Rune Costs (Dear Riot Games)

Dear Riot Why do runes cost so much? a simple tier 3 rune page (I calculated using only flat AP runes cuz yolo) and found that would cost 12,606 IP. thats a lot of fucking IP. That is approximately the same price as 2 top cost champions (6300). which translates to approximately $15 worth of RP. The rune page i could make with all of this IP would yield 36.18 AP. This page would give me 786.915 Gold's worth of IP per game (using amp tome as the standard of gold:ap ratio). This is absurd! Runes are a Pay to Win like feature in a free to play game. Only you CANT ACTUALLY BUY THEM! You have to play the game to get them. Which sounds like its simply rewarding players for playing, but its not. By making it cost IP, you are taking away a players ability to unlock "free" content (champions). Now from a business standpoint, this must sound like a wonderful idea because altogether, this encourages people to pull out the credit card and pay for their champions with money. But, thats not how people work. The People who are likely to spend cash on champions are just about as likely to buy the champions with cash regardless of whether or not they are saving IP for runes. Yeah, that number is negligible and there are certainly people who buy some champions with rp and most with IP. but that isnt the point. The real point here is there are people who are dedicated to the idea that they will not pay for things they could get for free. These people are guaranteed to not buy champions with RP, but might buy skins with RP. These people will have to choose with low amount of content (saving for runes, not buying champions) or more content at a low quality (getting champions, but not having the runes to make them any good) And these people are not going to enjoy the game nearly as much as the people who have the runes and the champions. And do you know what people who don't enjoy a game do? They Stop Playing

And when people that stop playing, riot doesn't make any money from them. When runes cost 12,606 IP a page, riot loses new players. Buy getting rid of tier 1 & 2 runes, and just having Tier 3 runes, and also making those Runes extremely accessible, riot games could very well see new player growth once again. Sincerely,
A long term player who understands business is the only way to get your attention

I own over 260 Tier 3 runes. More than 40 of which are Quints.

I've probably spent over 130,000 IP collecting runes.

I could have purchased at least 20 champions for that much! (FYI, I own all but 25 champions now).

I DESPISED grinding for runes.

When you grind for runes, all your plans for anything else in league comes to a halt.

And then you have to grind for rune pages because you aren't allowed to edit them in champ select like you can with mastery pages.

I hate runes. I HATE RUNES!

I really love how not a single Riot employee commented

I believe runes should cost AT MOST 100 each.

i was more going for straight up free, but you are right, that would be SIGNIFICANTLY better

runes are supposed to be getting a rework within the next year i know its like wow 1 year i want it now but they have other more important things to worry about especially with worlds/assassins reworks and game changes for preseason/Season7

my suggestion would be that new level 30's and i guess current existing level 30's (to be fair to those who have been loyal to the game) get 1 FREE set of T3 runes so you get 9 free glpyhs/seals/marks and 3 free Quints of their choosing this means you get 1 free full page of runes so you shouldn't feel too far behind with your expected limited champion pool for new players

Tier 1 runes have been gone for a long while now. Tier 2 only cost 1 ip each now. Certain tier 3 runes, the ones frequently used are on permanent discount. On top of the fact you call it pay to win then instantly point out it can only played by ingame currency earned by playing the game.

Your argument folds like a house of cards...

pay to win LIKE set up with other consequences that i mention further down the line

It's still a flimsy argument. Any new player can run tier 2 runes for barely anything. With the two basic pages given, they can buy the discounted tier 3 runes quite easily.

People just don't like making an effort and earning anything. They like everything handed to them.

and yet, by not paying to for the full tier 3 runes, they are at a disadvantage against people who did pay to win. And i dont care about discounted runes when most runes that are useful are still expensive

His argument is fine and sound, it's about game advantage.

They're gonna rehaul the entire rune system soon (TM). They have considered making all runes free and available to everyone to pick from in Champ select, as well as potentially refunding all rune costs.

its soon TM though, idk if they're actively working on it.

Well when they finally get around to decreasing the price of runes and or redesigning them they could partially compensate those who already dumped a ton of IP on them with hextech crafting goodies. That'd be nice for everyone.
