I guess it's a good thing these nerfs went nowhere near the reason why Tahm is good then, huh?

No, he's not broken actually. No one even knew he existed until they started playing him in Worlds, and then all the sheep came out of the woodworks crying, "Tahm Kench is OP! Tahm Kench is broken! Waaah!" (Just like every other champion the "pros" play)

Maybe the person you're replying to is a "fucking Tahm shit" main. I am, and I personally believe that people who main the champions are obviously going to know more about the champion than someone who sees him played in Worlds, or has played against him in game and gotten rocked because they didn't know how to play against him.

Riot was right. He should have been allowed to have the damage he has, because he is a single-target damage dealer. So many of you people on this forum don't seem to realize that. The vast, vast majority of the time his W, Devour, can only be used **once **during a teamfight. Do you save a teammate? If you do, then you're simply there to tank and cc with your Q. Do you eat an enemy? There goes your single-target damage. You people act like his W has stacks on it, like Caitlyn's traps, that let him just eat as many people as he wants one by one doing huge damage to each. No, he can use it once every teamfight.

What Jbels said is true, and the reason he's getting downvoted, and why I will get downvoted, is because you people are in denial. Riot gave an explanation as to why he was staying as he was, and you bitched and moaned and cried, and they finally gave in. Pretty embarrassing honestly, when you have champs like Jax who can literally 1v5 a team and make it out alive, Mundo, who builds full tank and still does shit tons of damage (sounds familiar huh?), Illaoi who has an ultimate tier ability as her E, but nope. Here on the League of Legends boards we're throwing a tantrum over a single-target tank who no one can seem to learn to play against, so instead we have to scream "Tahm Kench is OP!" or "Make Tahm Kench choose!" or whatever other diarrhea of the mouth I've seen ever since worlds.

I'm just gonna point out your argument sounds like a really strong reference to Irelia who was totally not OP and quite weak at release and for a while until HotshotGG happened. Phrase: Nerf Irelia mean anything?

Personally, my issues with Tahm are that he is too reliable, has too much stick/denial capability, tankiness is far too effective, and he has lane problems even if his issues in team skirmishes/fights are less pronounced, it is often the lane that decides the pace of the game.

Anidan2 votes

That whole 'Better Nerf Irelia' thing came from a nerf that seemed to come out of left field, not anything that actually had anything to do with the community's perception of balance. It wasn't because of HotShotGG. From what I remember, HotshotGG was more known for champions like LeBlanc and Nidalee way back when anyway, not Irelia.

rinsujo1 votes

Yeah, you're right. "Better Nerf Irelia" is used either when a) as you said, a nerf comes out of left field - "Oh, jeez, Naut is a broken OP support, let's tweak shaco's numbers to balance it." or b) more commonly anymore, when a champ (Sona, Cassiopeia, Morde) receives numerous small nerfs patch after patch after patch.

Not that Irelia nerfs were unjustified - she has a kit with TONS of good stuff in it. Kinda like Tahm.

A Miss Fortune4 votes

The term broken is to define something that has innate balance issues that make it unhealthy for the game and give it little to no real counterplay. It encourages you to have no interaction with something and number balancing will just worsen the problem.

Currently one of the major reason Tahm is so broken is because of his Devour, he can invalidate someone from the game on a pretty low cooldown. The ability itself is infinitely valuable in gold, and while there are similar abilities in the game most of them are ultimates (Bard) or aren't as flexible to use (Fizz). Basically Tahm's Devour discourages interaction in the game and there's almost no counterplay/counter-measures to prevent him from devouring an ally and because of his powerful slow and tankiness it's also extremely difficult to prevent him from devouring most enemies in most cases.

One of the other reasons why Tahm is considered broken is because of his ultimate passive that lets him cheat the game and be able to deal extremely high damage with a 100% strictly tank build. Though this is more of an overpowered issue than a broken issue as it can be solved with number balancing.

So yes by definition of broken, Tahm is very broken because of his kit so heavily discouraging interaction and he also suffers from his ultimate passive making him fairly overpowered as seen in his high pick/bans in competitive play.

Probably won't be a reason to pick him anymore with that R passive nerf if they don't put power somewhere else. I understand people don't like how he can do so much damage while building tank but the other unique thing he has which is saving teammates with his W got a harsh nerf with the removal of the speedboost.

In lane it's now only truly strong for getting someone out of hard CC because saving someone who's on low health can often just mean a delay in the inevitable or a double kill since its so easy for the enemy to keep pace with his slow ass.

I'd prefer if they nerfed these things while also improving the active on his ult so I have a fucking reason to use it for more than just getting back to lane faster or give us a reason to use his W spit for more than just helping to clear a wave of minions.

Basically, okay, you want his numbers to be nerfed? I'm fine with that. But give us some more utility in exchange for that so we can demonstrate more skill with Tahm.

As a pretty consistent Tahm player, I don't feel that these nerfs will do all that much. Everyone (including RIOT) seems to forget that even with these nerfs, he can still 1v1 ANYONE as long as he has the mana to eat them and chunk down nearly half their health. Yeah, his AA and Q won't hit as hard, but that just means it'll take a few more autos to kill that Warmogs Malphite he was dueling. These nerfs are in the right direction, but I do not think they are going to change things in a significant manner

SpecterVonBaren17 votes

I'm also a frequent Tahm player and currently he's pretty weak as a support for the reasons I talked about before.

His biggest contribution bot lane is his W for saving his ADC. His E is purely selfish, his ult active is almost useless outside of organized play, his ult passive doesn't get ramped up fast enough to be a huge damage threat till late game due to lack of gold and his Q, while good poke with ranks in it, is the kind of damage that other supports can bring too.

Meanwhile top lane where he's strongest, he's going to be losing HALF of the damage on his ult passive at rank 1, this is a huge decrease in the power of a champ that doesn't have much utility in teamfights outside of his W, which if he uses it to save someone will mean he doesn't get to use it for its damage.

The reason he's good right now is because he has good damage and tankiness, while I understand that a champ shouldn't be based around just having good stats, they aren't giving him anything back to make up for this loss, they need to redistribute that power to other aspects of his kit.

never really looked at it from that perspective, as i always play him as a support and not a solo laner

SpecterVonBaren7 votes

I used to like him support but he hasn't felt that good for me to use bot ever since they removed the movespeed boost.

Retillin6 votes

And here is Riot's problem. They wanted him to support and top. Fine. But they didn't look at the balance of both. They expected him to be played support where he was strong but not super OP. But this means that with a higher economy (gold) he was a terror of a solo laner. Remind you of anyone... Lulu

Hey, another incoming Tahm Kench here, he's my second to Braum. These nerfs kinda saddened me, but you're correct, the damage is extraneous to some degree, so I hope this doesn't hurt Kench too bad in viability. But, revert the speed buff so he can at least get away with his ally. At least that should be given, similar to how Ahri was given more utility and bam more play, do the same for Kench. Because I don't want to see a champion that just completely falls off, one that I honestly enjoy so much to play, who I probably will play still regardless. Oh, and blind haters, I didn't forget you. Unless you have some sort of long-standing play history and have used old Mr. Kench many times, I'd suggest keeping your mouthes shut, let the big boys talk this out in a diplomatic manner, until you can compose yourself into a more, elegant manner

I am with you there. That was part of the reason I liked playing him support since I could save teammates by eating them. Now it's a lot harder to get away if you don't have any movement speed items and you can forget about it if you get CC'd. Might as well spit them out so at least one of you can escape. I believed his damage output and sustain was a bit too much, but his utility was fine before.

Glad I discovered AP bruiser Tahm then.

On another note people seem to forget that Tahm can really only mess with one person at a time and the heal from his passive is pretty meh.

Serika Zero2 votes

I know this is Eu Lcs, but this is why people find Tahm annoying: https://youtu.be/TW_UwbMnoxQ?t=15m40s From 15:40 to 16:05 in the video.

And this is what Tahm can do even in late game. When your hyper carry is in a bad spot or waiting for cooldowns, he can save people from totally mess up situations. Like in the video above. There's no other champion in the game, who would've been able to save Graves in that situation.

And that's why many people hate Tahm. I don't have personally a problem with him. I play stuff like Ahri or Diana. With Diana I'll delete his carry before he can even reach and eat to protect them. And with Ahri I'll just melt them with Qs :3

Celeste Benal4 votes

Honestly, these are pretty slight nerfs. I will still build him as an AP Bruiser and Q your ass into the ground from level 1.

you auto a guy 3 times and basically get a garen ult that disables for a huge chunk of time.

Hooray! Meanwhile however, Ilaoi is still untouched.

Ikr. Her E is at the level of an ultimate at the moment

EcchiOtakuTM2 votes

Because illaoi is weak only players who dont know what repositioning after an attack is and think she's op.

MrWasjig1 votes

Have you seen her healing? It's like she has Spirit Visage built into her stats. Not to mention she's just generally annoying. Not to mention as well, that her skillshots are freaking chodes! And when you have about 5 of those flying at your face, excuse me for not being Korean.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Have you seen what executioner calling after laning phase guts her healing? Have you seen how useless she gets once you avoid her ulti? Heck you can even CC her mid-ulti/w and negate it and dodge her entire kit.

If you let her ulti a group it's your own team's fault. Illaoi might have damage but her flaws outweigh it by a landslide.

MrWasjig1 votes

Doesn't make her any less irritating. Both in gameplay, and her character (Ever become a vessel? Sometimes it's NOT possible to not become a vessel)

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Ok tips since you and other people need to hear it again.

Passive drop all nearby to 1 HP don't kill them off then once they're all at 1 hp kill them all at once so she can't just slowly replace them

Q-dodge

W- focus on dodging tentacles, or CC her mid-W to interrupt it

E- Dodge, if hit focus on killing illaoi or harassing her down, if you have no way to harass her just play safe and become a vessel by leaving and kill 3 tentacles

when lane phase is over do the same but your team should focus on illaoi to force her to ulti and leave so she waste ulti, If there's no executioner's calling on the adc when lane phase is over your team already messed up.

R- don't group up for her to land it, CC her mid-leap to stop it complete, if she activates it just leave and regroup she's useless once it ends

If your team is in a position where you can't retreat from her ulti your team already messed up.

She has major flaws easily exploitable. And if E hits you I wouldn't be surprised if you expect to live after ever blitz/thresh hook

She isn't irritating just takes more effort to actually play and beating the basics of repositioning into players.

MrWasjig1 votes

She IS irritating. I don't care how exploitable she is (but I will say I fully acknowledge it). I still find her to be the most annoying champion in the game. Forget Fizz, forget Yasuo, or LeBlanc or the usual suspects everyone hates, for me it's Illaoi. I cannot stand this champion at all. Yes, she has a thematic that's well implemented but I find that entire thematic extremely irritating. When I become a vessel (which isn't always avoidable) I don't want to hear her condescending tones in my ear hole while I laboriously kill three tentacles, nor do I want to know every time she fucking recalls! If muting someone ALSO muted all voice lines of their champion I'd do it every time Illaoi is in game, even if they were on my team.

But that's just me. My opinion, my feelings.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Illaoi unlike the rest needs a rework. She's just too exploitable and does heavy damage when a team fumbles and makes an incorrect decision.

If they made her do pure magic damage, hybrid scaling, give her non-movement impairing CC but made vessel not happen if you leave her E range and completely remove vessel if near 3 tentacle deaths instead of having to last hit 3 tentacles. Her damage would lower due to black cleaver no longer working, and she could be a bit more consistent due to non-movement impairing CC and rylia can be a core item. I don't want to gut her just rebalance her power with such a change. which would allow for lowering E's strength + black cleaver synergy since the gain of non-movement impairing CC would be available.

MrWasjig1 votes

They can do whatever they want to her, but if they just removed that horribly designed E I would be worlds happier. Not content with her, I'd still want her out altogether but a step is a step. Also it wouldn't hurt if they fix the visual/hitbox of the tentacles because it is Blitzcrank Rocket Grab levels of wonky. One too many times I've thought "Okay I'm clear" THWACK! "What!? How did that hit me!? I was clear!" Nothing is more infuriating (excluding Illaoi herself) than misaligned visuals and hitboxes.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

The e isn't horribly design, you move or die and if they implemented that instead of killing 3 tentacles being near 3 tentacle deaths removed it along with leaving the range would not apply vessel it wouldn't feel so strong to those who couldn't dodge a slow moving skillshot..... And yes some of the visuals need updating to match hitboxes.

TahmKench Expert3 votes

Let's take a minute to think about the rationality of this nerf.

Will Tahm still be a incredibly common pick?

If no then:

Will, Tahm still be a meta pick?

If no then:

Will, Tahm still be effective in the roles that he plays?

If yes then:

Will Tahm ever be picked if he is now outclassed?

If yes then:

Why?

In my opinion, he will:

  1. Have a horrible time with his second major buff as jungle Tahm. He may become a two back jungler which would make me never pick him for jungle.

  2. Make him have poor per-health-damage on auto attacks, which makes fighter Tahm obsolete. Another reason I won't pick him.

  3. No longer be able to solo duel with ANY build due to both nerfs affecting that ability, which is a poor poor attribute for any champion.

  4. Still be considered one of the most OP champions regardless of his pick-rate because, no matter what, the boards will BEG for nerfs to his W.

I will have no reason to pick Tahm over Diana for the jungle anymore if these nerfs go through, and I main Tahm jungle.

I will have no reason to pick Tahm over Braum for support.

I will have no reason to pick Tahm over any top-laner.

Phoenix Kotori 1 votes

They have similar level of tankness & dmg for volibear & Mundo, but their kits lack a real hard CC compared to kench Q & W & the ability to save allies. While Maphl & Rammus have comparable CC & tankness their damage is clearly inferior to his & again can't save allies.

Penns1 votes

And how about the fact that Tahm has only single target damage/cc and a situational kit? I mean, the champs I listed have 4-5 more win rate than him for a reason lol

Phoenix Kotori 1 votes

Voli & Mundo are mostly single damage as well. Rammus is only single CC.

Additionally all 4 of them are a bit more simple champions to play than kench, so thus raising their win rate.

air tiger14 votes

You aren't the first person who has stopped maining a champ after a rightful nerf. It's called FOTM, and you are riding that train.

The rest of us are breathing easier because his kit was toxic. And for what it's worth, these nerfs aren't extreme and he'll likely still be both viable and annoying.

SKOBODO2 votes

So... They're nerfing him so he'll be weaker than on release? I suspected this might happen, they should've just left it at 4/5/6 instead of buffing it to 4/6/8.

I'm not sure why they kept buffing him so much on release. He was fine on release, then they made him OP, and now they might nerf him a bit too much. Riot is not good at moderate balancing, unfortunately. I think it would be better to just bring it back to 4/5/6 and see how well he works then.

Hello I am Bird1 votes

Well, I for one, think that greater powerspikes over a period of time instead of a bullshit powerspike at level 6 is a much better approach.

SKOBODO3 votes

2/4/6 is not more power over time than 4/5/6, it just makes him a lot weaker early on, weaker than he was on release.
