Gnar and his counterplay

Soda Popkillski··39 votes·3,857 views

Try to farm safely? Get poked down Hide under tower? Get bursted down while stunned All in? Get kited (like seriously Kalista and vayne doesn't have shit on gnar if the gnar knows what he's doing) Run away? Get slowed from ridiculously high range to then be put in an infinite cycle of constantly being chased. Dodge the Q? Nope, 3 second cooldown. Stay away from his initiate? Nope, 2 leaps and the high range slow to make sure you don't get too far away. Build more defense? Nope, % damage.

I'm not complaining about his balance, but it really doesn't seem to be ANY counterplay to him. The only thing that I can think of that can counter Gnar is Renekton and possibly a good Riven. This is coming from someone who commonly plays Gnar.

PS: A fair buff to compensate with any nerf (a nerf that of course is to add counterplay) would be to improve his shitty auto attack animation, I realize that he's a high skill champion but this is just FRUSTRATING to deal with.

Allow me to help

Trundle - Mini Gnar doesn't have the damage to get through Trundle's sustain, and Trundle can actually go toe-to-toe with Mega Gnar. Pantheon - Mini Gnar is squishy as hell. He has no way of preventing constant spear damage. Pantheon should abuse his early game strength as much as possible. Irelia - Gap closer? Check. Sustain? Check. Hard CC? Mini Gnar is pretty damn screwed. True damage? Goodbye Mega Gnar. Jayce - Poke the hell out of him. If he goes Mega, just knock him back and continue.

I don't really agree about Irelia and Trundle. Irelias true damage is nothing against Gnars ridiculously high healthpool, and her combo is too short to deal with such a great kiter as gnar. While with trundle, well, while Trundle is very strong against poke and can easily duel Gnar, he is very easily kited.

Jayce and Panth I highly agree with though.

Pantheon is usually thrown around in counter pick arguments ignoring the fact that his extreme lane bullying is all he's good for. He falls off harder mid and late game than Darius does.

You know how Gnar beats Pantheon? Play safe, don't give away first blood then destroy him in team fights. Same argument for every Pantheon matchup.

I fully agree with this, while Pantheon can easely outdamage him early, just like he can outbully alot of champs early, his lategame and the destruction of black cleaver build path has pidgeonholed him into getting phage early which is very bad as it doesn't give armor pen or particularly much damage which is what Panth needs the most to effectively get the most out of his skill rotation, meanwhile brutalizer doesn't build into anything slot effective for him anymore. Thus his powerspike is lower early and falls off sooner. I have had many games where I've gone like 10-2-10 ish to end the game at maybe 15-7-13 ish and a loss just because playing Pantheon is more or less playing against the clock, everything will eventually outscale you so if you can't close the game really soon you just become an anchor for your team.

I'm not sure I agree with Trundle....while I'm definitely no pro, it's been my experience that every time Gnar picks into me, Gnar has the advantage. It's really hard for trundle to out-sustain gnar's poke, primarily because his boomerang and autos force you away from minions (which can screw up your sustain). Also, it's hard as hell for Trundle to actually all in and punish Gnar--his frozen domain doesn't help him catch gnar that well (in my experience anyway) and the pillar is easy enough for Gnar to hop away from. The only thing I was able to do in lane against him was play passively and hug my tower, and I still lost. XD

If there are any tips about dealing with gnar as trundle though, I'll gladly listen. But unfortunately, even Trundle's bite isn't that effective against gnar--even if you gut his base attack damage, it's his hyper that winds up killing you.

  1. Learn to dodge. Mini Gnar has the smallest attack range of all ranged champions, and if Mega Gnar throws his boulder he's essentially wasting 16 seconds of poke. Don't forget that the boomerang has two routes: one going out, one coming back. If possible, hide behind minions, since it deals 50% damage to all targets after his first one.
  2. Farm AWAY from the walls; between tower and the river wall is best, since it also gives room to dodge his boomerang.
  3. Go all in on Mini Gnar at the early levels, since he can't kite much (low attack speed : less procs on W, plus he doesn't have ult yet which increases his movement speed on W proc; also, his Q slows less.
  4. Learn to dodge.
  5. I don't watch LCS, but once you dodge one skill shot, do you stand still to get hit by every other skillshot that's coming? League of Legends is a skill and reflex based games; playing against a Gnar means that you have to play his minigame of dodge the boomerang. If Mini Gnar is poking you from a distance, chances are high that he is missing out on farm. If he isn't, go right in on him the second he throws his boomerang, because that will probably frighten him and cause him to miss his boomerang. Boom, you got his boomerang at a 20 sec cooldown.
  6. There are insanely large amount of ways to play around this. One is that the second you see him jump, RUN TOWARDS HIS PREVIOUS POSITION. Then circle around to the jungle and back. That's because once he jumps, he cannot control the second jump. Dodging his boulders are extremely easy, as he has a casting time and shows you the direction he's throwing the boulder. After that, it become incredibly easy to kite Mega Gnar, and you can go in on him after he misses his boulder, as long as you dodge his W (which has a huge delay/telegraph) and stay away from walls.
  7. You build your normal build; don't rush Warmogs/Frozen Mallet because of % damage, go Randuins first for attack speed slow and then Banshees or Spirit Visage to counter the % health damage. Everything has a counter if you actually think it through.

Look's like you haven't played Gnar a lot. Gnar has a literal <insert profanity> load of counterplay, which is why he's often not picked. Mini Gnar is easily killed by going all in and dodging, while Mega Gnar is easily kited. Since you say that you are a Gnar main, I'll tell you this as a previous Gnar Main: your opponents either have low skill, or you're just good with him. Gnar is extremely skill-based, and I'm glad you know that. Other than that, here are some people that counter Gnar in (I'll say Platinum+) competitive play in the top lane. Majority of Burst Oriented Champions; bursting him down in Mini Gnar Akali Chogath Fizz Gragas Jayce LeeSin Zed Majority of Kite Oriented Champions; kiting him in Mega Gnar Cassiopeia Lissandra Yasuo Quinn Champions who can out duel/out poke Gnar Darius DrMundo Irelia (Irelia so OP, I can't even start to say anything.) Teemo Vi Yorick Also, Renekton Riven are one of the easiest people to go against as Gnar; Renek has long cooldown that can easily be abused, Riven can be kited all day every day as long as you predict her dash.

Soda Popkillski1 votes

I'm saying Riven and Renekton due to their high burst and highly dash-reliant kit, as slows do nothing against dashes, while bursting him down will completely remove the possibility of any poke.

I'm sorry, but as a Gnar and Riven player Riven craps on Gnar hard. He slow doesn't mean much as you can just dash like crazy. Mini Gnar has the lowest base armor stat in the game, while Riven has a rather high one. Simply all-in him level 3 and you pretty much win lane. When he hits mega, use E to avoid his stuns or shield the bolder damage. Staying away from walls prevents the use of his ult, negating a lot of his damage.

Wicked Waffle1 votes

I completely forgot about early game... I usually play safe with Gnar until six, but after six, even with all the dashes Riven has, I can easily kite her. The slow helps, but is less effective due to Riven's dashes; as such, I rely on the movement speed passive from proccing the W, which is enhanced when you reach 6. I admit that Riven will always beat Gnar in the early levels, but post-6 it's mostly skill-based, as once Gnar finishes his BOTRK, he can both poke Riven and disengage if Riven tries to go all in on him (if Riven manages to get close, a jump will easily increase the distance between them, especially if there is a minion). Then you just throw boomerangs back at Riven. Also, as a Gnar I always hard engage on Riven when my rage bar is ~80% filled; it lets me kite her for a little bit in Mini-Gnar, then turn Mega-Gnar as she comes within melee range; this is a lot better than going in on 50% rage bar, which I seen many Gnars do against Riven, causing them to get bursted down before they can transform. Tl;dr Riven will most likely beat Gnar pre-6, but they have an equal chance post-6, if not an advantage for Gnar.

First I want to say sorry for posting on my brother's account by accident and not seeing your reply until just now.

Now, the big problem with post 6 being a skill-matchup doesn't take into effect Riven's snowball potential. I have had several games against a Gnar where I managed to get 1 or 2 kills on him pre-6 and he doesn't build any armor and keeps trying for BORK. This allows me to pretty much insta-gib him with only item 3077 and item 3134. Another thing is unlike Tristana, Gnar's jump can be interrupted by hard CC, so timing Riven's W or third Q negates Gnar's disengage and leaves him rather open, especially if you can follow up with ultimate.

As for the 80% rage bar, that is the best way to play against Riven. Even ahead 3-4 kills, Mega Gnar can still easily out-duel Riven with only a couple items due to his rather beefy stats. As Riven, if I see a Gnar trying to engage on me as Mega I save my dash to dodge his W stun or stay far enough away from the walls to negate his ult. After dodging his W, I chain the W and third Q CC to get damage in without taking any before I back off. If Gnar uses his E as mega, I wait for his rage to go down before I hard engage, sometimes using Flash to get a garented stun I can chain into third Q and Wind Slash for a kill.

Finally, instead of finishing a Last Whisper after Hydra like I normally do, against Gnar I finish my Ghostblade early so the active can chase him down when he get's Hyper proced.

The problem is that he shits all over you the moment he lands one boomerang. Sometimes you get hit, it's that simple. Usually the way it happens is he gets up close so it's really hard to dodge and then boomerangs you and easily kites you if you're melee. Also minion blocking, it seriously gets me hit by so much crap as melee. I think the answer is to just give up more farm in situations like that, which feels awful.

Wicked Waffle1 votes

In early game, like at levels 2-3, if Gnar lands a boomerang on you and proceeds to attack you to proc the W, he'll take more damage from minions than the amount of damage he does to you. Also, if the Gnar is getting close at early levels, that signifies that he's pretty bad, since Mini Gnar has the lowest base stats in the game. Also, Mini Gnar cannot kite well early game, due to his low attack speed and the 30%, compared to the normal 45%, movespeed he gets from proccing his W. In the mid game, all of your points are correct. In that case, if you get hit by a boomerang you would either have to A) Go all in if he's at less than 70% rage bar. B) Run the f*ck away is he's greater than 70% rage bar. Roam, and help gank mid or something. A lost tower in top lane is worth a lost tower in midlane. My idea, in order to nerf Gnar's early game, is to change Gnar's boomerang into a "extension" of his basic attack; meaning that if a champion is hit by the boomerang, Gnar will attract minion agro; however, it will not proc on hit effects.

"In early game, like at levels 2-3, if Gnar lands a boomerang on you and proceeds to attack you to proc the W, he'll take more damage from minions than the amount of damage he does to you."

If there's a whole wave including cannon and he hits you while close enough to piss them all off maybe... But realistically? Not even close. He can easily abuse bushes to drop minion aggro as well because he's ranged. Also at lower elo's gnars tend to have more damage oriented builds, which is hard to abuse when you're a lvl 2-3 melee champion that he can just kite. You simply can't all in him because you take damage before you get there and you end up being the only one with minion aggro. This may be mostly a problem for juggernaut champions though, not most of the more popular top laners.

"Also, if the Gnar is getting close at early levels, that signifies that he's pretty bad, since Mini Gnar has the lowest base stats in the game."

Except that if you're melee he can just kite you so of course he's going to poke you a ton. If you try to go all in he boomerangs and/or hops. He has so much safety so there's no danger in getting close to you. You can't even all in him because you take some damage on the way, his W procs hurt, and you'll be the one taking minion aggro, as he kites back.

"Also, Mini Gnar cannot kite well early game, due to his low attack speed and the 30%, compared to the normal 45%, movespeed he gets from proccing his W."

It doesn't matter if it's as good as he does it later, it's good enough to make several champions effectively useless against him. It does work.

There are a lot of things I feel should pull minion aggro that don't. His boomerang is definitely on that list.

"You simply can't all in him because you take damage before you get there and you end up being the only one with minion aggro. This may be mostly a problem for juggernaut champions though, not most of the more popular top laners."

This is very true for some champions in the top lane. However, with the influx of new champions and the new meta, the majority of top laners have either a dash, high mobility, or just excel in all-ins. So, this is, in fact, mainly problematic for juggernauts; however, juggernauts are DESIGNED to be kitable; they're highly tanky and do lots of damage, but have low mobility, making them naturally lose against kite-oriented champions like Mini-Gnar. On the other hand, the majority of Gnars reach 100% rage bar at around levels 2-3, becoming possible for you to trade without taking prior damage in the time it takes you to close the distance. Mini Gnar also has the lowest base stats in game; that means that he will take more damage than other champions in top lane from minions and other champions.

"Except that if you're melee he can just kite you so of course he's going to poke you a ton. If you try to go all in he boomerangs and/or hops. What I've seen in the games which I play Gnar against other people is that they tend to farm rather than trade, mainly by dodging the boomerangs and hiding behind minions, since they effectively reduce the range of my boomerang. Other times, people allow for me to push to their tower (which is incredibly easy due to the AOE damage from the boomerang), in which they receive a gank.

"It doesn't matter if it's as good as he does it later, it's good enough to make several champions effectively useless against him. It does work."

I won't deny that some champions will be rendered useless in laning phase, especially those with low mobility. However, most champions with low mobility usually have huge dueling potential, and can abuse Gnar's transformation to outduel him when he becomes Mega Gnar.

Cosnirak1 votes

"Mini Gnar also has the lowest base stats in game; that means that he will take more damage than other champions in top lane from minions and other champions."

He doesn't have the lowest range. He doesn't have the lowest movement speed thanks to his passive. And most importantly of all, champions are not just their base stats. They have abilities, and they matter. You can't just claim his base stats = he loses a fight.

"What I've seen in the games which I play Gnar against other people is that they tend to farm rather than trade, mainly by dodging the boomerangs and hiding behind minions, since they effectively reduce the range of my boomerang."

The problem is he's ranged and so can hit you even when you're behind minions. If you refuse to give up cs due to his poke you will eventually die to it. And no, your minions will not fix this issue on their own or even enough that with your help it's just not a problem. It's very easy for him to duck into a bush to drop minion aggro and minion aggro range kind of blows and the melees don't chase you far before dropping aggro.

"Other times, people allow for me to push to their tower (which is incredibly easy due to the AOE damage from the boomerang), in which they receive a gank."

This works really well at higher elos. At lower ones it's a dice roll at best. The junglers aren't that aware, don't understand things that well, and run into all kinds of issues of their own. I get that Riot balances the game largely around diamond level of play but that doesn't mean they should just rely on ganks happening to justify a champion's balance that much. But hey, counter picking is supposed to be a thing too right? Just wish Gnar had more actual counters himself. He's pretty easy to safely farm with little to no penalty for it.

"I won't deny that some champions will be rendered useless in laning phase, especially those with low mobility. However, most champions with low mobility usually have huge dueling potential, and can abuse Gnar's transformation to outduel him when he becomes Mega Gnar."

This is why I think Riot messed up by making certain juggernauts so weak early in the laning phase. Some champions just completely shit on them in every way and all they can do is lose tons of cs and be sad.

Gnar represents the cooldown gate done right. Riven/Kat/Garen could take a few lessons.

Critmaster Garen8 votes

he should lose the as boost on his auto attacks in mini form. he should also not be able to use his ability to single hop and ONLY allow him to double hop. which adds the requirement of having to use a minion to even use the ability.

the main concern i see with his hop is, that he can sit on the cooldown until he gets caught out. is already kiting extremely well with the slow and movement speed buff, which makes his windows of vulnerability extremely small.

but in case he ever does make a mistake and gets caught in mini form, he just hops away. its really fucking stupid.

and dont bother trying to fight him in melee form. hes just gonna stunlock and kill you.

Of those champs I'd say Gnar is probably the most fair to play against, mostly cause all his hard CC is in a form that is not accessible 100% of the time and is fairly telegraphed. With you on everything else though.

Left Hook Larry5 votes

Yes, out of these 4 Gnar is the fairest the play against

But that isn't saying much

My biggest problem with Gnar is that he's too safe in lane. He can poke you down and jump away with ease, then he can tranform into a tanky monster and CC you to death. He has everything in his kit

AutoreactiveCD41 votes

You're right that it isn't saying a lot, but at least he's a step in the right direction. He can poke you down and kite you but all inning with his CC combo is at least massively telegraphed. If they made his mini form less safe somehow he'd be much more vulnerable to a lot of all ins. That would be ideal I think.

Laning against Gnar is fucking hell. Right now there are so many spammable top lane champions that are just overused as of right now. Gnar is one of them. Any champion that doesn't have mana you can guarantee they're going to spam the shit out of their moves. I've been abused so many times when i'm up against Gnar players because of that 3 hit passive thing. His range is just too enormous and his basic attacks do enough damage on its own, but to give him a boost just to keep him on your dick is beyond annoying. His Q can hit you from 3 miles away and that hop he has is annoying as fuck too. He has a crazy strong start too. In my experience, laning against a gnar is just an annoying experience. The only counterplay i could see for him is frozen heart just to decrease the likelihood of him procing his passive or whatever. But by that time he will have a trinity force so there won't be a difference.

Funny story: I was in champion select and first pick wanted top so i was like, ok, that's fine guess i'll be jungling then. The guy who wanted top sees the enemy team lock in Gnar and immediately says "ok nvm, you can go top now" lol.

SlaktarTasken2 votes

Imo the problem with Gnar is the rate at which he can transform into megagnar and the free sustain it gives him, alot of Gnar mains used to build botrk on him, you never see that nowaday as they have gotten wiser and simply rush blackcleaver/randuins due to being able to rely on his innate sustain, on closer the observation he can almost transform of each wave as soon as he hits level 3, this pretty ridiculous considering the hefty heal it comes with.

You're supposed to punish him while he is in minignar form but it's a complicated strategy because he's quite safe and mobile, I say nerf his rage gathering capacity by like 25-30% or nerf the heal by a similar ammount and we should be golden. Gnar will have to think more about when or where he transforms instead of just spamming it for the win.

In a DPS fight, Mini-Gnar can't win. If you can gapclose onto him, he is very squishy and will die fast. In order to proc his W passive, he needs to auto you a couple of times along with his boomerang, and his auto range is short. Abuse this and jump him if he tried to auto you.
