What happened to Maokai s8?

Eh idk, I used to see a bunch of Maokai s7 but now I rarely see him being played. I've only started playing around mid-s7 so I don't really understand the meta and all that. Just wondering if someone could tell me what happened to Maokai in s8 and if he's still viable since I've always wanted to play him.

I don't personally play him, but a top laner I duo with a lot does occasionally. The only change I've heard him mention is that his W (I think, the dash/root) was changed from %hp to flat damage. He can still work pretty well from what I've seen though, you just don't deal as much damage.
