Less Champs, More Balance, More Fun

One of the biggest problems facing league of legends, other than dynamic queue, is balance. Balance has been a problem in all video games since their creation. I understand that balance is very hard to achieve in a game like league of legends where you have 123 champions, 197 items, minions, towers jungle camps, ap, ad, mr, armor, and a ton of other things. I get that true balance may be impossible. Thats ok. no one is saying that balance shold be easy.

but here is the thing. you are constantly trying to balance the game every week with each patch and all of the reworks and item changes and just general buffs and nerfs. It IS a trial and error thing that will take time to get right. the problem is, every season you flip the game upside down and every month or two you add a new champion and sometimes you add in or remove a bunch of items from the game. Those changes affect the balance just as much, if not more. I know you do these things to keep the game fresh and interesting and you want to make every part feel important. I get it and i salute you for your efforts, but its wrong.

The most important part of a game is that it is balanced. if things arent fun to play against because it's broken or its not fun to play with, the game is failing. and the game is failing constantly BECAUSE you keep making these big changes. You have a hard time with balance because its impossible to balance the ever changing environment.

look at overwatch. Im sure you hear that a lot, and there is a good reason for it. Overwatch is possibly the most balanced game ive ever played. there are somethings that seem a little over powered, but EVERYTHING has counter play or at least something keeping it in check. This was easy for Blizzard to do because the current pool of heroes is 21. its not hard to mess around with 21 characters to make them all balanced. And because overwatch is balanced, and by the nature of the game being that every match is a little bit different, it stays fresh and interesting. I could play overwatch for probably atleast a year without getting sick of it as a game. maybe after a year, it wouldnt hurt if blizzard released a 22nd hero that was just as balanced as the others. Boom. new game play. They can add a new map every once in a while. Blizzard doesnt need to do much to overwatch to keep it interesting because it is balanced and because every match is a little different.

Now lets look at league of legends again. Every match is somewhere between a little different and ridiculously different game play but it isnt balanced. Riot, YOU ARE HALF WAY THERE! You do not need to release new champions every 2 months and changing everything every 6-12 months to keep it interesting. Now all you need to do to make the game the best it can be is balance it.

I know that this is a focus lately. Youve been more focus on making the current champion pool better rather than adding more champions. Thats great. Do that even harder! No more new champions until the game is balanced and no more absurd total game changes ever. The game will still be fun and wont get old if it is balanced.

I know ive repeated myself a lot in this, i used a lot of words to say Fewer Champions, More Balance, And More Fun. I think you get the point. Please just do it!

I've got it!

1 Champion.

Everyone plays that Champion.

Game is now perfectly balanced.

Who wants to play? (Not me, that game sounds like it sucks.)

the most balanced game? overwatch? oh! you mean the game that you have to constantly switch characters in order to counter some other character that the enemy has since that character counters the one you are playing as... sorry but Overwatch may be fun but it's not a balanced game in the slightest. You cannot say "i will pick and learn the fuck out of Y" since that means that as soon as someone plays the counter to that character you are screwed. Learn what balance means please

Although the game would prob be more balanced with less champions.... It.. just wouldn't work for a game like league... (Not that riot is doing anything that seems to be working right now). Just because the statement is true, doesn't mean its the right route to go.

I disagree. Yes new champions and other big changes are great for the short term of the game, they significantly harm the game in the long term because if the game never balances, it could get to the point where the concept of balancing the game even slightly is laughable.

Stopping production to balance the game would reap tremendous long term benefits as well as allow for healthier methods of introducing new champions and concepts

I think one of the important things to think about in league of legends is how unhealthy it is to have a meta. The meta exists because some champions are extremely powerful while others are not. The problem with a meta is that if the champion you want to play isn't in or doesnt supply that 2nd tank your team so desparately needs, you are going to lose the game so you are forced into a situation where you must either choose the game play that wins the game and brings you some entertainment, but not much because it isnt the gameplay style you were craving or you choose the champion you wanted to play originally but then you still dont achieve the gameplay you were craving because it doesnt fit the meta.

For instance, if one of my friends really enjoys playing kha zix jungle, but kha zix is in a place where he doesn't deal damage effectively in the current meta and the champion that is currently rocking the meta might be mao kai hyper tank but my friend despises his game play, they are forced to choose between attempting to have fun with kha zix or winning the game with mao kai but being bored for the next 35 minutes, well that is a lose/lose scenario for my friend.

If riot takes their time to work on balancing their game before they make big changes like new champions or items, this unhealthy experience will never go away. Riot needs to fix the game so the meta is 100% skill based rather than OP champion based
