Twisted Treeline: Pros and Cons of Jungling

Bârd··5 votes·681 views

Pros

  • More XP for your team
  • You can secure Vilemaw
  • Uses all gold sources on the map
  • Easy ganks on Treeline (Lots of openings, no wards)
  • Enemy team not guaranteed to have a jungler, so you might get camps for both teams
  • Smite bonuses; Golem buff from golems, Large heal from wraiths, and Gromp buff from Wolves
  • Global pressure just by existing due to a lack of wards.
  • Small map means you can interfere with fights whenever they happen

Cons

  • Devourer is a terrible item on Treeline
  • If the enemy doesn't run a jungler, one lane gets shoved in due to a 1v2
  • A duo lane can invade/kill you after pushing their lane
  • There is no "peaceful farm time" on Treeline
  • There are only 3 camps to clear on each side of the map
  • There are no buff monsters, and only one epic monster
  • Due to the small map, you will get counterganked if you take more than 5 seconds to kill your target
  • Your team uses up one summoner spell on smite, rather than an ignite or exhaust (slight disadvantage in teamfights)

Junglers are a situational thing on TT, so you have to know when to take a jungler and when to just take a duo lane.

I'd have to argue the Devourer point depending on how the game is going. An early Vil which is entirely possible depending on comp can stack it pretty fast, but then you'd be stacking it fast anyhow as being in a position to do an early Vil means you are considerably ahead.

Problem I find with duo lanes is the loss of XP and that is mostly the downfall of such games. Usually they don't bother checking their jungle because they run a kill lane for whatever damn reason so if you have a jungler with a fast clear time he can just outscale the duo lane so damn hard.

My issue with devourer is that there just aren't enough camps to stack it.

You only have 3 camps on your side of the map, and you put yourself at risk by farming the enemy jungle. You can take Vilemaw for stacks, sure, but you aren't going to be able to solo it like a dragon. Champion kills can stack it fast enough, but that is still slow (1 stack per kill, need 30 stacks). Due to smaller team sizes, you will only get 3 stacks off of an ace.

The lower jungle size, the lack of scuttle crab, lack of an easily solo'd boss monster, and the smaller team size delay getting sated by a lot.

On Rift, the average time to hit sated is ~20 minutes if you aren't horribly behind. Due to those disadvantages, getting sated on TT would probably take ~30 minutes on average. Since games on treeline tend to not last all that long, odds are good that the game will end before you hit sated.

Also, while Duo lanes are indeed less efficient than a jungler in terms of gold and XP, you gain massive pressure in exchange. One of my favorite strats for ranked 3's is to run Zilean Renekton toplane, harass down our opponent, push the lane, and then invade the enemy jungler while their toplaner is too low to help.

Fair points. Yes a good devourer is around the 25 minutes, I'll not bother posting my fastest time because no doubt some Korean challenger team has done it in half the time.

I have a big, big bone to pick with duo lanes, so much so if I have to lane I pick champions I know can disengage relatively easily and stay a little back to farm (Syndra , Kindred) being my favourite for such a task currently). I just find it almost cheesy and awful if you cannot get an early advantage. Pressure helps, but if you don't kill that laner he'll hit 6 before you and when that Hecarim ganks at level 9 cause your bot lane hasn't been checking jungle or you have been too busy trying to force trades he's farmed up like a baws. Yeah I just find it horrible and unfun depending on which side of the fence you are. You either stomp and have the time of your life because you faceroll the laner, then the jungle then probably the 3 man dive the bot lane or the laner hangs back, farms up and just nopes your every engage.

Faced a Yasuo/Karma lane as Kindred. By god I hated it but they were either bad or my juke game was on point. If it wasn't for the top rolling over the Riven I'd probably have tilted.

I think Jax is a fun option for TT because of his great ganks and fast clear time abilities, not to mention he can 1v1 without ignite or heal.

since the new turrets had been added it´s a lot harder to shut down a lane 2v1, so right now it´s better to have a jungler. If you can´t deny the opponent and get a successfull invade off with the duo you´ll get outleveled very fast.
