Akali Still Needs Some Adjustments

So Akali's receiving some changes on the PBE, and the overall feedback has been fairly negative. I playtested her on the PBE, and she does deal a bit less damage, but that much can be fixed through number adjustments. I think the focus here should be on the gameplay adjustments she received, several of which didn't quite hit the mark:

#Issues:

  • Her W is still clunky because of its blink: I get that it might take some getting used to, and that it can allow for jukes, but the implementation does not feel good at all. Often, blinking towards the cast location makes Akali accidentally leave her Shroud immediately after, which feels anti-synergistic. While reducing the cast time back to the standard 0.25 seconds was an improvement, the presence of a cast time doesn't work well with what the ability is meant to achieve or her overall flow.
  • Crescent Slash's cooldown reduction on-kill isn't that great without an energy refund: One of the issues with Akali's previous one-second CD E is that Akali doesn't really work well with an "Energy dump" mechanic: she runs out of Energy pretty quickly and, unlike most other Energy champions, cannot recover much of it over combat, despite having a fairly prolonged fighting pattern, one that will be extended even more after this update. Making her spend 60 energy a pop even faster without addressing her Energy problems will leave her running out of steam in the middle of combat.

There are several more issues with the changes that I won't go into too much detail (Grievous Wounds isn't a great mechanic, her passive feels underwhelming, AD has almost no real purpose on her, her E still has no real gameplay, etc.), but those are the main two that I think need to be addressed, because they're gameplay changes that go in the wrong direction. Here are the adjustments I think need to be made to answer those problems:

#Solutions:

  • Remove Twilight Shroud's cast time and blink, and make it not interrupt movement or previous actions: The idea of Akali's W is that it's a smoke bomb you drop instantly to give yourself cover, allowing for protection in combat or jukes. Making it instant would allow Akali to evade attacks through its existing movement speed boost, rather than a janky blink, and would let her react faster.
  • Either make Crescent Slash refund Energy on kill, along with part of its cooldown, or move Akali's Energy restoration to her innate: Refunding some Energy with Crescent Slash would make its on-kill bonus accelerate Akali's waveclear and kill threat without simply burning through her resource. Alternatively, moving her Energy refund from her Q to her innate would largely preserve the same gameplay (she'd restore Energy with basic attacks from time to time), make her passive feel stronger, and allow her to recover Energy more consistently.

This is all coming from a non-Akali main, by the way, so input from more experienced players is welcome. I'm not as passionate about Akali's changes as many here, but I do feel she needs a bit more love.

Akali is SO HOT4 votes

The blink and other changes to her shroud should be removed completely. That mechanic has no place in her kit at all. I think moving her energy restoration to her passive is pretty interesting. It wouldn't really fit thematically because then she would have 3 parts of her passive instead of two but making energy restoration apply to everything would be interesting.

I don't like the changes to her shroud one bit and would be sad if it hit live like this.

I agree, just slapping on energy restoration as is would break the theme of her passive, and I think the solution would be to give bonus damage to both of her autoattacks, and have the second instead restore energy (so the focus would be on each autoattack restoring a resource, and the on-hit damage would be a given for both, which would help her last hit and trade better early, too).

Basically, something like this:

Innate - Twin Disciplines: Akali's next two basic attacks are periodically empowered, each dealing 14 - 70 (+ 50% AP) bonus magic damage. The first attack heals her for 10 - 130 (+ 70% bonus AD) health, and the second restores 40 - 80 energy.

You could always just Lee Sin it and make it restore 10 per hit with the current 2 parts.

Yep I really hope they revert the shroud changes (Please Riot Please!). It feels extremely clunky. Being able to jump over small walls with it does not feel worth the destruction of this skill. Also you can't use shroud anymore to grant vision (one of the main ways I use it) when you're when chasing into a bush, or on objectives over walls, or to zone/slow incoming enemies for allies. I do like the idea of removing shroud cast time. I feel it would allow better flow when fighting or juking.

Yes to having an energy restore when killing with Crescent Slash (E). Managing her energy for Q is fine but having a fight after wave clearing with E usually means I have below half energy. Which leads to only one Q and one W then you have to stall the fight until you have enough energy to actually trade instead of just taking free damage.

So Riot realized they gutted her too hard, and they're trying to remedy this in all the wrong ways, when the obvious solutions are staring them right in the face.

The changes to q applying mark of the assassin on targets below 40%. This can be cool. One of my suggestions was to add power to her q o compensate for the nerfs to R. I'm fine with this, could be interesting. Akali doesn't build morello's, and otherwise has a hard time with sustain heavy opponents like swain/vollibear.

Twilight shroud cast time returned to .25, well, I'll take it, but that change ultimately isn't the problem with shroud. The problem is no one asked for the blink, which is clunky, not very useful, and the changes to shroud are super restrictive. Shroud had so much utility before, it could be used to slow a chasing team and peel for an ally, or aggressively thrown out to slow a target, secure some farm, or grant vision of a brush. Now it can make you go over a wall. -_- Riot seems deadset on experimenting this new shroud, so dealing with the present situation im not going to complain that the original cast time was restored.

Cresent slash refunding cooldown if kills target w/ E. This is a dumb buff, that in no way effectively compensates for the nerfs. Just like the "buff" to shroud giving us that useless fucking blink, this "buff" is dumb and no one asked for this. Akali is already a pub stomper. Reset mechanics are effective only at low elo's, they fall off at higher elos. The goal should be reducing Akali's raw power and her tendency for feast "if I get a lead I kill you" or faminine. reduce her raw power and in return increase her ceiling. don't raise her floor, its already high enough, raise her ceiling so she can be playable at higher elos. Reset machanics are buffs at low elos, next to worthless at higher elos. This is the opposite of what should be done to Akali.

I appreciate Riot is recognizing they over did it with the nerfs, but these buffs illustrate to me they're utterly clueless as to what needs to happen to Akali to make her healthy for the game. These buffs (designed I presume to mitigate the nerfs) are aimed in all the wrong places.
