Remember all those "off builds" we had in season 3?

Can we have some of those back?

Maybe a couple of new ones?

I remember fondly playing stuff like ap yi or ap sion back in my earlier league days... nowadays when a champion has a build path or playstyle that rito doesnt approve of it is immediately nerfed into oblivion so we have to play the game how they want it to be played and there is no room for creativity. I cant even play top Warwick anymore because the nerfs on him crippled his laning and forced him into an exclusive jungle role and he is utterly useless anywhere else. I had a lot of fun playing sniper ap reksai too before his ap ratio got trashed. This is just one of many example. Sad times we live in.

To be fair, AP Yi, AP Sion and AP Rek'Sai were sorta bullshit.

On the other point, you have to balance for a champions best role. In the case of Warwick he wasn't pushed into a jungle role. He was OP in the jungle role and had to be nerfed. When the playstyle is the same for two roles, nerfing one cannot help but nerf the other.

I still never got AP Rek as a thing. She had like a 2.5 scaling on her Q. It was more of a " imma just screw around now" build

Same thing with AD Morde now. "I'm going to trade literally all of the power in my kit for slightly better scaling on my Q". Makes sense.

A 1.0 ratio high speed spell at 1650 range on a 7 second cooldown with a dash for disengage and the ability to back off and heal.

That was AP Rek'Sai.

The speed of the missile made her almost as annoying as pre-rework Nidalee. It isn't a healthy playstyle.

AP yi is back, cowsep made vid on it and since he play yi he has to be right, right?

but lets face facts that both ap yi and ap sion were ridiculously broken mechanics in the game, I mean both were extremely fun, but just really broken

... The True Bard eh? Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savoir TopBard christ? Wrecker of Rivens. Destroyer of Darius. The true 2 shot king of the rift and Bane of all those who lack defense?

Kitten of Evil1 votes

This is heresy! It is clear that the Bardungle is the only true path for our glorious celestial overlord. Yea, though his first clear was slow, verily his ganks were most surprising and effective. And his ultimate the pure manifestation of his duality -- the Bard ult giveth pentakills, and the Bard ult taketh away pentakills.

Maybe you're just not looking for them hard enough.

Cough.

By definition, off builds are by-product builds. Adding, for example, AP ratios that would go largely unused to a mostly AD champion seems to be what you are asking for here, facilitating them being built in a different (albeit usually less effective) manner.

not sure about support. But the last time Miss fortune got a mini rework, I definitely remembered a Mage Fortune build. Riot gave her Q an AP ratio, deciding that their was nothing wrong with the off build. (Though I certainly don't recall people using it right now.)

but off builds are by-products, so riot shouldn't intentionally add an off build, when reworking a champions kit. Though if I recall correctly Riot supports off builds mostly when they offer different powerspikes, (while keeping the champions primary function intacked.) And only a few champs have very different play styles (thinking mostly of Shako) whether they build AD or AP.

Ez is viable AD and AP, AD is ranged poke to death, while AP is RQWE burst, with worse overall poke.

SH Azykan1 votes

AP still has good poke with W and lichbane Q's AP just has no waveclear aside from ult, whereas AD can clear rather well. AD also has a better early game, whereas AP requires like 3 items to really come online

Try out ad malzahar jungle. It still works well.

LadyRenly1 votes

Dunno how well it will work with no mana pots though

SH Azykan1 votes

grab runeglaive after the tear for mana return. Build up your AD items and then sell off runeglaive later. It works decently well

Ez dePaz1 votes

I am still doing fine without pots, talisman start solves mostly the mana problems, pre 6 ganks are harder to pull off but just getting drag and power farm usually make it work. And if you really need mana consider mp5 yellows and hunter's potion.

AP Yi is back on the PBE. Check the Cowsep's youtube channel - gets a penta and heals to full = balanced (Devourer + guinsoo+ hextech+ some AP)

SleepyLionCub1 votes

ADC leblanc is back now.

lulu top is a thing now too.

Drak Pinebreaker1 votes

AP Rengar?

Haven't done it, but according to some streams/YouTube videos it looks like it still works hilariously well.

NemeBro1 votes

Riot only gets rid of off-builds when they think they're totally bullshit, like what they did with AD bruiser Fizz (and I loved me some AD Bruiser Fizz).

Mr Broken Wings1 votes

Sword of the Divine. Bring. It. Back. God, playing rengar with that item was hilarious, even less counterplay then now, miss the oneshots.

kJs1 votes

Riot likely won't purposely have buff a champion because they want an off-build to be played more often, unless it is something like a Bruiser secondary with a tank primary role which are basically the same thing for the majority of champions, you just deal less damage with the later and focus more on peeling.

Something like AP Yi and ADC Yi likely won't have their off-builds returned because it would be a pain to deal with for the balance team.

They are hard to balance, though there are some that already exist:

AP Varus (which is actually getting a huge buff with his ult applying 3 stacks of Blight) Mage Fortune AD Jungle Malzahar AD/AP Ezreal AD/AP Gangplank AD/AP TF Tank Annie AP Rengar Devourer Tahm Kench

And then there are a few others which I really WANT to try but are not very good. Vel'Kritz, for example. His crit animation is amazing and it's a shame it's virtually never used.

mage fortune is fun, I run her in my 3v3 games, the wave clear is amazing with luden's

Kitten of Evil1 votes

I use her in ARAM sometimes when the team's already pretty AD-heavy. But then I've also run AD Elise sometimes there too.

ChaosThief1 votes

AD gangplank is more like the default. Sort of.

Mageplank is the only way I prefer to play gangplank. None expect the global ult to murder from afar. It's always fun to see enemies flash out of just 3 waves of the ult.
