Why remove Atma's Impaler and add Titanic Hydra just a few months later?

Not trying to bash your balance or design choices or anything, I was just wondering why add an item that gives you more AD based off of your health, remove it, then add an item that gives you more AD based on your health just a little while later.

Atma's was a poorly designed item. It was a bruiser item that gave assassin stats (ad crit) with a "tank" passive (that similarly to last whisper's problem was almost as cost effective on squishies).

Titanic is a bruiser item with health and regen, so you can actually be a bruiser. That makes it 10 times better already, but it also has wave clear so low wave clear champions don't need to build the other hydra to keep up. It also has the benefit of having "visible" damage- you're not going to be surprised Warmog Renekton kind of hurts if you see he has the cone.

its not the same though.

titanic hydra gives on hit damage for building health. atmas gave ad. thats a large difference.

the stat combination of ad, armor and critical strike was great on garen for example, before they nerfed the passive too much. titanic hydra not so much, since youre not auto attacking much on the champ.

the reason why steraks, titanic hydra and dead mans were added was to give brusiers their own items instead of having them borrow from ad carries and tanks.

problem is in some cases bruiser items seem to work out better on melee adc, ranged adc and assassins than on the bruisers theyre made for. : /

But it doesn't. Atmas impaler was such a niche item, and was rarely purchased after recieving nerfs.

Well if Atma's gave AD based on health, then champions with AD scaling abilities would benefit more from it. Titanic hydra only increases auto attack power and wave clear. Atma's increases the overall damage of some champions.

Basically Atma's is more dangerous on Garen then Titanic is.

atmas would of been viable if crit was at least partially flattened: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/17b4jEja-players-betrayed-by-rng-rejoyce

since 15% crit would only give you like 143% bonus crit dmg. it would be more respectable.

I see it more as a bruiser item though. I would bring back atmas but remove the % hp scaling. Instead I would give it the old spirit of elder lizard passive:

UNIQUE - INCINERATE: Deals an additional 14 + (2 × level) bonus true damage over 3 seconds upon dealing physical damage.

maybe nerf the passive just a tad though.

and improve TBC as seen here. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/6jTzfWEE-the-reason-tanks-are-running-amock-early-game-is-because-black-cleaver-is-a-more-late-game-item

now Fiora would be back in business and be balanced.

Atma gave you pure AD for building health, making AD scaling bruisers very deadly (the best example is Jarvan).

In exchange, Titanic Hydra gives you an on-hit effect that increases the damage of your basic attacks and some casual on-hit effect abilities. It is also one of the reasons why actually carry champion with on-hit effects abused bruiser builds (Fiora and Master Yi are the biggest offenders).

While we could argue which enchanting effect is better, bonus AD enchants all your auto-attacks and all the abilities that scale with AD, while bonus on-hit effect damage will enchant auto-attacks and very few abilities (that most of the times already scaled with AD).

So I find Titanic Hydra easier to balance and I think Riot decided Atma's couldn't be balanced or thought that they will rework it into a totally different item.
