New emotes are going to be a disaster waiting to happen.

I understand where Riot is coming from with the emotes. I'm sure they seem like a fun little feature to add some laughs and joy to the game, and they are harmless right?

Wrong.

One of the most toxic , rude, and downright mean communities I've ever seen in a video game.. and you honestly think this will have a positive effect on the game? I really have tried to look at this from every angle, and every point of view.. but all I see with these new emotes are more bad manner and more tilted players becoming toxic. I don't know if Riot is just trying to make more money (if these are purchased with RP) or if they just don't ever play ranked, but people already intentionally feed or troll or rage way too much already and this is just adding gasoline to the fire. The mastery emotes are bad enough, but now you're adding a jinx making fun of you and 2 characters crying (which will more often than not be spammed to indicate the enemy player crying, not the player using it)

Maybe this could be a fun thing for professional players in LCS, people who are so skilled at the game that it wouldn't tilt them in the slightest, and it could definitely get some laughs from the audience.. however playing solo queue in bronze silver or gold, it will not be funny or enjoyable, it will make you hate life and probably rage, tilt, or you might not even want to play another game of league and take a break all together. I may get some backlash telling me to stop being so soft, or it's just a game, or whatever cliché insult y'all want to throw at me.. but picture this for a minute.

You are mid against a zed who is clearly smurfing or just better than you, he is fed, spamming his laugh, and spamming these toxic emotes while he completely zones you from CS and stomps you no matter what you do. Now you probably think that a jinx making fun of you, or a crying amumu being spammed won't effect you any differently than a normal mastery emote, however I'm willing to bet that won't be true.

It's like when people say 'gg ez'.. the game is already over, and you can move on with your life, but for some reason it still annoys you and makes you want to report the person saying it. Why?? People say it all the time and it's just a dumb comment that means nothing.. but I believe that it's a psychological thing. You just lost a game that might have been close or you were trying your best to carry or maybe it was a massacre, but even though you know ggez is just a troll toxic statement.. in that moment, it could make you feel like you're trash and you probably won't win your next game either.

On the surface, me writing this and you thinking about the new emotes while you're chillin on the forums with no worries in your mind, this could be looked at as a stupid thing that won't effect you at all.. but if you are in game, in a promo series or just having a bad day of league this could seriously influence rage, trolling, intentional feeding, or maybe even quitting in the middle of the game and not coming back.

tl;dr -- These emotes will just make more players toxic and unenjoyable to play with, and the amount of good they will bring will be way below the amount of bad. Maybe they can be used In LCS because professional players don't tilt so easily , but it simply cannot be allowed in low elo, people will lose their minds. [slayer-jinx-unamused]

the fact that Riot themselves said "We don’t want these to be too tilting." worries me, they know it is tilt fuel and know it will encourage BMing, but are still going through with it, only reason i can see considering their normal stance against BMing is that the want to try their hand at yet another new micro translation cash cow.

Do not worry. You will NOT be able to see emotes from people who you have muted.

More ways to be passive-aggressive.

I don't really care so much about the risk of it tilting me, I don't tilt very easily. What I'm really worried about is how it will clash with the more dramatic "war-like" feel/theme of the game, just totally obliterates any seriousness.

Good read.

Completely agree with everything you mentioned, and personally I think this is just a money grab from Riot

dreamstalkers8/8/2017, 10:19:07 PM12 votes

Also I would like to add, many people have their own solutions to the issue, and that's great

however you have 4 other teammates who you cannot control !

Seiferoth8/8/2017, 10:32:14 PM10 votes

GIve us the options to turn emojis off without even muting. everything's dandy.

Tattersall8/8/2017, 10:30:09 PM10 votes

I read the title and was going to say, "naw, they won't be that bad," but you made some really good points. +1

TwitchInMyPants8/8/2017, 11:30:41 PM10 votes

"I have tried to look at this from every angle, every point of view...."

If mutable emotes that already exist in mastery spam is just automatically toxic in every conceivable scenario to you because 100% of the playerbase is toxic, you haven't changed your angle at all. Is this addition unnecessary? Yes. Toxic? No, not unless people are spamming them and using them to compliment the chat, which actually expresses toxic ideas. Like Jinx smiling after someone dies is passive aggressive, but there's no insult tied to that. Only the idea that another player giggled over a death. And if a smug Jinx emoji pisses you off that much you can mute it. I already overuse the mute feature because I hate reading toxic chat, but I don't beg riot to DELETE THE CHAT ITS ONLY EVER USED FOR TOXICITY WOE IS ME because the chat is actually a useful feature and I wouldn't want to ruin it for everyone just because some assholes abuse it.

Bot With Dumbass8/8/2017, 10:36:41 PM9 votes

i see one player teamate or enemy bm with the dumb ass emote boom muted idc if you were toxic or not

Skorch8/8/2017, 9:39:34 PM8 votes

I think they are one of those things where assholes will be assholes. But respectable people will be respectable.

Similar to URF we cant let a few annoying people ruin a feature.

Personally i think its also a good way to laugh at yourself when you fuck up, or congratulate a good play.

Without the feature toxic people will be toxic anyways.

I just don't think they're going to avoid the tilt scenario.

LIke you see it in Overwatch, DOTA, etc. with sprays and emotes and stuff. People use them. Cute or not, they tilt you. Like really, look at this emote and tell me it won't be spammed when you'd otherwise write "?"

As long as you can mute them like you can with Taunts, Laughs, etc; I'm fine.

People saying ggez tilt me enough.

LocatedEagle2328/8/2017, 10:09:05 PM5 votes

See, I agree and usually my friend tells me "Yeah, I get tilted sometimes Eagle. That's why I mute all."

Then I watch his game and see he is 0/7.

I pay closer attention to top lane and notice the 5/0/6 Yasuo is spamming his mastery emote while q'ing him under tower.

Edit; How about a mute emote function?? Sure it's sort of stupid, but so are half the people that will probably spam emotes to tilt...

Chromatic Eagle8/8/2017, 10:40:13 PM5 votes

Why is this worse than the taunt, laugh, dance, and mastery emotes we have already?

TwinJacks8/9/2017, 3:05:16 AM4 votes

The new emotes should only be seen by teammates

Tin Obliterates8/9/2017, 4:52:30 PM4 votes

I don't want them to add the emotes in because it just doesn't fit into this game, in my opinion. (Mastery emotes are fine, but this is just stupid)

I also don't want my teammates to waste their time spamming emotes while they could be doing something like... I dunno, actually playing the game.

Wyrmblade8/9/2017, 4:27:19 AM4 votes

If there's no option to mute the emotes by themselves outside of the game I am literally never going to hear anyone on either team speak again. These kill the atmosphere of the game so thoroughly that even watching other people who don't turn these off is going to be annoying.

Vallalan8/8/2017, 11:38:11 PM4 votes

I mean they say they don't want them to be tilting.

but they added in the blitzcrank "?" one.

like come on you KNOW how that one is going to be used.

either way I mute all chat and pings anyway so I won't see these on anyone but myself.

I think they should only incorporate positive emotes and no question mark or angry ones.

sad maybe, but beyond that the rest will be used to tilt the shit out of people.

keep the neutral ones like teemo/the poro.

Hexs Fortune8/9/2017, 2:15:59 AM4 votes

Add an option to ignore emotes and im a-ok

Mecha Incognito8/9/2017, 5:00:23 PM3 votes

Well then just have an option to have them not be visible.

I don't think it's a good mentality to think "someone might be annoying with it, so let's never have it". There's a chance that someone might throw cake at my face, that doesn't mean we should never be allowed cake.

ChemicalBuster8/9/2017, 2:34:39 AM3 votes

this was added to a mobile moba and it's so tilting. Either they kill you and they start using it while dancing, or they do it while your waiting for the right time to attack (its already done here but you can dance and show your emote the same time)

Not sure why people keep calling league the most toxic every competitive game is toxic and league is honestly not the worst have any of you played smite or darksouls? the internets just not a nice place

Manwalrus8/8/2017, 10:11:54 PM2 votes

If we're gonna get permanent emotes at least bring back the esports icons so we can at least have some real ones and not this emoji garbage.

S0NA8/9/2017, 12:53:35 PM2 votes

If this is their "solution" to the shitloads of IP I have left over, I'm gonna tilt off the face of the planet without even seeing them ingame tbh.

KawaiiShroom8/8/2017, 10:02:47 PM2 votes

What about the lux and the poro ones. They are pretty cute and very cute. It would be fine if they had more like those.

LostFr0st8/8/2017, 11:23:51 PM2 votes

I agree with most of your post. I don't think the current emotes they have are right for League.

Something similar but only for my team--- I would have appreciated that. This just makes cross-team bming easier to do since they can now BM while controlling their champ instead of needing to type (during which time you could attack them since they aren't controlling their champ 100%)

If these emotes could only be seen by my teammates they would be amazing. Could have a tower one, a baron one, a buff one, drake, etc. and they'd include a yes/no so we could shotcall to our team.

All of that potential is wasted though if they are cross-team viewable... just makes me a bit sad that they've facilitated cross team but not in-team comms. :(
