even close.

The most I can do in lane is pop his shield with my Lucent Singularity, but in doing that, Malz just backs off and waits out my Illumination debuff, leaving me with no real way to "truly" damage him. It gets even worse when he rushes a Banshee's Veil because (for reasons I do not understand) it procs before his passive shield and not at the same time. Meaning I now HAVE to use a spell to break that before I can even consider popping his passive shield. And then, to top all of that off, if I ever DO MANAGE to pop all of those shields, he just ignite+ults me and I'm dead.

I've tried bringing summoner 1 against him, until I learned that you can't cleanse his ult, due to it being a Suppression. So, with all my options dead in the water, I really want to hear from anyone who's gone up against this champion and has either not been utterly beaten down by him in lane, or has actually beaten him into the ground, instead.

TL;DR - I play Lux when I play Mid Lane. Don't know how to fight Malzahar. Seeking help. Also, any advice given can be generalized between champions. Your advice doesn't necessarily have to be for the Lux vs Malzahar match-up, specifically.

Thank you all in advance!

You can consider picking an off-meta champion, i've played Darius and Garen into Malz and did well. I play Garen a lot mid(hes surprisingly, very good mid).

Edit: also champs that i think are pretty good against malz are Swain , Velkoz Xerath

I may try one of these other champions against him, if I ever run into a situation where the Malzahar picks before me. But they generally get picked after me, so it's pretty uncommon for me to have that opportunity, unfortunately. But I thank you for the advice.

Lux is actually really strong against malz with her range

First few levels take e and just keep hitting him with it until he backs or dies, later use your e on his voidlings+minions to kill them instantly and boost your farm a little.

If he tries to zone you out, hit him with a auto(or break his shield some other way) and snare him+e(+ult).

Generally you just want to stay out of his short range and poke him whenever you can so that he can't lane properly.

If that's the case, I may need to try being more aggro with my auto-attacks, then. I spam my "E" rather often against him, but I never really found any safe points to auto-harass him. I may just have to learn to accept a bit of minion damage to put some on him. Thank you for this info.

quicksilver sash removes the supression and grants MR. It doesnt build into anything useful for mages but you can sit on it until you feel ready to sell it but it should help you a lot in fighting malz

I was aware that QS could remove CC, but I wasn't aware that it could be used to remove (as well as, being used during) Suppressions. I'll add this to my Lux Item sets' "Situational" area. It kind of sucks that it doesn't build into anything useful, but if it keeps me alive against him, I'll gladly build it anyway. Thank you for letting me know this.

First off, I haven't played in like 2 weeks because vacation; and second, when I play mid lane, I play pretty much just Azir. However, the way he deals with Malz isn't THAT different in theory. Early on, you NEED to pressure him, if he fights back, that means he's not farming, poke him to pop the shield, and then try not to let him get it back up by harass whenever he tries to cs. The key is your range. I bully him early on, and because Azir scales just as well, once he gets some strong stuffs, if I position right, by the time he even gets in range I will have chunked him down to half hp or so.

You just need to abuse him hard early. Later on, if he's got flash, your range won't save you. Also, I like to take barrier against him. Cleanse is good vs his URL, but helps nothing if he tries to fight you before then, and even once he does get ult, it helps you survive its duration so you can fight back after.

If you make his life he'll early, you can stay ahead of him in items. Malz without items is not at all scary. Also, at least with Azir, my soldiers butcher his voidlings. When he is trying to get in range of me while I kite back, my soldiers often kill the voidlings practically as collateral, because they chase me too. As Lux, you have AoE that can pop them before they can lay eggs(??) and multiply!

BV can be very useful to build, but is often not particularly optimal. Your best course of action is to beat him up early, and fight him cleverly. If he has flash watch out. Don't let him get us passive up if you can help it, keep poking him to keep it down. Take barrier(personal preference vs Malz), heal is solid too, cleanse is fine but only if they have enough other cc to make it worthwhile. Try to pop the voidlings if possible, they do a lot of his damage. Since he has no mobility, if your jungler ganks, you can either kill or get flash pretty easily. Malz is just rly annoying lol.
