I understand that it's nothing too substantial but as someone who has played a lot of Kassadin, I can tell you that his early game is where he's weakest. He needs more help during the early game laning phase because it's honestly horrendous at the moment to try laning as Kassadin against all the recently reworked mages. So why nerf his level 1 Q even more just to slightly compensate him at later ranks?

I mean his pre-level 6 is already pretty garbage. You don't do much burst damage early on, even with his level 1 ult. Plus your damage takes a while to become meaningful due to the fact that you rush Catalyst, which obviously gives you no bonus AP until you complete your Rod of Ages. It's honestly torture trying to lane as Kassadin at the moment.

5 damage adds up, especially if you don't rank your Q again until level 4 or if you're one of those dudes who max E first. But yeah, I get it. Kassadin is still getting shafted either way. RIP.
