Here's the problem: Your team comp. Yi's main weakness is CC. If your team has no CC, you may win early but lose anywhere past 15-20 min. You would need as much CC as possible in all lanes to be good with him. Also, use your Q for dodging fatal blows or CC, NOT A GAP CLOSER! (Unless there's nobody else around and the person you Q used or has no CC.) Yi's ult is a move speed steroid, use it to your advantage (especially with boots).

Of course this implies you are a decent/good Yi player already.

You dont need to build glass cannon. Devourer + Ruined King is all the damage you are going to need.

If you are not fed as fuck, build Bruiser. If you really want to go full glass cannon, wait until your team engages and then attack.

Also gank occasionally. If you are low elo, you can at least force a Flash even as Yi. Slap a Red Buff and you might actually get kills.

He is a champ designed for opportunistic and somewhat self adsorbed play style.

He is a champ who provides benefits to the team by taking literally everything to himself first, then solo carry you to victory. He can be quite annoying to play with as he requires a team to work around him, both in team comp as well as prioritising his needs first. So if you have to be a team player, don't even bother with playing as him, you won't succeed.

As Yi, decision making/risk and reward evaluation on the fly is a must, assuming you aren't playing him in strictly low elo bracket. Due to his very predictable and limiting moveset, you have to be very flexible personally in strategy as well as your pattern to avoid being capitalised. CS and kills matter a ton to you, so don't even think about mercy, just take and use whatever you can find.

Welcome to Yi, where your job is to prove how everyone is inferior.

Well for tips on playing him... don't use Q as a gap closer. At least, unless you need it, like getting to someone/something over a wall. Otherwise try to just walk up to someone unless you know they have no gap closers(dashes, flash, speed boosts faster than your own), rather try to use it to juke things. Skill shot? Q, make you untargettable, goes right through you. Targeted? Q right before it hits you, like it never happened. Heck, if its someone barreling toward you like Rammus or Sion just fucking Q and they're probably gonna go through you and it'll be really f'ing funny.

  1. dont play him
  2. if you do, which you shouldnt, you have to be a heartless selfish bastard with him. O your mid lane is losing? so what stacks devor, O their getting drag? so what stacks. Finally got my stacks now i can help!! split push the rest of the game. Team loses 4v5 in base(after getting no help from you) "WHY CANT YOU GUYS JUST HOLD> FEEDERS!!! REPORT"

So dont play yi

Spicy Rice2 votes

By that logic, they would get every drag, cuz its 5 stacks. Any devo jungle main knows that. And yes, yi cant gank easily early as he has no hard cc.

Honestly, it sounds like youve never seen a halfway decent yi player.

I have not seen a yi in plat in a long time haha This is what i have seen every yi player do, that wins, period.

So, if they are winning, whats the problem?

i would rather have a fun game than get completley destoryed by a team that abused the 4v5 but loses after 25 min when yi has his items. Team bassed game, yi brings zero team bassed abilities.

He is your clean up crew member. So ones you pansy's done your pathetic CC (who needs this really?) and little poke damage. A Yi walks in and shows you how it's done, by wiping out the team in seconds while you've been poking them with noodles for a couple of minutes.

But honestly, you obviously don't like Yi, too bad because he is a good champion for SoloQ (definitely in the lower brackets).

Practice with Yi and you will get it. Pro builds as well.

use his q to dodge important attacks, or as a gap closer. if you can get in aa range without using it (hide in a bush or organize cc with your team) then save the q for any dashes or blinks they might have, as well as to dodge attacks. if you have to use it as a gap closer, be wary as they can flash/dash as soon as you do. use w if you have enough time to wait for cd with it. can also be used to reset aa i think? dunno, i don't play him to that extent. and yeah, wait for the enemy team to blow their cc. and in teamfights, make sure you get at least one kill, not an assist, because that reduces your cooldown allowing for more time invulnerable and more damage. his e and r are pretty easy i think, its the q and w that require timing. which, essentially is what you need. learn to time your attacks right, target the squishy/damage dealers first, and you should be good to go

Spicy Rice1 votes

Umm, im only silver, but i feel like im a decent yi, so heres some tips i guess?

  1. Keep track of your passive. Best time to start a fight is when your double strike will proc on next auto. It provides a nice amount of damage along with your q to start a fight.

  2. You can use your w as an auto attack reset.

  3. Practice your alpha strike. If you get the timing down, you can follow peopls when they flash, take a thresh lantern, tp, literally anything. Also, you untargetable during it, so use it to dodge skill shots

As for runes, i suggest alot of att spd. I run 14% in runes and 5 % in masteries, but Cowsep, a challenger yi in korea uses sonething ridiculous like 25to 30%.

Lastly, do not engage a teamfight. No matter how fed you are, you are still yi, and are as squishy as a waterbaloon. Look for picks, i.e. if the enemy adc is farming bot, go kill them. With your ult and alpha strike, its very very hard for them to escape or 1v1

what does 'reset aa' mean? auto-attack? what does that mean?

Spicy Rice1 votes

It means to reset his auto attack. All auto attacks have an animation. Certain champion skills can be used to basically skip the animation, while still going through with the damage. That's what resetting an auto attack is. It allows you to basically get off 2 auto attacks in the time that would normally only allow for 1 auto attack.

what does 'reset aa' mean? auto-attack? what does that mean?

It means you can automatically basic attack after using it, like a Nasus Q. You can auto attack, use W, then immediately be able to auto attack, ignoring your attack speed. The main reason I see a lot of Yis lose is because they build pure glass cannon, which should not be. Getting a Titanic Hydra and Frozen Mallet on Yi can bump up his offensive capabilities by letting him live longer, giving him extra stick, and more on-hit damage. Titanic Hydra also gives him another basic attack reset, like his W. Also, get Devourer please. Dont get Warrior.

Past builds, you need to understand his mechanics, which have a little more depth than first seen. His Q is a gap closer, yes, but it should primarilly be used to evade damage unless you are certain you are simply cleaning up easy kills. It can let you avoid any non-DoT damage in the game, including Karthus ultimate. This is especially useful if the enemy has a lot of crowd control, which makes you a sitting duck. Your W is usually not what people think it should be used for. Out of combat, sure, use it to heal up. In combat, however, it should be used for the previously mentioned basic attack reset and to clutch damage reduce one or two spells since so much crowd control will he flying at you in combat that it will likely be useless for the heal and damage reduction past one non-CC spell. Your E is his simplest spell for depth. Activate it in combat to get a bunch of damage. Remember this is true damage though, so it might be better to save it for harder to kill targets. His R is also pretty simple, since it's a steroid, but knowing when to use it is pretty good to know as well. Activating it to close the gap is good as long as you are going to get the kill to extend the duration. Otherwise, try to get the full duration of the attack speed buff out of it. While you may already be clutch casting his Q and W, a lot to keep up with, you still need to know when his passive will proc. Sometimes, when you get enough items, you can killa target nearly instantly with a double strike plus another basoc attack, so you migt want to keep track of your passive, attack one target, and then switch to another target to kill them with the enhanced basic attack. This is especially good if you know the AA combo as Yi, being: Passive Enhanced AA+W+Instant AA+Titanic Reset (The importance of Sated Devourer comes in here since it can make the Titanic Reset attack a double strike as well)

I don't know why the OP is getting downvoted. Its an honest question. Ignore the hate OP, they are just Yi haters. Try posting this in Tips and Tricks next time though.

a good start would be to stop building essence reaver and PD first... and build things like botrk youmuus and i.e .. also yi is strongest with sated devourer because of his synergy with it. So jungle might be a good starting point too.

Ship 0F Ducks1 votes

just keep playing him, you'll know how strong he is/gets with each item u get....just takes time since hes super item dependent

in my opinion, never use W to auto reset.. i never do it, 35 second cool down for just another auto isn't worth....it has much much better uses elsewhere.

its better to even reduce damage from anything the enemy throws at you.....an enemy auto attack in a 1v1 against adc or a spell agaisnt mage. As long as you're autoing, you'll be healing and most likely stronger than them in terms of damage and dueling capabilities(depending on ur build ofc). But the moment you stop autoing(cc'd, kited etc) you'll be alot more vulnerable

FarRockBF1 votes

I used to main Yi. I'll give you an upvote (cause people are losers here and downvote everything) and some tips:

  1. Your first three items should be item 3153 item 3006 item 3142 99% of the time.

  2. In lane focus on CS, not damaging the enemy.

Some examples of WHEN you should engage the enemy:

a) He is within your minions so they will agro him b) He just blew some important spells so you know you can outdamage him c) You have your double strike up AND he cast a projectile at you (or minions are focusing you) - In this case, you would Q-auto him for substantial burst

Make sure to cast E when you Q to him so your autos will hurt more.

--- WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR LANE OPPONENT BUYS ARMOR ---

When he starts building tanky he now thinks you are weak.

Step 1. Let him push to your tower Step 2. ASK FOR GANKS. But even if you don't get a gank: Step 3. After the enemy casts their CC or mobility spell pop your ultimate and Q onto him. Hit E immediately and WAIL on him. Even with armor, your E will allow you to do very serious damage over time. He will realize he underestimated you and will start retreating. At this point use item 3144 active (this is why you buy it first) and keep autoing him. He will then summoner 4 to get away. No problem. Q to him and continue pounding on him till he's dead.

--- WHAT TO AVOID LATE GAME AS YI ---

Some things I see all Yis doing which is dumb:

  1. DO NOT engage for your team. Hell, don't even join the fight till the enemies are low or blow all their spells. You die VERY easily at all stages of the game
  2. DO NOT chase them into their jungle. All it takes is one enemy with CC and you are dead dead dead.

---WHAT TO DO LATE GAME---

  1. When the game is dragging out push top or bottom lane and take towers fast. Even if they entire enemy team comes for you, there is no way they can catch you with your ultimate and item 3142 both active. Impossible.

  2. summoner 12 to minions or wards near their base late game and pop Yomu or ultimate to kill towers super-fast before they can react (or inhibs!)

  3. Be the last to join team-fights and clean up that crap

  4. You take dragon/baron VERY quickly late game even as solo. Abuse this.

Good luck!
