What if... Supports built Mejai?

They're cheaper than ruby sightstones, and definitely cheaper than rabadons, what if sustain based champs like Soraka or Nami built this to gain AP for better healing (both their ADC and themselves gain from this!), and just gained 15 assists? They give supports the scaling AP they need, and they shouldn't die if they're not irresponsible with their mana and health, especially if the support is specifically defense based (Braum, Janna, Soraka, Nami, etc) and not offense based (Karthus, Leona, Annie, etc)

On a competent support who's perfectly capable of keeping both him/herself and his ADC alive, why isn't Mejai viable?

Supports do this all the time. As others have mentions, Janna get it a lot. I build it on Soraka cause all she has to do is peel and ult for free assist. I played with a lux support who has able to get it maxed out and outdamage me (one of my first ranked games. Good times). Supports make better use of it than mid laners in my opinion because they are focused less and play safer (at least for mage supports). Not sure who told you it's not viable. It's actually recommended.

Nearly every Janna builds it.

Braum doesn't really benefit much from it because he doesn't have much AP scaling. Spending the price of Mejai's is a waste on him for the 0.60 on his ult alone.

... the others aren't actually played very much. They're also (somewhat) easier to kill than Janna, though a good Soraka/Nami should almost never die either.

A major problem with Mejai's on supports is that it costs 1400 gold, and you have to delay whatever else you wanted to build in order to get it on your low income.

I buy it on Janna Soraka Sona all the time.

I gues you could buy it on Nami but I find that her kit doesn't need damage or extra healing to be good (neither does Janna but the reason I go AP on her is because it's really hard to die on Janna even if she is squishy.)

The problem with building it on Soraka or Sona is that to make effective use of their kits you want to get closer to the front line. This makes you vulnerable. Janna has no reason to get to the front line except to ult (in which case she can jump in, ult, and run back safely). As such, on Soraka or Sona I think it's better to build more traditional AP items if you want AP, such as item 3285 on Sona or item 3174 on Soraka .

As a side note I think item 3025 is a really underrated buy on Soraka .

Janna doesn't need more healing or damage, but the AP on Mejai's gives her a higher percentage move speed, which in turn makes her even harder to kill, which makes her get more stacks for longer. Mejai's is a self-fulfilling buy on Janna, just like Leviathan used to be.

Same reason you rarely see the item in general. It puts a huge target over your head. Only support champ I would really consider getting it on is Janna because of her overwhelming safety.

I do it all the times. Mejai is gold-efficient after the buff that let it start with 5 stacks.

The only downside is that, you can't die, which is annoying sometimes.

I've bought item 3141 so many times on Janna or ranged supports like Soraka who don't have a whole lot of damage without a real AP build. It really helps in the laning phase and mid game.
