Ok, let's try putting it this way
You're part of a Yaht Racing Club. The Yahts are free to use, but you have to pay to get access to add-ons like better sails, a more aerodynamic boat, and the ability to turn. Over the years, you've bought access to all the best upgrades, and subk a comfortable $10,000 to be able to compete on the same level as other people. You, and many others, have pinted out that this is a bit of a weird system for a "Free" club.
The club also can't really change the upgrades because people have already paid for access to them, so it wouldn't be fair to try to balance them out and expect people to oay for them again.
After a long time thinking about it, the owners of the club spend a lot of time and effort into improving the balance and usability of the upgrades (throwing in ones like "steering" for free and making them more intersting like "10s of yaht nitro" instead of "you go faster all the time" and make all the upgrades freely available to everyone.
They also give you some cool stickers you can put on your boat to show that you've been participating for a long time.
Do they owe you anything more?
