Why can Soraka still heal minions?

Teridax68··24 votes·7,014 views

As an avid support player, I've tried out Soraka a fair bit following her rework. She's amazing! She's a lot more interesting to play, and has a ton more power alongside more meaningful tradeoffs. The only thing I dislike, however, is that she's still able to heal minions: when playing Soraka, I tend to have Astral Infusion on quick cast, as it helps a lot when clutch-healing, but frequently I accidentally heal a minion instead of my ally. This is obviously bad on my side, as my ally doesn't get healed while I also lose health, but this also likely causes an unnecessary inconvenience to my opponents when last hitting. Was Soraka's ability to heal minions preserved intentionally? I personally don't think losing health in order to delay CS is a meaningful tradeoff, and limiting the heal to champions only would be a tremendous QoL buff to her (not that she needs buffs right now).

To all the Soraka players here: what do you think of her minion healing abilities? Have you had similar experiences when trying to heal allies? Would you like to have her keep her minion healing, or would you rather see it removed? To those playing against Soraka: how often have you seen Soraka use her heal on a minion you were trying to last hit? When something like that happened, how did it affect your gameplay?

The real question should be, "Why does Taric heal minions?

The way I scripted the spell it will actually always prioritize champions over minions if there is one in a small radius around your cursor. If you still feel like it's happening by accident too much I can try increasing that range to be more consistent.

But why can it heal them at all? Is this an interesting or satisfying mechanic, I wonder? It's frustrating for me in lane, honestly.

This. It'd be better just to remove Soraka's ability to heal minions if she has to pay health for it.

Never as beneficial as healing a teammate.

So you can heal siege minions and knock down that nexus turret once and for all.

FantasySniper3 votes

Yeah, you should probably increase that hitbox for the heal.

This is the first reply I've received from a Rioter! :D

Increasing the priority radius definitely sounds like a great idea. What this also means is that you want to keep minion healing: what are the plays you had in mind that would involve Soraka healing a minion? A large part of this thread talked about Soraka sustaining a siege minion to splitpush better: is that part of those intended plays? What about the situations in which Soraka uses her minion healing in lane against her opponent?

If she's taking the health cost to heal a minion, then she's putting herself at risk while increasing pushing power. That seems pretty okay to me. It's relevant for siege minions, yeah, and extra relevant for BoC'd siege minions or super minions.

Kynami5 votes

Minion healing is in there for things like Banner'd siege minions and super minions where a couple heals on the heavy minion lets you maintain a push long enough to take the tower.

Remove the minion healing.

I mean, what's the point? Shedding 10% of your life just to slightly annoy the enemy carry, or to buy you a few extra seconds while pushing a tower is so dumb.

Z Statistic2 votes

It's very easy to continuously heal cannon minions long enough until the second one comes and then you have 2 cannon minions attacking the tower. Healing minions is very important in pushing and gaining lane dominance. Preventing last hits is a very minor thing.

As for accidentally healing minions, there's a button that prevents you from targeting non-champions. I have it bound to space. Use it all the time.

I quite like it and feel that it's more powerful now that it has a shorter CD. I wouldn't be surprised if she came out as a niche pick for 2 man backdooring early since she can keep a minion alive for so long under turret.

duskdoll3 votes

Yeah it's frustrating sometimes especially when everyone is at the enemy team's base, you rush to heal your allies amongst the chaos only to find out that you healed a minion instead.

I'd say it should stay, but the health cost should be negated, but mana cost doubled or tripled. Meaning if she does heal a minion, she isn't wrecking her hp for mid-late game, but on the same front she does have to pay out a decent mana cost to try and mess up an enemy ADC's CSing in the early game, where she is still pretty mana restricted. Could also have a debuff preventing her from healing another minion for X seconds after healing the first one. This can also restrict her push from a banner of command minion.

Since nobody else is mentioning it, I believe there is a key-modifer (like Smartcast) to make your clicky spells only target Champions. Check the keybindings for your salvation.

Definitely keep the minion healing though. Options are good. Add depth.

Teridax681 votes

Thanks for the tip! However, I don't fully agree with options being good 100% of the time. A big issue when dealing with kits is the problem of false choices, where you're given several options but at least one of them is either never valid (or none are valid). If, for example, you had the option to heal enemies, that would offer an extra choice, but not one that you'd ever consider acting upon. Similarly, I think being able to heal minions is not a meaningful choice in itself: sure, you can go for a splitpusher build and sustain a super minion as they take down a tower, but is that extremely niche option really worth keeping when it's that obscure and inconvenient in more typical situations?

Gavran2 votes

Yes. :P But it's not particularly important that we agree on that; in this case I value the potential and you value convenience. I hope I was right about the keybinding and that it works out for you.

(I am definitely not too pro to sometimes target minions by accident myself, and it should probably prioritize champions regardless. Riot has the tech for Azir to E to a soldier he didn't click perfectly on, and for MF's Q bounce to do it. Definitely within their ability to make Soraka heal a champion instead if there was one with say 100 range of the minion you clicked.)

From when people asked about this during her rework announcement they stated its for stuff like Tibbers and other pets which use something similar to minions I guess so if you wanted you can keep Tibbers alive for longer

Relativistic Mot1 votes

There ARE reasons to heal minions though. The main reason is to heal siege / super minions / tibbers to increase you're siege time on a turret. This can actually be more important than healing your allies.

Mallic2 votes

Soo...what if they made only the weaker minions untargetable? Siege minions, super minions, Tibbers, voidlings and all of them are all perfectly viable targets for topping up. But those basic warrior and caster minions? Naaah.

FantasySniper2 votes

It should probably have some sort of bonus to healing them if not remove the possibility of it.

Like less health cost and less CD if you healed a minion.

Healing minions is good. Play more OSU and watch where your mouse is.

Fury and Emperor1 votes

Um, learn to play and don't click minions?

darkdill2 votes

It's called MISCLICKS.

Voidzilla1 votes

That is kind of weird. If this ability still gave temporary armor, I could see why they would still want it in, as it opens up things like turret sieging. But as it stands, it's just a clunky thing to have on a Champion like this.

Komachiman1 votes

On -occasion- that happens but more importantly clutch healing a cannon minion while pushing a wave is pretty neat (Dunno if her new heal still grants armor if it does that's added turret protection.)

Jamnon1 votes

So just heal the allistar under turret and be done with it. I feel like healing teammates is more rewarding than healing minions. If tibbers and annie both have health missing, it makes much more sense to heal annie as she will be in the fight longer.
