With the new Greater Stealth Totem changes does that mean NO MORE SIGHT STONE FOR SUPPORT!!!

Now that you can store 2 wards in the Greater Stealth Totem trinket why do you need to buy sight stone anymore? Yes you are missing one ward but think about it your teammate can now place an extra 5 wards.

No because red trinket is now more valuable than ever (twice as many wards to kill) so you need to build sightstone and then get a red trinket.

Well lets see tomorrow. I am going to start not buying sight stone and see how my games goes.

No, thats just means the four other players have no excuse not to help with vision. With this update if you aren't helping with vision you're just a bad player.

  • Sightstone is currently rushed and built on the first recall (between 4:00 and 8:00).

  • Supports hit level 9 at some point between 15:00 and 20:00.

  • More wards on the map means getting an Oracle's Lens is even more crucial.

You forget that you have to choose between a sweeper and a greater stealth upgrade. You can't have both a red and a yellow trinket. If everyone runs sweepers, there aren't going to be any wards other than what only the support is laying out, which was the problem Riot was trying to fix.

I'm merely expressing my doubts for GST as a Sightstone replacement.

I can see GST + Sightstone being a thing. And hopefully making Riot add a recharge passive to Ruby Sightstone.

SquirrellyOtter1 votes

Wrong again, because you can only have 3 stealth wards per player on the field. Doesn't matter if they have different origins (GST or Sightstone). Your support doesn't have any benefit holding onto a yellow trinket of any kind once they buy Sightstone.

Normally you'd only be able to get a 4/5 wards down per trip. That's not even enough for 2 full cycles.

If you use 2 GST Wards + 1 Sightstone Ward, you can have a full cycle of wards down and still have 3/4 wards on hand, allowing you to quickly replace or move your wards. Best case scenario, you get up to 4/5 cycles of wards per trip.

Probably not worth it, but doesn't hurt to toy around with it.

Moving a group of wards in a hurry could be useful, but that wasn't really the point. The point is, you still can only have 3 down at any one point in time. So everyone freaking out about the GST buff and reinforcing the 3 to 5 sweepers per team is pointless, especially if all 10 players run sweepers which locks out GST. It's just overkill on vision denial and Riot's trying to get vision, especially late game, back on the map. They're doing the right thing.

These people panicking are exactly the reason Riot's doing the changes.

Right now we have 4 Oracle's Lens + 1 Farsight Orb per team. There's too many sweepers lategame, wards get swept within a minute of getting placed down.

The change may make picking up 1-2 GST worthwhile. As far as supports go, Sightstone + Oracle's should still be the way go to. With some potential exploration with Sightstone/GST being possible.

I agree on the support still going sweeper, because denying vision in key areas (Dragon/Baron, common gank points, etc) is still important, and I also agree that these changes should make GST more worthwhile for teammates to buy.

I'm just pointing at the people in this thread who are running around like chickens with their head cut off overreacting to the changes, like the top comment on the thread.

Now that I look at it, I may be overreacting myself; I'm trying to squash multiple panic threads regarding Sightstone and GST, and this one specifically asked about supports, not the whole team. My bad.

I get my sightstone around level 7 or 8 because I have to deal with my mana issue first. So I would have to buy wards in order to get vision in bot. An extra 1 or 2 wards is not a big deal before getting Great stealth totem.

Right now the most common build involves sitting on a tier 1 GP10 item and then rushing Sightstone into Mobos.

GST still isnt really worh it. think about it. no HP bonus, you have to wait for charges, fewer charges, wards last shorter time. You are better off with a red trink or pink totem (usually red trink and just buy pinks) plus your team should be buying pinks anyway

Sailor Mint2 votes

It's great for mid laners. You get a 3 min ward every minute and you can save up a charge to place two at a time.

It's terrible for supports who need to move wards around constantly. Unless you run both GST and Sightstone, and get to ward for days. Still need someone with a Sweeper tho.

yacota1 votes

ok thats a fair point. i dont mid so i wouldnt have thought of that. still tho its something that your probably going to get rid of in favor of a sweeper or pink totem in the later stages of the game where longer lasting vision and control of enemy vision is more important

Wards in greater stealth totem last about 3 minute which is the same as sightstone. Plus I play most Ap utility support so the Hp is useless to me. Its only 60 seconds to recharge a ward which is not that long.

SquirrellyOtter2 votes

It wasn't designed to replace Sightstone; it was actually meant to help supports who are often the only providers of vision into the mid and late games when everyone except the ADC ran sweepers in the mid and late game and the ADC ran blue trinket late game.

When four players run sweepers and only one player actually lays down only three-to-five wards per back, vision's gonna drop for both sides.

This is a problem.

Riot's looking to make denying vision less appealing and make providing vision more rewarding. Clarity.

ITT: No one can do math.

Before patch 5.3: +6 to 8 out of 10 players buy sweepers. 2 to 4 players (the ADCs and maybe some junglers) buy blue trinket to check bushes or chase. 2 players (the supports) buy Sightstone. +Wards on the field at any point: 6, three for each team. Support can only place 3-5 wards per back depending on the upgrade to Ruby: dropping wards four and five replace the first and second dropped wards because each player is permitted only 3 stealth wards on the field at any point. +Sweepers on the field: 6-8.

After patch 5.3: +10/10 players buy sweepers out of fear that the new yellow upgrade means twice as many wards. +Sweepers on the field: 10.

Look at what changed in terms of vision?

Nothing. We're all still facechecking bushes and jungles because denying the enemy vision is somehow more important than giving your teammates vision and helping out your support, whose running ragged trying to put down wards and save your hides in teamfights.

Good job guys.

Aside from the previous statements about Sight stone being rushed and lenses being more important.

If your a support. You really shouldn't worry about slot effeminacy lost from buying a sight stone. (considering that you should be the least likely member on your team to reach a full build.)

And on top of that, Sightstone is probably more versatile still. You would more likely be able to replace a ward using a sight stone rather than the Greater vision totem.

Lwnt1 votes

Just because we dont get full build doesnt change the fact its still slot effeminacy lost. In my opinion I hate buying sight stone I feel its a waste of space and that the trinket spot should replace it.

straight4free1 votes

At least in pro games, 3-4 members of the team grab sweepers so I don't see much of a chance of Sightstones being replaced by GSTs.

In low level play, maybe, though.

Secret laning Lee Sin/Katarina/Jax buffs. Two escapes? Psshaw.

I still think the vast majority of supports will (and should) go sightstone and sweeper.

But MAN, the upgraded yellow trinket is pretty awesome for a mid or top, or even a jungler looking to counter-jungle. It really feels like you have a ward available whenever you want one. Also, you don't have to go back to base to refresh your supply. It's really handy for extended forays into enemy territory or securing vision around objectives when there might not be time to go back to base to buy individual wards.

  1. You can't rely on Stealth Totem in the early game. To keep up with early vision, you'll probably have to spend half a sightstone's worth of gold keeping up vision before you hit level 9.
  2. Two charges means you can't put up the 3rd ward for a minute after the first 2. This makes it hard to rotate wards, especially if you're quickly setting up vision at an objective.
  3. A single sweeper ruins your vision, while Sightstone can immediately put down the 4th ward if one of your wards gets quickly swept.

Honestly, if I didn't want sweeper, I would grab the Greater Vision Totem for the free pink, though I don't like how long the cooldown is on that.
