Thresh crowding out supports?

League of Legends Champions for Patch 7.10

I was just looking at support stats for plat + players and it is a little surprising that thresh is the highest winrate support, which is fine because he does take a good amount of skillz to fully utilize his kit. Then again he also is getting picked at twice the rate of even the second highest pick support (Lulu ), and he 'catches' a 30% pickrate. Is it right to have the most picked support(Thresh ) also doing better than every other support on average? It would seem that good Thresh players are outperforming other good support players more times than not and with a larger sample size. Actually, there are very few situations where picking thresh would be a bad choice since he can be played defensively and also cause picks for his team and the only limit would be the player behind the keys as to how effectively he can perform both. I personally would like to see more support diversity since one of either Thresh followed byLulu and Karma , seem to be almost in every game.

Mordekaiser has a 53% winrate as support too https://i.gyazo.com/2f72e251f08994ad48ac6ec069713663.png

######Just don't mind the pickrate :P

The problem though is how do you bring him back into line, simple number changes won't really help considering that it is his kit.

Thresh as always been a top tier pick. He can maintain that spot in the same sense that Lee remains top dog, he's ignored by Riot essentially. I mean if you look at everybodies kit who has been nerfed into the ground due to popularity, and then look at Thresh's kit- you'll wonder why he hasn't been hit with a hammer. He pretty much does everything but sustain and has things in his kit that other champions are suppose to identify as. Look:

Shield? Thresh Lacking mobility? Thresh Do you need a support that can assist you in escaping? Thresh Do you want the advantage of being able to build any support item? Thresh Would you like an engager? Thresh Want disengage? Thresh Do you like having strong CC on a low cooldown? Thresh Do you want to be tanky? Thresh Want to scale hard into the late game? Thresh Want soft cc with your hard cc? Thresh

List goes on. So, essentially other supports are forced to identify as like one or two things:

Janna Shield person Lulu Weaker shield but peel person Zilean Mario Braum Block projectiles or otherwise ults . . .

Not that surprising if you consider his past popularity

If there was a nerf I might suggest making his Q a little more punishing to miss but more rewarding if he lands it. Personally I think the CD should be increased by 2 at all ranks but have the Hitting an enemy reduces Death Sentence's cooldown by 3 seconds -> reduced by 5 seconds. Also the hitbox could get adjusted because it is very forgiving so reducing the hitbox may make it more challenging for him to get widehooks but at the same time giving him more finesse to catch out squishies hiding beside teammates. I like making him more skill dependent. Downside is he will get hit harder by this in low elo than high elo but I think since his kit is so loaded he needs to have a little more of a learning curve for landing good hooks.Blitzcrank

That keeps happening every now and then. Riot allows it because that means less enchanters on the game.

Thresh has always been a popular support and has always had an okay win rate. :/ The reason he's doing so well now is because of the type of popular supports that are with him. These immobile mage supports and squishy poke based enchanters are exceptionally weak to him as if he manages to grab them, there's a good chance he will kill them. However, the problem comes in when he also dumpsters other tank supports as well and heal supports. Thresh is a massive generalist and he's never not good to pick. So when he flairs up in popularity and win rate like this due to the meta, he completely takes over because he does well again all other types of supports.

He had 20% playrate with a 48% winrate before the last patch. Item and burst changes have really helped him survive longer in teamfights and have an easier time choosing to go in on a hook.

The only appropriate nerf (imo) would be his health. If you make his kit harder to use, you'll simply create an even larger divide between good Threshes and bad Threshes.

Coin really helps him out.

However, he doesn't crowd out any other supports. He has always been very popular because there is never a moment where Thresh isn't good, just maybe not the perfect pick.

Yeah, he is. I think he is probably too strong for plat level play.

Pros is a different matter entirely. It's not necessarily good to always balance around pro play.

Thresh's problem is he doesn't do something, he does a lot. Other supports are limited in what their specialty is, Thresh has several specialties. He isn't even really bad in the other areas to make up for being good at more than one. He's really only missing a couple things, such as Soraka level sustain or being able to buff the carry directly. Although what he offers can in most cases be better anyways.

The thresh nerfs are coming, eventually

I think its been a while since a "non- enchanter" has had the spotlight. Thresh isn't that big of a deal in my opinion, he has a relatively high skill requirement as far as supports go.

besides, he just went through about 8 patches where he was at a 47% winrate or something around there

Thresh is strong because of the current items. Gargoyle's, for example, has allowed him to dive in without dying as quickly as before.
