So what's the status on the Mandrake Ward?

First of all, I'll admit to being a Rengar main; I love his playstyle of hunting down squishy carries and killing them with little time for them to do anything at all.

However, I'm not stupid enough to know he has next to no counterplay aside from good ward coverage.

When I saw the idea of the Mandrake ward, I was excited to see that my favorite champion would actually get some frustration removed from him. The wards last for longer than regular wards, but don't actually provide vision. Instead, they hide in the brush and ping the map whenever a champion walks over them, with it not mattering if they are visible or not. This allows people to tell when a stealth champ, like Rengar or Evelynn, is approaching without actually revealing them; it adds counterplay to stealth ganks without making them useless.

But then the idea was just kind of abandoned...it's a shame because it was a really clever way to keep a unique feature from being so overpowered to the point of making those champions who utilize the unique stealth abilities purposefully weaker than others to compensate having such a great ability of ignoring vision.

So...what's the plan? Are you going to bring it back with some adjustments or are you just gonna abandon the idea completely? Personally I would love to have it in the game so you can properly balance stealth champs without having to compensate for their uniqueness.

EDIT: Wow, I didn't expect the thread to get this large :) thank you guys. Hopefully a red will see this and clarify what they plan on doing with this concept.

They only have 1,000 employees, come on guys, give them a break. They will never be able to be on Dota2's level since they got an amazing number of employees (28). kappa

League has a balance team. DotA has an IceFrog.

not an IceFrog, the almighty one and only Icefrog, the wizard of balance! (not including the god of wind)

I don't think it needs saving. Given everything that's been going on(Juggernauts and Worlds) it's probably been pushed to preseason. That's really where a change like this belongs anyway, especially since they're planning on looking at item 2049 and item 3361.

I like the thought of it as well, stealth is a interesting mechanic that Riot seems to not be implementing anymore (League of 3 hits %health damage). With mandrake ward this would allow for more counterplay to stealth rather than just pink wards, thus perhaps allowing stealth to be more present in the game.

Hopefully it comes back at the end of the season. Haven't seen it on the PBE for a while.

I kinda hope that this ward does not come into play. The concept is a great idea. But a ward that pings you? and detects stealth? kinda crazy. Have your team get a gosh darn pink. Gives stealth vision. No, you don't get a ping. But, I feel that you getting comfortable with having this ward warn you, will inhibit your awareness.

Pros: Will bring stealth champions some lines and weakness to that strength, which can be great for powerful ones like Rengar. Can increase your laning awareness (maybe). If you're not watching the map as much, since you can get a ping, you can focus on your lane, allowing to focus on CS and trades.

Cons: Will bring stealth champions some weakness to that strength, which can be harmful if you don't bring a lot save that stealth like pre-6 Eve. May Inhibit your awareness to the map, since you're accustomed to being pinged on dangers.

I suppose, but good players will still watch the map anyways, and it adds a little more depth into the game.

Remember that you can only have 1 pink out on the map at a time, can't cover your lane from stealth ganks. Sorry.

Pink wards aren't a realistic counterplay option to someone like Eve -- since they're visible, she'll just take them out when she finds them, unless you've put them close enough to your lane that you can defend... and if you did that, why bother having a pink anyway? She's basically got a permanent raptors' buff.

Green wards are great for visible champions because they reveal sections of the map, but the enemy doesn't necessarily know you can see them (unless they saw you ward, have raptors, or have a sweeper, and sweepers have a cooldown). I assume Mandrakes would be similar.

Just make it only detect stealth players and thats it. Best counter to stealth BS, but wont give vision or ping if someone is coming. Only pings when a STEALTH target is near it. Cost 60G each time, last as long as a ward. =Balanced.

If it's only useful against stealth players, it basically becomes a must-buy in Eve/Rengar games, but completely useless in all other situations.

It's pretty much in the same boat as the Abyssal Scepter rework that never happened.

PLEASE Riot, release this. That way champions like Evelynn can get viable without them getting nerfed every second patch.

I feel like it might be a tie-in to the Stealth/Assassin update (assuming we're going to have one of those, similar to the Juggernaut update and the upcoming Marksman update), to give Riot more leeway to give those champs a tad bit more stealth-related power while still having a counter.

Prob pre/season 6, same as the Abyssal Scepter rework that's been tested for ages.
