Veigar Support, which item to start?

I go targons so I can justify Qing minions and provide some sustain to my carry. What about you?

Doesn't hitting champions also proc the free ap passive? I'd say get the frost queen one or coin and the mana regain thing.

Spellthief's Edge

With his rework you don't need to last hit minions.

Just poke enemy champions and you get stacks.

To run Veigar Support, here's how to do it:

  1. Start with Spellthief's Edge.
  2. Poke with Q and W, but only if you can potentially land 2 hits on the enemy laners, your objective isn't to last hit minions as support Veigar, but to stack your passive off of the enemy laners.
  3. DO NOT pump more than 1 point into E until you've finished the Lost Chapter. E's initial cost is 50, and it goes up a bit dramatically from there; In efforts to save your mana supply, you need to hold off on leveling up E until you have the mana supply to manage it, because you want to cast it constantly.
  4. Your third item to start, after the Spellthief's Edge and Sightstone, is the Lost Chapter. Mana is super important to Veigar, and bonus points if you finish Morellonomicon and there's a Soraka, Nami, or Sona that will be screwed by your Grievous Wounds.

After these, you can pretty much roll straight AP. I typically build the Eye of the Watchers instead of the Frost Queen's Claim, as freeing up the item slot is a lot more efficient on Veigar. He scales pretty hard, even as a support, so you can definitely start wracking up the body count with him and filling out your build.

Ancient coin provides more gold, sustain, and mana regen so you can just stack off enemy laners. You can go with spellthief line as well but it tends to not provide as much gold, and zero personal sustain.

Veigar doesn't want to play passive though, which is what the coin is for. He wants to stack off of enemy champ hits; Plus, the Spellthief line offers mana regen and AP.

You don't have to play passive with coin. It gives you the option to if you get a bad matchup. And more consistent gold income. Spellthief locks you into aggression and if you are outmatched you just get fked. They are both 100% legit. Coin is the safer pick though.

They are legit, yes. However, the Coin doesn't evolve into something that a support Veigar would want later in the game. The Talisman of Ascension is a good item, yes, but Veigar doesn't want to build utility past a certain point - he wants to go full AP ham. This is why the Spellthief -> Eye of the Watcher is the best option for him. It allows him to get his gold (he will play aggressive, he has to ramp up his passive to be relevant late game), and it gives him some, even if marginal amounts of, AP along with the CDR and mana regen, so that every item he builds will be contributing AP.

It's true, but you don't need full ap to kill squishies in my experience. If I'm support veigar, my favorite build has the Coin sightstone item, dcap, lichbane, voidstaff or liandries depending on if people built any mr, boots and a tank item, usually armor but sometimes mr.

To be fair though, it's rare that I make it past coin-boots--dcap-lichbane.

Spell thiefs is hands down better...his mana costs early are really high. Mostly on E. Literally the ONLY reason you play Veigar is for that E.

Yeah, he has super strong anti-allin power since his E knocks down dashes like leona's, poppy's (I see poppy support here and there), nautilus, thresh second Q, etc.

Really? I thought that with the lane sustain Targons would still be good. Guess Ill go Sepplthef next

All in all the sustain becomes pretty negligible. IF you can't cast an E to save your adc, all the sustain in the world won't help you. (Mana Problems are real for Veig support)

you dont.

When I support veigar I build straight into a loss screen

Coin gives the option to get a "Fly, you fools!"-button. That alone kinda makes it worth. Because it allows you and your adc to push up more and generally play riskier. Also, it gives gold outside of 2v2 lanephase. Seiging mid for instance gives free gold, even if the enemy plays too far back to poke. And the turret-runner passive is AWESOME (for running up and down trying to poke)

Spoils of war works only on melee champions .... and Tresh .

The bonus damage only works on melees. The money wrks for everyone. that is the part that works on thresh
