Question about Lucian's Q

So. I was playing a few games last night, and it seems that if you Q, but die before it blasts, it still shows the effect, but doesn't do the damage. I remember two different moments when this was the case. There was a involved in the game, so it could have been his shield, but I dunno. I was just wondering if this is right, or if it's a bug.
