Poor tanks

Honestly, tanks are in a really bad place. (except maokai.) All of them have a poor early game due to their lack of any damage and sustain (except mundo), and even in mid-to lategame, they usually have no escape, simply they get caught. But i think the biggest reason why tanks are so bad currently is two items:

item 3035 Last whisper and item 3135 Void staff. These items are very nice if used against a team who doesnt have something super tanky. Magic penetration is good. But sometimes ignoring 50 or 75 armor/magic resist of the enemy tank is bullshit. 1 point of armor is worth roughly 20 gold. So, by buying last whisper you simply "take away" 1000 or 1500 gold from the enemy. And when your pair it up with something like a Blade of the ruined king or a liandry's torment, that's the point when tanks basically become worthless.

Even with all these "anti-tank" items, it is still a chore to drop one, you see a good tank knows just how diversify his/her build up to the point were the enemy's counter-build options mean, and do less and less. A tank with 3000-4000 hp and 150-200 armor and magic resist is still hard to chew through, and the reason for this is simply in how he/she itemized: item 3143 + item 3110 can not only give you great armor and health, but can also reduce your opponent's attack speed by a combined and hefty 30%. item 3102 + item 3190 + item 3401 can all offer shields to soften the blow from enemy damage. item 3075 + item 3068 + item 3025 can make trading with a tank a nightmare as they smother you with all of this back-damage and spellblade-slow. item 3047 or item 3111 ensure their push beyond CC and kiting, with the item 3083 changes, and the new Elixir of Iron, I'd say that tanks will be just fine as they CC targets in place to be nuked by their own carries. ;3

It's basically like this: armor counters item 3153 and raw damage(Like from this:item 3072.), health counters armor/magic pen, health and armor counter crits, magic resist counters ability power and magic damage(That includes magic proc damage, so it blocksitem 3115 item 3100 item 3160 item 3087 too.) and shields counter true damage.

Good thing as a tank you can get 10 items to have all those options. Oh wait because tanks are generally slow as fuck we need boots. Two armor items is a must with the ADC buffs that just happened. Frozen heart gives no HP so its tough to buy if youre the teams tank. One MR item and MAYBE a damage item and your done. If you don't have the base stats you are not going to be an effective tank. Why? because unlike the tank items and the real choices you have to make to decide betwenn frozen heart or sunfire cape and ADC can build a totally standard and effective build that gives lifesteal, crit, lots of AD, and armor pen with NO choices. So no... its not that easy to build a tank effectively. my point is if a tank wants to slow AS they give up a health item (no health on FH) if they want thornmail.... no health. if they want insane health warmogs no armor or mr..... Tanks have a real problem building ADs on the other hand have perfects builds and the biggest decision is BOTRK or BT.

I don't find it hard at all to itemize against an enemy team comp, it is all about understanding what you need to counter what source of damage, besides if your carries are doing their jobs, it isn't that difficult to engage and peel for them, granted, sometimes it does feel as if building this or that hardly makes a difference, but that is partly due to most damage dealing champs being fed over most tanks. And I did mention boots up there, did you just assume that I thought we could get 10 items in our build? I understand the limit is 6, -1 due to boots, if it seemed like I didn't I apologize for the misunderstanding. Anyway builds like: item 3111 item 3102 item 3065 item 3083 item 3068 item 3143 aren't a bad start to ease the pains AD and AP carries are causing, you should be able to do quite a bit with this build alone, and a few items can be switched out for different items to adapt to different team comps.

I like this build and it is one I use quite frequently as I main tank. I often start the game with Brawler's Gloves and run with an avarice blade until late game where I turn it into Atma's Impaler. This greatly eases itemization costs, especially if I fall behind in lane at any point.

Then, late game I have built all my hp items and change over to Atma's and convert all that beautiful HP into terrifying damage.

Too bad item 3005 is being removed season 5. Rito just can't stand the item. :^)

So I have heard. That won't stop me from buying Avarice Blade. It makes me sad. I saw so few people using Atma's that it made me happy that I could make it work so well for me.

I guess my endgame Garen will have a Statikk Shiv from now on...

well I went up against ALL ad team as a nasus.. i had about 500 armor and over 500 stacks... engages were as easy as walking up to the closet person, slow, bop them on the head

I got Platinum just from endlessly spamming Rammus and Malphite in solo queue since they easily counter fighters/assassins which are the best champs in lower ELOs due to their splitpushing ability, I dont think tanks are in a bad place.

Also insult to injury items like item 3143 ,item 3065 ,item 3102 got nerfed to the point where it slightly makes a difference in team fights(Even though mages and and AD carries pierce through you like a hot knife through butter

Let's be honest: Spirit Visage was REALLY fucking OP before it got nerfed. It was stronger than FoN ever was, it was ridiculously gold efficient.

you missed the point tanks suck because their kits dont have anyy tools that tank would use, just some plain cc

the only tanks who are somewhat doing their job and posses working kits are braum and maokai the rest gets ignored becuase tank deals no dmg

Lumus Avatar2 votes

Tanks aren't supposed to deal DAMAGE. They are supposed to draw enemy fire letting the real damage dealer do their job.

Knight SoIaire 1 votes

thats my point tanks cant deal dmg but the only way that our old tanks (the ones besides maokai and braum) can draw the enemy fire is through damage (taunts unfortunately work as stunns), meaning that they just cant do their job or become toxic cases of indestructability that gets damage for free

a guy like braum can use his e mao can use his ult to negate the dmg

but what can nautilus or sejuani do? they will just blow their cc and chase the adc, they are able to kill that adc thats why they draw fire ... or they will just peel and get ignored either way thats not how they are supposed to work

Lumus Avatar1 votes

I feel a smart team will ignore the tank and cut stright to the carry, but most teams will attack what is right in front of them and already taking the most fire. so as long as the tank is first on the scene and closely followed by his/her carry, this pattern should continue.

Ehm... this is bullshit. There is no tank item that straight up ignores offensive stats. But for frickin' burst machines, there are items that straight up ignore defensive stats. Also, Tank items are generally more costly than brutalizer or LW. And you stating that tanks can 1v1 is straight up idiotic.
