Is the next champion getting a pure damage ult?

Like I know you guys at riot love game changing displacement ult, but come on. Like all of the last champions have had no damage in their ults. What happened to the good ole fashioned "if you're low health you die" ults? Like Jinx or Ziggs or Vel'Koz?

At this point, I'm ok if it isn't PURE damage ult, but please not another non-damaging ult. Enough champs have enough non-damaging ults.

Edit: Ok changed mobility :P

Edit2: I like specifics :P

(the last 10 new champs released)

Ryze Taliyah Taric AurelionSol Jhin Shen Poppy Illaoi Kindred Fiora

(Ironically, most of these are champ updates lol)

6/10 of those champions have non-damaging ults. 3/4 of the ones that do damage it isn't the primary purpose. And the one that does intend to do damage......idk is an adc? Point is only 1/10 of the ults of the last 10 champs is intended to damage. The rest its just a good side effect.

Now if we go off of only new champions

Taliyah AurelionSol Jhin Illaoi Kindred TahmKench Ekko Bard RekSai Kalista

6/10 of the champions, again, have non-damaging ults. 2/4 of the ones that do damage, it isn't their primary purpose (I assume on ekko it is just cause the damage is so high). So we have 2 out of the last 10 fully new champions that their ult being used for damage which are Jhin and Ekko

See what I mean now? We haven't had a champion in a while where their ult is intended to damage.

(I put time into the 2nd edit and don't wanna just dump it so I'm posting it lol)

What about Sol?

What about Sol?

Thought that might come up lol. It's not really pure damage and its still the minority of like the last 10 champs. Kin, Tahm, Kali, Rek, etc don't have damaging ults. And Ryze is next in line.

Fondling Gems1 votes

whoah whoah whoah. You just left my main off that list. Maximum offense taken!

But yeah, I see where you are coming from, although I will mention that the utility his ult provides actually has a direct impact on his dmg done since it pushes them into P/W range or slows them down for his P/W.

Aurelion, Jhin, Illaoi, Bard's also fairly recent for a not mobility based ult.

Oleandervine1 votes

Bard can be dropped from that list if you change it to "strictly utility ults" instead of "mobility."

I mean, Jarvan is still my favorite champ after all this time and while Cataclysm isn't THE reason for that, it's certain one OF them. If I played Taliya, I know I'd be trying with every ult to pin someone to a wall with it and just spam spells on them while they twitch around and die. Mobility is what makes this game exciting. It's what makes League's Gamplay good and Dota's garbage. Dota is a better strategy game, but league is a better game game, and the vast amount of mobility is definitely the reason for it as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know man, people hate kill button ults.

I actually like non damaging or low damage ults because i am the type that likes to skirmish and champs with ultility based ults dont have to worry about long cooldowns before going in. Like if i a am playing rek it doesnt matter if my ult is up i have all my dammage ready to go all the time

Uh, fiora's is fully intended to do damage along with jhin. Recount

For the second group, illaoi is damage

Lol, the damage on Illaoi's ult isn't the primary use of it. Sure. The primary use of it is to spawn five tentacles that do nothing but damage. And give her W a 2 second cooldown. And her W does...damage.

I never said it was. Only for Jhin and Ekko was the damage the primary use

they have mentioned many times that they don't like pure damage champs, as it's harder to balance, and for team play.

harder to balance shouldn't really need explaining.

team play meaning. if you can have someone that does decent damage but Also do something else (utility), you would ideally pick that person over someone that is pure damage.

in example. I would rather have someone that does damage and can root champs over someone that does just damage

They said this somewhere?

Also, it shouldn't be that hard to balance. I mean look at most burst mages or adc's. Look at VK, Jinx, Lucian, etc. All of them are balanced.

Jinx has a root, what is VK I am confused? Lucian has no utility that is true, but I would say his quick dashes are something to note.

and it is fairly hard to balance, if a champ has No utility at all, they should do the most damage, atleast more damage over someone that does damage and utility. so you have to value the cost of say a stun. how much damage should someone receive to make it balanced compared to a stun?

VK is Vel'Koz

They don't have to have NO utility. I'd just prefer a 'if you're low health you die if my ult hits' ult. Not any zhonyas or travelling or mobility ults. If they have utility in the kit itself or cc that would be fine. It's just the ult being pure utility for like the past 10 champions that I don't like. CC or mobility in the champs kit though is fine...its actually expected. If they don't have any cc or mobility what use are they? We just don't have to put any of that utility in the ult :P

Vel'Koz has a slow, and a knock up? so idk what you are talking about

Uh me neither o.o. It's ok for champs to have utility in their kit. I never said that they couldn't. I was saying it SHOULDN'T be in the ULT.

VK's ult is purely damaging. So he's a part of the champs that have pure damage ults. I think you got confused thinking I meant champs should have pure damage KITS. I'm ok with them having utility in their kits. I just want their ult to be a damage ult and not utility.

How many champions from the entire list of champions have pure damage ults? They're actually pretty rare and often really shitty to play against because that champion generally just deletes you when it's up (Syndra, Veigar, Garen, Darius) and spends the rest of their time waiting for it to come back up again because their damage is mediocre without it.

Seriously, go figure out how many of the entire list of champions have ults primarily meant to deal a bunch of damage to other champions, there are way fewer than you think because that kind of ability is actually really uninteresting.

K lets find out

Ult primary use is for cc, increase in damage, mobility, etc but still damages

That should include all champs except transformers. I admit some are questionable but most should be in the right category. Take out the transformers and there's a total of Approximately 57/127 champions that have ults purely for damaging. So 45% of the champion pool has purely damaging ults. I don't see that as few lol

These are all the ones you got wrong, many of them hilariously so.

Might wanna edit that because there are some obvious ones which are clearly for damage. Ziggs, Akali, and Ezreal are examples. But most of those ARE meant to damage. Granted, some are questionable but 80% or so are meant to damage.

Note that it doesn't matter what the damage is used for as long as its damage.

waveclear is very different from killing champions.

While that is true, if an ult can be used to kill champions and waveclear, it is still a damaging ult. The purpose of the damage doesn't matter. If the damage is there, its a damage ult.

Anivia's ult waveclear's very easily correct? That means that she must be doing some good dps. If she's doing good dps with her ult, it means her ult is a damage ult.

It doesn't matter what the damage in an ult is used for. If it does 500 damage to champions and 500 damage to minions, its still a damaging ult.

Wait, how is Illaoi's ult not used for damage?

therealdragon1 votes

Wait, how is Illaoi's ult not used for damage?

She was a questionable one lol. I classified her as not for damage because her ult is only meant to summon tentacles. Thats its primary use. Summoning tentacles doesn't do any damage. Only when the tentacles whack do they do damage.

Ralanr1 votes

I think they hit on the first summon and continue to hit when you use her W.

They don't hit on summon UNLESS there is currently a pulled spirit in the area (because all tentacles get one free swing on a pulled spirit)

The ult also reduces the base cooldown of her W which is what lets her get so many slams during the ulti (plus additional mobility and auto damage, especially now that W has %hp damage.)
