A case against League of Legends : An extremely biased analysis.

(I didn't know what board to post this in, sorry) Hey,

So I'm writing this after I just carried a game (26 kills) yet still lost because my team had zero situational awareness.

I've been wanting to write this for a long time, to get some community feedback on how I feel about this game. I was always too lazy to do it, but after this game, I felt urged to give you, my case against League of Legends.

I'm going to give a huge wall of text argument, and I'd like feedback on what you agree and disagree with.

**At the start of each topic, I'm going to put several questions that I would be very happy if every person who reads this would answer. Consider it a questionnaire. **

1. Players always seem to say that "they hate league of legends", yet they still love playing it. What about a game makes you hate something, but love playing it? What causes people to hate League of Legends in the first place?

I think this is the trickiest thing about this game, and I think almost everyone I know who plays League feels this way. They complain about how much the game just absolutely sucks, yet will still enjoy playing it. Although I could expand on this topic much further, I think many of the things I would say will be addressed in later topics.

2. The Grind Should a truly competitive game have characters and other benefits behind paywalls (although virtual ones)?

I think this is a minor point, and I apologize for including it, however, I think this is a bit obnoxious.

I was playing a game today, and I saw Ezreal, and for the first time thought, wow, he seems like he would be fun to play. But then I realized that, like all champs, will cost a butt ton of IP to unlock. One thing I particularly like about Dota is that you start with all of the heroes. So if I go, "wow, Sniper, he seems cool." Bam. Next game I can play him. Just like that. By adding this, you're also giving an even larger disparity between high and low level players. Now, not only will high level players have more experience, they will also have better champions, runes, and masteries.

3. The Community Has Riot been doing a good job with the community? What causes some players to rage and become aggressive? If people hate the community so much, why don't they leave?

I know this complaint has been heard everywhere, but that's because it's true. It's just downright true.

Toxicity has overrun this game. So much hate, so much vile. Hell, I bet I'll get a lot of hate for simply making this post. I'd be genuinely surprised if I don't get a few nasty comments from some Riot fanboys.

I get told to get cancer and die on a regular basis, even when I'm preforming well. Some people just say, screw it, we're gonna lose, I'm just gonna troll. Some people purposefully afk at the start of a game. It's terrible. More games than not, there is a toxic person. And now, you have to spend twenty minutes sitting through their crap. You can mute them, sure, but they are probably doing poorly, so you will still lose anyways, ruining the fun of the game. But, returning to point one, this will make you hate League of Legends, yet still love playing it. Why?

4. Balance On a scale from 1 - 10, how balanced in this game? Why are the champions that, on average, are considered better, high amounts of IP? Are point and click champions really fair?

Balance is hideous. This game is so clearly balanced around the top 1% of players. The fact that you see the same bans every game simply proves that in essence, League becomes a simple math problem, calculating what champ is statistically better. There is very little room for mastering champs that are not the flavor of the month.

Also, all of the strong champs all, coincidentally, seem to be high amounts of IP. Oh let's look at some 6300 champs. Jink : Top tier ADC Darius : Top tier Top Thresh : Top tier Support Yasuo : Top tier mid

The only exception I can think to this rule is Garen. It's pathetic and almost blatantly pay to win.

5. Elo Hell What makes players feel Elo Hell exists? Since Elo Hell has been proven false, why does the phenomenon still exist?

Elo Hell, for those of you who don't know, is a theory that a player will never gain ranking in solo que because his/her teammates are always garbage.

There is probably an element of truth to this. However, Elo Hell has repeatedly been proven false.

Yet the phenomenon still exists, where players seem to be having an incredibly tough time climbing out of low rankings. Instead of trying to improve themselves, most players will instantly blame their teammates (see "The Community)

What it creates is an endless loop. A player is doing poorly, he yells at his team, his team plays worse, they yell at him, he plays even more poorly.

So how can one fix this problem? Well, the final topic is going to be a "suggestions section" where I will tell you how I would fix Elo Hell and "the loop"

6. The Surrender Feature Is Surrender a good option?

Surrender is interesting. Many players will swear on the Bible that a surrender option is necessary for a MOBA, yet both Dota and HotS both manage just fine without it. The question I will examine is, why?

The first reason is, I think there is overall less toxicity in both of those other mobas, lessening the need for a surrender button. Second, I think both have a far better potential to come back than League. HotS literally has a mechanic where your team will earn more XP from objectives if you're behind, and Dota, well, doesn't have an explicit mechanic, however, all it really takes is a good teamfight to come back.

I think the fact that "ff at 20" exists as a phrase simply proves my point in itself.

7. My Final Point Is League truly fair on your emotions?

My final point is one that I think most people don't think about yet I find very prominent, and is one of the reasons why I am thinking about quitting League.

League was almost designed to wreck your emotions. I can tell you that me personally, I can only play 3 games at a time before I need to take a break.

The combat is very twitchy, and is extremely unrewarding. Getting a kill feels, well, meh, while dying is simply rage inducing.

Having to work with strangers in general. Is just. Terrible. Some people can handle it, others, cannot.

But let me get to my biggest point of this entire post. My case against League of Legends is that you are never truly in control.

You wanna invade jungle? Nope, your top laner just goes to tower and doesn't respond. Wanna gank? Sike. The laner engaged too early, securing both of your deaths. Wanna push a tower? Think again. Your team recalled. Wanna contest dragon? Too bad, your jungle has other plans. Want your adc to initiate? That's a shame, your carry doesn't want to. Want your support to initiate? That's also a shame, your support doesn't want to. Want to do baron? Nope, your carry is off solo farming at the 35 minute mark. You're carrying a game and want to get some kills? Shame nobody is peeling for you. Behind and want to farm a lane? Nope. Fed lander TPs in and clears wave before you can get there. Want to focus their carry? Nah, your team would much rather focus the Leona. Want to get an early kill on your counter pick? No, scuttle is a higher priority to your jungler. Want to play defensive in lane? Too bad, your lane partner ignores your back pings and gets both of you killed. Want to stop the enemy counterjungler? No, your team ignores your pings and you can't 1v1 a fed Rengar.

You have zero control over the outcome of the game. Well, let me rephrase that.

What I propose is that you have various degrees of control depending on how you're playing. If you're doing well, you have control of 1/5th of your team's performance, because you can't really do better than the worst person on your team. if you're preforming poorly, however, you have significantly more control, because now you're dead and your team cannot contest baron without you. In other words, League is a game of mistakes.

8. My suggestions My suggestions of these issues

"Love hate" relationship : Players need a new mindset about the game, solving the other problems should lessen this one. "The Grind" : Give everyone all champs and runes at level 30. The Community : Be stricter on toxic people. Make special games specifically for repeatedly toxic people, and put them there PERMENANTLY until they appeal . Balance : Jfc I could go on and on but I won't. Basically, stop balancing around the 1%. Elo Hell : Give players points based on indidivudual preformance instead of whether they won or lost. The Surrender Feature : Get the community and game to a state where it is not needed, and then remove it. My Final Point : Well, i think once you fix the above problems, this one will solve itself.

9. Feedback and Conclusion

Feedback is appreciated, Riot fanboys need not post. Please answer my questions because I really would like to get a good idea of what the community thinks. Thanks for reading.

I dunno about everyone else, but I don't hate the game, I hate the people that play it.

That's also a very popular opinion, and more falls into a more specific category. But yeah, most people do.

I think the biggest problem people have with league and at the same time don't have with league is the fact that this game is constantly changing and evolving. People have a hard time adjusting to these changes that are happening all the time and because of that, I think this leads to people complaining about the player base, balance and just over all amount of fun they have in league.

Bottom line is people hate change and because of this and the way league is there will all ways be people unhappy. Most peoples first instinct is to sit and cry about the problem rather than find a solution to the problem.
