There is no risk in picking Gangplank

There's never a reason not to pick him. He fits into every team comp, can survive any match-up, has the safest lane in the whole game, gets free bonus gold using a ranged and targeted ability to last hit, has global pressure, has unbelievably strong wave-clear, has the best version of Cleanse in the game, and scales into a late-game hypercarry while providing incredible utility.

Yes, he has weaknesses, but exploiting them is nearly impossible with all of the tools he can use to play safe. Unless you really get ahead (I'm talking 2-3 kills ahead) before he gets level 6, you're going to lose lane to him because he can get fed across the map while safely farming from a distance. If you try be aggressive, he can just press W and run away. If you let him push, he harasses you under tower while also ruining your own map pressure because if you teleport, he'll just take the turret.

He honestly shouldn't be allowed to be so safe when he scales so hard into the late game. He outdamages most mid laners while being far more reliable and untouchable. He destroys melee champions because they can't close the gap without getting kited, bursted, and ignored due to his W.

He's a cancerous champion and needs to be looked into. Increase the cooldown on his W or R, or lower the amount of gold he gets from his Q. That's my suggestion to nerfing him.

just take away his bonus gold, there's no reason for it.

His laning is godawful; he can farm under tower pretty well, but his range is fairly low, he's squishy, and he doesn't have good mobility, so he's susceptible to ganks/dives. He can't duel people for shit in the early-mid game and is super reliant on getting his items. If you aren't pressuring him early, either as a stronger champ like Renekton (in top lane), or by out-ranging and poking him down (pretty much any mage in mid), you're doing it wrong.

Not saying GP isn't super strong right now. He is, but that's not because his laning is good, but because of his late game scaling and global presence.

In lane, it's fairly easy to predict the barrels and avoid them, then punish him for using them to clear waves, since he needs them to stand a chance in a fight.

diving gangplank . . .is the last thing ANYONE should do ever

you need to have at least 2 different CC or play around that W cooldown

even if. all gp has to do is ult right ontop of himeself pop a barrel and start sprinting around his tower like a maniac. healing when he gets hard cced. i have gotten so many double kills because people underestimate the power of his ult slow and passive speed up. andhis oranges heal

Even if he does ult on top of himself, if you've been pressuring him enough and have good burst + support from your jungler, its not a particularly difficult dive. If he's close to half HP, you can dive him pretty easily with a bit of jungle help, and a jungler like Lee sin can kick+flash him away from his ult and the tower.

You can also start the dive, then back out once he drops the ult. It's not like you're forced to commit, and forcing him to burn his ult CD removes his global threat and lets you dive him within the next ~ 2 minutes while it's on CD.

I was diving GP through his ult as Renekton in a recent game. He wasn't particularly good (he didn't try to poke me down at level 1 to get an early edge, so I was able to kill him at level 3 with ignite), but his build was standard and he was keeping up reasonably well in farm. Because my burst did 70% of his HP in the mid-game, I could poke him once and take a tower hit or 2, then all in him in ~8 seconds when my ability CDs came back up. Even if he ulted, it didn't matter, because he was dead, and/or I was out, before it could do significant damage. As long as I wasn't getting poked down by barrels, which he needed to clear waves under tower and get that Q bonus gold, there was nothing he could do to survive in the lane, so he was taking jungle camps to supplement farm and backing if he took significant damage.

if he ults and he doesnt die. that means that he came out okay. as gangplank i am MORE then happy to use my ult to keep my alive. if i dont get a kill? eh. ill get big regardless. and being able to back and come back is perfectly fine with me.

also people that play gp top have no idea how to play gp

he works as a FAR better mid laner because he fill the roll of burst AND sustained damage. and while in mid he can still put global pressure. why go top and take up a lane where a tank can be you know?

His laning is bad in the sense that he isn't going to win from kills. It is extremely safe, however. He doesn't have to poke. He doesn't have to trade. He doesn't have to be aggressive. He just has to farm with Q, which is way too easy to do with no risk. The mana cost isn't high enough to be punishing.

even at 45% cdr, level 18 when you finish E, his QSS heal is an 8 second CD.

Early game, it's almost 20 seconds and heals for hardly anything unless he's super low. % health missing and all that.

Baiting that out once while you have a jungle with CC, will let you at least have a chance on taking him early on.

Also, item 3143 is good if you can go it.

the main problems with gp are

  • the ult is just broken, with the instant thunderlords proc it´s really noticable burst early on and still an effective tool to create picks later in the game....many gps win the game just by ulting alone currently

  • despite all his play-patterns clearly being ranged he´s treated as a melee champ and thus way too hard to kill for the kit he has...so they should either lower his base stats and get rid of the speedbuff or make him more of a true melee and get rid of the barrels all together.

Teemo I think the GP i faced a few games ago would disagree with ya lol...........whooped him so bad. He didnt even get to do any damage with his kegs...i kiled them before he could use them.

you will never kill a good gp's barrels

He can either place them behind him or he can time it so perfect his Q will always lasthit them

so you pretty much won vs a bad gp

If LCS Gangplanks are bad, then where are these good ones?

If the GP can time it so perfect why can't any other player? Sorry, but I have and have seen so many GP's get cockblocked because the enemy ranged is better at last hitting the barrels than they are.

Because he can just auto them then Q, or Q the ones in safety range and THEN place another barrel. You can explode newly placed barrels after one has already exploded for some dumb reason. He also gets a free hit on you because you're attacking the barrel and not him.

MohawkBird3 votes

More often then not when playing against a ranged champion the barrel that you placed after won't even be in range of the champions you want to hit. It'll really only ever hit melee unless he has had prior time to setup.

Against ranged champions GPs barrels are short of useless without proper bush play because even keeping one safe behind you then placing one down to hit them after you've proc'd it won't reach them.

VvVVvV1 votes

Your statmenet is not true.....Ive laned against a few very good GPs and have killed many barrels.

Elikain1 votes

So, this turned into "you've played against a garbage GP and good GPs ruin your day"? This is true for any champion.

Zed is notorious for his SQ performance and frustration and yet in LCS, no one picks him or bans him. Tho completely different environments and two separate opinions on who's strong and who's not.

No, you can kill the barrels. You can zone him out with Certain champs, but a lot of characters can take out barrels with an AA reset.

I would ruin your teemo with GP tbh

Actually there is a Diamond GP main I met recently that picked teemo into GP and won everytime. He said he just rushes bork and forces gp to keep his ult or else he dives him. I've never actually watched how he does it but he hasn't lost lane against GP as Teemo as far as I've seen. His ign is Tiraamiisuu.

VvVVvV2 votes

Lol you people are so troll. I dont care about the down votes but its just funny to me to see down votes on a statement that was true and in no way toxic. Im pretty sure all 4 of them came from GP players who didnt like the fact that a Teemo whooped one of their own..but hey.....if your boy got whooped by a Teemo then he just got whooped....down votes wont change that.

hasnt gp been nerfed enough? now tri force got changed, y u still whine?

Azir hard counters Gangplank like this is how you piss off a gp main. azir can disarm barrels from a VERY VERY safe distance with his soldiers. he dishes out just as much damage as gp if not more late game. can deal that damage more reliably. and can utterly prevent gp from doing damage. you have to get REALLY clever to land barrels against even a semi smart azir.

Incognonymous1 votes

I hate rework GP's early game, which is weird because old GP had one of the strongest level 1's in the game with his base stats and grog soaked blade.
