My biggest beef with Pyke
Isn't the gold generation on his ult, or his overall safety, although those things are annoying.
It's
.
You can't touch him because he's ultra slippery and only steps up when he's fishing for a hook, so you have to focus the ADC, same as you would for any other hook support. Buuuut he also gets to erase his ADC's positioning mistakes by procing Relic and he's got so much armor and his passive is so strong that you can't meaningfully punish him for doing so. Thresh? You can punish him. He trades HP for healing his ADC with relic. HP that reduces his kill pressure, since he can't reliably use his whole combo if his health gets low. Leona Presses W and doesn't take much damage. She trades a little HP, but gets it (and therefore her kill pressure) back faster than Thresh with her higher HP regen. Naut shields off the damage with his big ass shield, and the only cost he pays is mana, of which he has much more than Leona and faster regen to boot. Pyke? Blitzcrank? They pay even less of a toll. Pyke trades more HP than Leona, but regenerates it twice as fast. Blitzcrank trades HP, though not very much because of his high base armor. But even if you do punish him for proccing Relic and stop his healing, his kill pressure is still at 100% because he doesn't need HP to ensure your death. By the time you get to fire his combo is already spent and you're next to his ADC, silenced. And Alistar. Alistar is the worst. Not only does he bring so much kill pressure from his combo and get to proc relic somewhat safely, he also gets to hand out heals from his passive just for standing around.
##My problem isn't with Pyke supporting too hard with very little risk.## My problem is most hook supports supporting too hard with very little risk. My point is if you go full engage, you shouldn't also be able to safely provide heals. If your contribution to your lane is the threat of death if the enemy eats ones skillshot, then you shouldn't also be doing more on top of that unless you're taking a risk by doing so.
People complain about mage supports because they bring all this poke
or kill pressure
and incur little risk to use it.
People complain about enchanters because they bring both peel and other utility and they only have to incur risk if they want to also poke or try to engage.
And those are valid complaints.
But there's a double standard in saying that enchanters and mages should have to incur risk to provide value as a support, and yet not complain about hook supports providing huge kill pressure value at virtually no risk while also providing additional value in the form of heals with little risk (with the exception of Thresh, as previously noted).
Nah. Un-power creep the game. Make picking a catch and peel support mean all you can do is catch and peel, and anything beyond that incurs risk.
Absolutely reduce the amount of poke value mages can get safely. Absolutely reduce the amount of shielding/healing enchanters can do safely. But also reduce how safely hook supports can hand out heals in addition to their kill pressure value. Power creep is advanced, and buffing Blitzcrank's range to drop Pyke's ban rate is not addressing the problem. It's furthering it. Stop handing out buffs and start handing out nerfs.
: Just remove the AP. As a Spellthief's user, my biggest desire for the item is to allow me to quickly earn the warding ability by poking alot. You know what both powercreeps the game and gets in the way of me doing that? The increased damage I get from having it.
: Reduce the gold payouts. Also reduce the quest goal so that wards become available sooner, which will help with the jungle powercreep problem. Ideally wards should become available for a Coin user slightly later than they do for a Spellthief's user poking optimally.
: Make his passive not gain stacks from minions dying. Nobody should be getting heals for doing nothing.
Summon Aery: Does less, if any, damage. Again this helps de-powercreep the game while also helping Spellthief's users be able to finish their quest sooner.
