Let's talk about Influence Points.

Champions first, of course.

.# of Champions at that price x the price = total

13 x 450 = 5,850 21 x 1350 = 28,350 24 x 3150 = 75,600 41 x 4800 = 196,800 32 x 6300 = 201,600

131 champions for a grand total of 508,200 IP for all champions.

Let's add in runes.

I'll be doing the cost to fill the starting 2 rune pages, as most new players only have an AD and an AP page, only adding the costs of the most popular runes for that slot, found at http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/runes

.# of T3 runes, Rune Type x Cost = Total

Marks 9 T3, AD marks x 102 = 918 9 T3, MPen marks x 205 = 1,845

Seals 9 T3, Armor Seals x 102 = 918 9 T3, Health seals x 820 = 7,380

Glyphs 9 T3, MR Glyphs x 102 = 918 (These are the most popular glyphs by a LONG shot, so I'll assume for this scenario both pages use these)

Quintessences 3 T3, AD Glyphs x 512 = 1,536 3 T3, AP Glyphs x 512 = 1,536

For a GRAND Total of 15,051

Adding both of these together nets us 523,251 IP

Let's say the average player plays 6 games per day (which is stupidly high but it makes the math easier so whatever), half are wins, half are losses. We'll also assume that the average player wins and loses in the average amount of time, 37 minutes. This means 3 wins, 3 losses. At 37 minutes, the average win grants 100IP The average loss grants 68IP.

300 IP wins + 204 IP losses = 504 Daily IP + First win of the day = 654 Daily IP

Assuming the player does not ever stop playing his 6 games per day, and plays those 6 every day straight, it will take him (Rounded down) **800 DAYS ** to fill 2 rune pages and buy every champion.

Can we talk about how that is OVER TWO YEARS?

This is all forgetting about the fact that not everyone uses the most popular runes, some people buy more rune pages + Icons + Whatever else you can think of.

Hum, but why would you want to buy all champs? O_o

I mean, I have something like 30 or so champs, and 12 Rune Pages. Your basic assumptions are completely flawed. I agree that the grinding can be a bit tough in this game, but it's not THAT bad.

The more champions you get, the more flexible you are getting away from your "main " champion, the better chance you have at climbing

DeathBurst3 votes

Hummm, noooo? Not at all? Every single guide about climbing the ladder tells you to main a few champions on to focus on learning a small number of champs very well. Literally, search "LoL climbing" in youtube and have a look.

But even IF you were right, you don't need to BUY the champions for that. Free week is here for a reason.

Jetjoe1 votes

I believe free-week doesnt allow you to use the free champions in Ranked. They may have changed this but, it was definitely true back in Jan when I played my promos.

Most of the guides league provides will keep people in their current ranks because they arent efficient. The one that pisses me off the most is Phylol, most useless set of guides ever.

Playing your main champion isnt always going to get you where you want to be because so many champions just delete the other champions from the map.

I can think of two that I know are just hard core counters. Katarina and Malzahar

Pantheon and Fiora .

There are so many more these are just easy ones.

This game is alot about countering the opponent.

DeathBurst1 votes

There is a difference between knowing 4 or 5 champs in 2 roles to be able to counter-pick in most cases and knowing the full roster of 130+ champs.

Free-week still doesn't allow you to play free champs in Ranked, but if you just want to play a champ a little in order to get how they work, you shouldn't do that in Ranked anyway.

I will list out the champs I know well enough to defeat people in lane. I started league in December. Pantheon Blitzcrank Malzahar Jax MasterYi Volibear Nasus Graves MissFortune Heimerdinger Velkoz Quinn DrMundo DrMundo Nocturne Katarina Ekko Renekton Gangplank Jayce . These are the champs I feel confident playing in ranked.I have about 6-7 games of graves, but I know the entire 130+ champ rotations abilities passives well enough to know how to defeat them.

Having a larger player base than just 1 or 2 champs helps a lot.

DeathBurst1 votes

That's 19 champs (and you listed Mundo 2 times), for 4 lanes, approximately. That's pretty much what I said about 4 or 5 champs per lane.

And 19 champs is still only 15% of the player base. So I repeat, why would you want to buy all champs and then complain that it's worth 500K IP?

Jetjoe1 votes

I honestly didnt even finish the list. I havent played some for about 2 months but I knew them well too Nautilus Morgana Lulu Gnar Garen Darius Caitlyn Thresh Zilean Ziggs Yasuo Brand Evelynn Annie Azir Aatrox Chogath Kindred Rengar . I just cant list all of them out. you dont need every champ but I would recommend having atleast 70+ if you want to climb

DeathBurst2 votes

Well I didn't intend to climb much more this season, and quite ironically, I am mainly trying new champs in Normals at the moment.

That being said, I'm learning new champs because I want to widen my champ pool from ~5 to 15-20. I'm still convinced that too wide of a champ pool is more of a hurdle than an advantage. You obviously can't know as well 70+ champs as you would know only 20, and I believe this is more valuable than being able to counter-pick once in a while.

After a certain period of time you can do well on any champion you learn. I just learned graves and I dominated my lane at least in a bunch of games. Its really about the overall mechanics, knowing your enemies abilities and your own rather than how comfortable you are with a champion

Mundo forgot he was on the list, so he added himself again.

plus, some people want to be able to feel comfortable playing as/against any champion. And one of the best ways to learn how to play against a champion is learning how to play as that champion.

DeathBurst3 votes

Practice during free week. You can't honestly tell me you'll play 100+ champs competitively in Ranked. That's not possible. Even pros master only a few dozen champs, at most. And if it's only to get a basic understanding of the champ, free week is enough.

ThePartyLeader4 votes

Games like these aren't made so you can have all of the content. That's the whole point is you always have something to work towards.

Marshbouy3 votes

I think this is all correct, i dont want to test your math but the amount of IP needed for this game is just insane.

GaleWinUnleashed3 votes

What's wrong with this again? Unlocking things as you go gives you a sense of progress, which helps to keep players engaged. Aside from that, there's also no need to own every champion to be competitive; a few dozen would be sufficient.

That is a crazy amount of time. Especially since I only play 2-4 games day, and some times its at night and sometimes it's in the morning, some days I don't play, so I don't get the first win of the day every day.

underscores2222 votes

I don't really see how it's a problem that it takes a few years to own all the champions. Getting from level 1 to 20 should give enough IP to get a few interesting champs (especially if you grab some of the cheaper, easier ones). Once you hit 20, you can start getting runes. By the time you get to 30, you should have 4-8 champs and a full rune page. I know that's not enough to immediately jump into ranked games, but it is enough to play multiple roles and have some fun.

From there, with more knowledge about the game and champions, you can make decisions on who to save up for, who to get next. Some characters you may simply not like, and won't need to buy until you get everyone else.

It gives you something to strive for, something to achieve. It will feel really good when you get all the champions.

To me, in a lot of ways its similar to having a job. You get money, but only a limited amount. You get to choose how you spend it, but you can't buy all the things you want. Some things you have to wait for.

Takazaki2 votes

as multiple people have said, you do not need the full pool of champs to remain or be competitive. further more after the 4800 mark you can cheat the system by buying champ shard for 1.7kIP ( 1.7k*3= 5.1k) meaning you can spend less (38,400 less) . Riot has gone on the record to say that the rune system is flawed and they are working on a update for it. but the champion costs are completely fine.

Typical free2play model. They want you to either get impatient and buy champions with RP, or commit to the game and buy skins. There is always a grind if you want all the content in a free game.

I'm surprised you didn't consider hextech crafting, where you can get champions for free or reduced price (from random champion shard - only 1700 IP).

It's a piece of cake compared to the likes of MMO's.

And yet we also have no use at all for ip on long term players. I changed my name many times because i can and i still sit on 100.000 IP and can do nothing with it, not even gifting it to friends that still need it. And to in adition to that, i got 9champ shards out of my last 10 chests, and 1 skin shard for a skin i already have....

Riot manages to keep the game a huge grind for new players(especially runes as they are needed to be competetive) while still offereing no support for longterm players-,-
