The biggest issue was, in fact, as stated, that Riot didn't give Dominion its due. The population of players when the mode was newer was even with what ARAM has now. The only reason that the game mode ended up dying off is because of the following reasons:
-
Riot continues to refuse to delete bot accounts when they are reported. It should be one of their top priorities that these accounts get deleted since it's not only a security risk for players account info in game, but also for peoples bank accounts that are buying these accounts for money over the internet. If an account is clearly a bot, and multiple people from the same game report that the account is a bot, it shouldn't be too hard for Riot to set up a system where the player has to verify the account as being a real player when we log in. Then if someone gets reported as a bot a popup lets them know "Hey someone reported you as a bot, to verify you're not we're going to log you off and require you pass a captcha verification to log back in." This would require so much extra work for botting that it wouldn't be worth it anymore, the bots would get constantly kicked off the game and it would drive down the number of bots significantly.

The game mode was never properly promoted and wasn't inclusive in additions to the game. When we were given things to earn, like honor and whatever, Dominion was skipped over for this. Never got a snow theme, never was included in promotions or anything, heck I don't even think they added any eastereggs for the holidays or anything. You couldn't earn mastery, you couldn't earn keys, you couldn't earn anything but the standard EXP and IP. The lack of support in this way caused it to be ignored by players because "I can't earn mastery tokens for getting an S on this map, so why should I play it?"

Lack of a balance due to reusing assets. Dominion was a different game mode, sure some basic items should have totally stayed in there, but Dominion would have been a lot easier to balance if they had just given it its own item set. They sort of did this, but none of those items ended up being balanced because they were thrown in as a Band-Aid as the games balance got completely screwed up; and once the balance issues started hitting really hard, the population of players dipped down, which started this dark hole of Riot going "well not enough people play..." and the players going, "well if you actually freaking supported the game more people would play..." to which Riot would respond, "but there aren't enough players for us to focus on it..." and rinse wash and repeat...
Rather than fixing their mistakes Riot simply gave up on a part of their community, bold face lied to us about why (read below); and we got next to nothing as a consolation prize for them removing a game mode that had one of the best dynamic soundtracks for a MOBA map, was a fun break from the daunting tiredness of SR and its clones, and could have been one of the games best games modes with proper support or promotion. They treated the community that played it still as if they were second rate customers and pushed us aside like we didn't matter to them because SR is where their money is at. Well if you had done your jobs and properly ran this game mode the way it should have been, with its own dev team and its own balance squad and promoted it even a tiny bit things could have been much better for it.
There are a reason why there are so many "What's up with Def. Not. Dominion" threads on this forum over the last month. People are getting tired of the same old same old. They have figured out that the RGM is simply being used as a promotional tool for skin lines and they are tired of their wants for something more being ignored. They can look back to this game mode and say, "oh yeah, you know what in its hay-day Dominion was fun to play... wonder why they don't bring that back?" then post on the forums about it time and time again to only continue to be ignored by Riot or any of its staff.
League of Legends wasn't so boring back in the day. There were a bunch of different game modes, people played all sorts of custom games, you could jump from one mode to another if something got you on tilt, there were always people willing to jump in with you for a quick game...
Now, we don't even have public chat rooms; my friends list is slowly going dead with people who aren't playing anymore because the game is stagnant, and one of the few things that Riot could do to bring life back into the game is being completely ignored.
(from above: Yeah, I remember that Riot. Your dev team lied to us straight up. You told us you were removing Dominion as a selectable map because you were removing the maps resources from the server because it 'took up too much space' which was clearly BULL because now we have Ascension and D.N.Dominion which both use them! Next time, don't lie to us and just say 'We don't want to support this anymore because it's too hard and we EFFED-up)
