Can We Talk About Malzahar?
So, let's preface this by saying I'm not a Malzahar main. Not by a long shot. There are far far FAR better Malz players than I that would be far better to talk about his current form, but I enjoy him nonetheless and want to chip in my 2 cents. It feels great to land his full combo and watch someone's health bar drain in direct opposition to their salt levels.
However, bearing all that in mind, I have one question to ask: Is new Malzahar just kind of doomed to be gutted in his current state? Around the time of his rework, I'm pretty sure that there was a pretty hefty opposition to the rework, mainly on the basis that he was fine in the first place. Yeah, his passive Voidlings weren't anything too special (unless we're talking "special", which they were...), but I thought they were cool and made sense for this "plane-shifting prophet" kind of character.
While I think his current kit is more fun now than it used to be, there are 2 main reasons that I blame for Malz getting knifed over and over:
- His passive. His passive is just way too good, even if it only works for .25 seconds. Hell, in this meta, .25 seconds is about the duration of a teamfight. I think it needs to be taken back to the drawing board. Maybe make his passive "Void Sickness," where enemies take a bit more damage from his abilities if they're tagged by one of his spells. (not a lot, like 5% for the first 6 or so levels) Something like that. But in its current state, this passive is just way too good.
- His E. Now before you jump down my throat, I like his E as it is. While I think it's fairly balanced as it is, rewarding good timing and well-placed combos, I also think the fact that his Q and R reset it is kind of OP for the same reason LeBlanc's W-Q was OP. It's very easy to E-Q a triple-wave of minions, wipe it out in one easy swoop, and get all your mana back from it.
I'm not calling for Malzahar nerfs, far from it. As good as he is, I also feel like he has some pretty hefty weaknesses, like low damage pre-6, no ability to all-in before his ult, and mobile champs tend to be able to tear him a new one as long as they don't get ulted. (QSS is also a thing.)
No, what I do want is to try and draw attention to some his more potentially toxic (cause toxic is a nice buzzword) elements. Whether his rework should be reverted or not is kind of up to Riot, but I don't think that's the solution.
, I feel like a big hole in his old kit was that his pool (W) felt kind of underwhelming, unlike say,
's W (who has a reasonably low CD snare) it just felt bad unless you had your ult up, because they can just walk out of it.
