Nami makes a GP&B post!: Critical Strike Chance - The Sundering

Ok, a lot of people hate how crit chance is inherently random while also very strong; it's rarely average, and more often either lucky and OP or unlucky and wasted stats. Even the guys in charge of this stuff agree it has problems.

I don't really know what crit replacement concepts have been suggested because I don't bother reading them, so if I act like this is my idea but you've heard it before, don't get upset. Two people can have the same idea.

  • Critical Chance becomes a new stat I will call Precision.

  • The more Precision you have, guess what? the easier it is to hit a weak point with a Focused Strike for bonus damage.

  • As you observe an opponent in battle (you're in combat with them) you gain stacks of Focus. The more Precision you have, the quicker you gain Focus (or the less you need, same thing).

  • Each enemy is focused separately. If you have Precision, enemies you are observing to build Focus will have a Focus bar under their health/resource. Edit for clarity: You only see and use your own focus. Nobody can see or use focus someone else built up

  • When the Focus bar maxes out the next attack will hit a weak point for bonus damage and reset Focus on them. Staying out of combat will drain Focus slowly at first, then gradually quickening.

  • Let's have Precise Strikes ignore a certain amount of resistance. You wouldn't spend your time observing Leona for weak points then shoot her shield, would you?

  • Since front line tanks will be in combat with you more, that means you can get more of this bonus damage on them. It essentially makes it harder to go one shot squishies with a crit.

TL;DR;

  • Crit becomes Precision
  • Enemies have a new bar that fills as you're in combat with them
  • Once full, your next attack deals bonus damage

that'd be awk. because what if there is a trynd and a jinx on your team, do they both use the same focus bar? what if the sup auto happens to consume the focus stack?

They don't share or see other's bars.

then imagine jinx and trynd attacking alistar. how does alistar know when he'll get crit striked by whom? what about sona auto attacking alistar and wanting jinx to give the finishing blow, but she doesn't know when the extra damage will occur, or the draven who wants to let trynd and jinx focus alistar as long as possible before using heal to outplay them? this system would give information to the attacker, but not be able to give any change to anyone else. the imbalance of information would likely be worse.

how does alistar know when he'll get crit striked by whom?

He doesn't, and that isn't the intention. He can estimate it on his own, but otherwise he doesn't know exactly. At the very least he will know that he won't immediately be crit when they come in and the ones with more Precision will get it faster. This is as opposed to Critical strikes, where any attack could proc at any time, or none of them can (there is no estimating it whatsoever).

Weak in short fights, very strong in long fights, which I guess is sort of the idea of an ADC. Could add a lot of skill to the game. Whoever has more Precision wants to disengage from a trade at exactly the right moment, when they get their bonus damage and before their opponent does.

Precision doesn't scale with number of attacks though; it's sort of like a Thresh or Ziggs passive. Meaning that it doesn't scale with attack speed. You'll get ADC's like Draven, who don't care too much for attack speed past a certain point (since you can't have axes fall that fast) who go for Precision and AD, versus ADC's who will just build mostly attack speed and AD and skip out on Precision. AD would get much more valuable, and unless you tune Precision really high(so it blocks out AS builds), ADC damage overall will go down.

Overall, don't like it cause it doesn't multiply with attack speed. You could find some way to shoehorn in an AS scaling, but it just doesn't fit the ADC triangle of multipliers (AD x AS x crit) that we have now, and so it doesn't reward splitting between the three.
