Autofill has problably caused more losses than anything else
in this dumb ass game.
in this dumb ass game.
Maybe for players that never try practicing other roles. The argument can be made that it should not be necessary to play other roles when you are already good at a specific role, but the game was not made so you can always play your desired role.
Most autofilled players get Support as their role. It's not a hard role to play, probably one of the easiest roles in my opinion, just practice it and you will still be able to win even if autofilled.
Autofill happens for all roles. "just learn support" is a piss poor excuse for keeping autofill.
I never said that autofill is always going to place you as a Support. "Most autofilled players" is not all players being autofilled.

Which isn't really true as ranks vary over time (as meddler himself pointed out top lane was the least popular role on some servers early this season). Regardless, it is still a piss poor excuse for keeping autofill.
The "just learn support" was only one situation. My main point was that "the game was not made so you can always play your desired role" and that learning other roles will result in a higher chance of winning which is what the post's main argument.

Which is still a piss poor excuse for keeping autofill because there is no reason why there should be an artificial reason to make people play random roles.
Having to play non-main roles would happen with or without autofill. The simple reality is that it is impossible to guarantee everyone their preferred role 100% of the time without much higher queue times. And while you may feel like you personally wouldn't encounter longer queues, it would be problem for someone. There simply isn't an even split of players across all roles at all times in all elos in all metas.
Even if we were to ditch the current system revert back to the days before role select, you still would not get your preferred role in all your games. Instead of the structure that the current system gives champion select, you would instead get to deal with some combination of 'pick order matters', 'mid or feed', and 'you're last pick, so you're support'.
The only way you're going to avoid playing an off-role in any system is by dodging games that you get placed in that role.

There is no reason to revert to before role select, just revert to before autofill. Solo queue simply does not need autofill, it is only there because flex queue needs it to survive and riot doesn't want even more players to move to solo queue.
The idea that queue times would be significant longer is flawed and baseless. The actual improvements in queue times were minimal when riot extended it beyond high masters and was only used as a means to distract from the fact that riot was pushing dynamic queue when the community wanted solo queue.
Edit: here is the actual queue times changes when autofill was extended beyond challenger. Notice how it barely moved for the majority of players and this was off hours on dynamic queue. Solo queue would have even shorter queue times.
Yeah, I really think autofill was a bad choice. There is a "fill" option if you do not know what role you want to play. Worse though, a lot of people are instantly toxic or refuse to take the game seriously when they are autofilled. And even worse yet, those same people will be given more reason to not care when rank is based on position. :D
