Can we please give Mordekaiser his health regen back?

Matezoide··93 votes·4,319 views

This is a champion that uses health as a resource and has no forms of natural sustain, while being weak as shit early.

His regen is literally just 0.1 higher than Riven's....why? Why is he literally forced to waste 1200 gold so he doesnt kill himself in lane?

Sure, he has a shield, but the only way to keep that shit up is by striking at least 3 minions on a single spell whenever it is off-CD....which pushes the fuck out of the lane. If you back off (Like you should, because Mordekaiser is literal gank bait), the shield will be down and you will have even less HP than the other guy anyway.

Meanwhile the likes of Riven just needs to use 800 gold to sit in lane forever and has a free shield every few seconds. Meanwhile Rumble's shield has a 5 seconds CD and no resources (And still has better regen than Mord).

Meanwhile Aatrox, Vlad, Rengar, Tryndamere, Nidalee all have healing spells (With only Nid's costing mana, but thats offset by her having three free skills, including a 5 seconds CD dash). Even the ones that need to hit minions to sustain (Such as Aatrox and Vlad) only need to hit one minion at a time, so they dont push the lane anywhere near as hard.

Agreed. He has a lower health regen then almost anyone in the game, for no real reason. The other day my lane opponent was afk and I still managed to lose a fourth of my health just by csing. It's really frustrating when the squishy mage I'm up against is healing up faster then I can. He used to have regen of 8. But when he got his "compensation" it got lowered to 3.

WorldEnding9 votes

That reason being so he can't be such a bully in lane anymore. If you were any good at him before the update, you'd know what im talking about.

junglerboy166 votes

yeah, he was a bully before, but taking away 63% of his base health regen for minuscule health cost buffs is terrible design. If you want to nerf his early game pressure, nerf the strength of his early game shield (which is what made him a lane bully), not his resource and only sustain.

Thunder Dreamss2 votes

The thing is the change wasn't to prevent him from being a lane bully per-se. It was to make his bullying lane risky, the same reason they gave Riven a low health regen. He has the tools to trade hard and force allot of opponents out of lane but he pays for it in the fact that he can't really recover if he screws up.

But both Riven and Mordekaiser are different champs, and can't really be compared. Mordekaiser has no mobility, it is much easier for him to screw up because he doesn't have the mobility to force disengages or dodge pokes or escape from ganks.

Also, if the reason is that he is such a huge lane bully, why then Darius is allowed to have super high health regeneration? He is too a lane bully, and is arguably much more of a lane bully when compared to Mordekaiser, especially against melee champions not named Yorick.

Thunder Dreamss1 votes

Riven deals high damage and has mobility, hard cc, and a pretty crap shield to avoid damage with. Mord has higher damage and a much stronger shield to avoid damage with. Their goals and play pattern IN LANE are similar even if their tools are different.

They both want to force allot of trades. Riven dashes in, knocks you up, hits you, and dashes back out to deal damage to you and get away with little retaliation. Mord e's you, q's you, and has so much shield he can walk away and you can't stick any damage to him.

Mind you, I could be wrong in my understanding of Riven. I don't actually play her, I'm just going off of what I know about her.

I wonder when Riot will wake up to the notion that Rumble is easily one of the most frustrating characters to deal with top lane. Tough to take down, one of the best ultimates in the game, consistent top competitive picks, and enough CC to make a lot of other top-laners blush. His resource management (and passive) is a total joke, which makes his powerspike insane as soon as he builds Haunting Guise.

WHERE THE FUCK IS HIS "CC" YOU MEAN HIS SLOW?

Enough CC to make a lot of other top laners blush? He... he only has slows. Several top laners pack actual hard CC...

That still ain't making top laners blush in the CC department.

Is his ultimate not considered incredibly powerful CC, zone-denial, and damage? Or are slows no longer considered CC anymore?

I'm gonna repeat: a SLOW does not make top laners blush in the CC department. You said Rumble had enough CC to make top laners blush - a SLOW is not going to make top laners blush when there are top laners like Nautilus running around. Then you have people like Wukong when he's good, Lissandra when she's up there, the occasional Aatrox, Shen, Mantheon, Malphite, Maokai, and so on. He ain't making any top laner blush with his CC unless they are packing literally none, like Fiora or the occasional Yi top.

His damage and zone-denial are completely irrelevant when talking solely about his CC, which is the only thing I brought up.

i assume the same reason as draven, his skill cap is high and his resource management isn't a total joke, you have to make sure when you should or shouldn't overheat, having to aim your ult with a very small time (and its very sensitive) frame if you want to effetively overheat. hes very mechanically challenging.

Morde is a mess right now. Riot wants him to build tanky, but he has no CC and low base damage. He can't really be a mage anymore either because they crushed his AP ratios across the board, and they weren't great to begin with (hence his utter reliance on DFG). They obviously shouldn't give him CC, and in my opinion, his role should be the mage you just can't kill. His kit should be oriented heavily towards DPS (lower cooldowns across the board) to keep his shield up consistently, but his burst should be minimized and his kit left clearly as a persistent damage source. Tanks who's sole job is to attack the enemy team with all they've got (like Mundo and Shyvana) have worked before and still do, and making Morde a DPS sustain tank would be perfect.

Morde should be the champ who you really can't fight in the open, but who also has the clear weakness of not being hard to run away from. His presence should be a deterrent in and of itself, but if you play it right, the counter effect is simply to bypass his immobility and lack of CC to kill his allies. Treating Morde this way is a tricky thing, since if he is too strong he becomes a low counterplay champion murdering machine, but if he is too undertuned, he becomes an ignorable pest at worst, but it is really his core identity. He is the paladin of pain, a durable, persistent threat who will kill you slowly if you fight him and who's greatest counter is simply fleeing in terror (or in the case of League, out rotating and catching out his allies).

My ideas for how to change him are pretty simple:

Passive: Max shield values adjusted to 50 (+25 per level) (+8% HP) from 90 (+30 per level). This reduces the base shield at level 1 by 1 health without runes, masteries, or items. At level 18 it reduces the base by 130, but the health scaling increases the total by 153 (net increase of 23) with only base health. This allows a tankier Morde a little more room to breathe late game if he opts into a little health in his items, without drastically changing the scaling of a non tanky Morde.

Q: Base damage and scalings increased to 70/110/150/190/230 (+50% AP) (+100% Bonus AD) (up from 80/110/140/170/200 (+40% AP) (+100% Bonus AD)) and the bonus for hitting only one target adjusted to deal 50% more damage, or 105/165/225/285/345 (+75% AP) (+150% Bonus AD) (up from 132/181.5/231/280.5/330 (+66% AP) (+165% Bonus AD)) These changes shift his power slightly away from his early game damage in favor of better AoE and slightly improved single target damage late game, while also reducing the amount of his power budget sen on an absurdly high bonus AD ratio.

W: Bonus armor and MR changed to 9 (+2 per level) (11-45) from 10/15/20/25/30. Damage changed to also deal 10% combined armor+mr damage per second, for a total of up to 60% armor+MR damage (damage calculated before cast, the stat bonuses it gives are not factored in). AP ratio unchanged. Base damage changed to 14/26/38/50/62 (total 84/156/228/300/372) from 20/32/44/56/68 (total 120/192/264/336/408) (at level 1 he deals slightly less, and at 18 he deals 7.78 more damage per second, or 46.68 more damage total with no items)

E: Cooldown changed to 6/5.5/5/4.5/4 seconds from 6. Base damage lowered to 75/115/155/195/235 from 70/115/160/205/250. AP ratio reduced to 55% from 60%, Health cost adjusted to 24/35/46/57/68 from 24/36/48/60/72.

R: unchanged.

these changes generally are nerfs to his early game damage and buffs to his alts game, while also encouraging a build centered around a mix of sustain, HP, resists, and AP. With these changes, it would be safe to bump Morde's base HP5 back up to around 6 without making him an oppressive lane bully again.

I agree with everything that you said, except the part that you said that Mordekaiser has low base damage. His base damage is really high to be honest. I play him as an AP bruiser with magic penetration, and it works wonders.

Here is my build for Mordekaiser on most games:

item 3152 item 3158 item 3001 item 3151, item 3065 or item 3116, and then either item 3157 or item 3075. If the enemy team is full AD, I use Zhonya instead of Abyssal Scepter. I can swap item 3158 for item 3020 if I am using CDR glyphs, this allows me to deal more damage and still maximize CDR. item 3111 is also an option if the enemy team has too much CC.

The idea is that Mordekaiser's bases are very high, so I use a build with a lot of flat magic penetration and cooldown reduction. Liandry is also used not only because of the flat magic penetration, but also because of the passive, allowing Mordekaiser do deal with champions late game that tend to have high health pools.

I also use AP items that give resistances or health, allowing Mordekaiser to be tanky while still doing a lot of damage.

Spirit Visage is used for the extra sustain with WotA and his ult, and to patch up his low natural health regeneration. Thornmail is used if the enemy team has a lot of dangerous auto-attacks, and works wonders with his shield. But Zhonya is also an option. It allows Mordekaiser to deal more damage and is recommended if the enemy team has dangerous spells such as Zed's and Karthus' ults. Rylai is a viable option over Spirit Visage to solve Mordekaiser's problem of lacking CC, it also allow him to stick to his targets, while also doubling Liandry's passive damage, allowing Mordekaiser to slowy murder enemies that dare getting close to him.

BastionKross2 votes

I use a bruiser/DPS Morde build myself. His base damages are really quite high, and with Mpen can be effective even late game with little AP in the overall build. His ratios suck for a burst mage and DFG is gone, so there's no reason to throw tons of AP on him anymore.

Unfortunately, there's little reason to build HP on him either. While more HP is good on every champion (except Soraka) Morde has less reason to build it than other champions. His shield is supposed to be the main thing keeping him alive, and it scales with resistances. His shields will stay up a lot longer when you have 150/150 AR/MR as opposed to 70/70 and 1000 extra HP. This means that while items like item 3151 item 3116 do give Morde some additional tankiness, %HP damage, and a slow, it's not helping his shield much and probably shouldn't be rushed. Part of the reason I like the rework above is that it gives his shield some HP scaling so you can build those items guilt-free.

However, having extra HP or AP isn't a bad thing. My core items are item 3020 item 3001 item 3068. Runes and masteries give me 20% CDR. The MR shred from Abyssal increases the burn of the Sunfire, adding another layer of DPS on top of Morde's W. These also give him a great amount of Mpen and resistances, both of which are very important. After those, it's pretty much whatever you need: Need to kill tanks or just deal more damage in general? item 3135 item 3151 Need some form of cc to help peel? item 3116 Need to stay alive vs heavy AD? item 3075 (Abyssal also increases the damage here too) Vs heavy AP? item 3065 Want to split push? item 3512 item 3060 Want to be a pain? item 3026

item 3152 is still an item I'm on the fence about. Since this build revolves around shredding MR anyway, it's not going to be healing as much as before the recent change. Also, given that most of Morde's abilities are AoE, that's a huge reduction in healing on top. item 3146 would probably be better for healing in the long run, but that's assuming that you build a item 3145 in the first place. I find that a good supply of item 2003 will be more cost/space effective to get you to the point where Morde is a high enough level that the health costs on his abilities cease to be a thing.

junglerboy162 votes

I'm actually more a fan of Gunblade over WotA on Morde ever since they buffed it to have 80 AP.

The AD and lifesteal it gives isn't bad either since Morde actually has one of the highest base attack speeds in the game at level 18, and 40 bonus AD gives his Q an extra 66 damage, which is nothing to scoff at if you are getting the sustain anyway.

BastionKross1 votes

I will agree. I believe that, especially after the WotA changes, if you want Morde to sustain himself it's most likely better to grab a gunblade. The ranged slow may not be much, but on a champion that has no cc and very little mobility it's nothing to sneeze at.

junglerboy161 votes

to be fair, for a tank/caster based fighter, his abilities are low damage. The nearest comparison in the game right now is Rumble.

He has no health costs and similar CDs, but:

Q deals 115 more base damage un-enhanced, 142 more while enhanced, not to mention having more than 2 times the AP ratio.

W's shield is weaker than a max strength Morde shield unless Rumble has 937 AP, but Rumble's shield also offers MS and is on a short cooldown where Morde relies on actually dealing damage to generate his shield, so it isn't strictly better than Rumble's.

Rumble's E can deal almost twice the damage of Morde's E if in the danger zone, not even considering having up to twice the AP ratio and a hefty slow to boot.

For Rs, both are DoT effects, but rumble's has a massive AoE and a slow, while Morde's takes longer to deal its damage, is single target, and requires the target to have something between about 3800 and 3400 HP for it to even deal the same damage as Rumble's ult based on how much AP he has.

The only things Morde has over Rumble are his ghost, and he doesn't even deal enough damage to get a ghost reliably anymore. He needs buffs badly.

Mordekaiser usually has to start with item 1054 and then build item 3152 or item 3146 before he can start healing himself.

I'm in the midst of becoming a Mordekaiser main, so I have a couple of things to point out here.

  1. You're completely right, his regen is shit, and needs to be at around a 4.5 in order to be a valid pick for people who aren't proficient with him.

  2. Like I said - proficient. Honestly, I stomp my lanes with him consistently, because of his shield and healing from ult at the last second. He really doesn't NEED this buff, I'd much rather give him a slow on his E, or consistent MS on his W than have health regen, but I can completely see him using this type of a buff to become a valid pick at higher elo's.

  3. Play him for a while, get good at farming via auto's and you'll be able to manage him well. Just practice last hitting with auto's, and only push lane when you're playing against a laner who likes to roam (Leblanc, Katarina, Twisted fate, etc...), that way they can't leave lane without losing mid/top early.

  4. Finally, after 98% of my games with him, I get the same thing: "Wow, that shield is BS... Morde is so OP." This right here is EXACTLY why he isn't OP. Really, he isn't as safe of a pick as Riven (with two dashing abilities, and two abilities with hard CC), but if you can manage your pushing power+shield, you can win lane easily, even without the health regen buff.

Just remember one tiny, simple tip: after getting spellvamp, when pushing wave or taking raptors: E, THEN Q. I see so many people getting this wrong. If you want to heal more health than you lose, DO NOT USE Q FIRST. E the wave, Q the wave, that's 5 farm and you lost no health.

EDIT: I forgot, if we keep making "Buff morde" threads, RIot might, then he won't be my secret weapon anymore, and people might actually know what his abilities do. Just pointing that outMordekaiser

Is Mordekaiser really that hard to manage for people?

Even if I spam the abilities in lane I never really had problems, and on his first back he is able to get a item 3145 and completely remove his resources entirely.

If you want to buff Mordekaiser he needs to actually be reworked from the ground up, he isn't exactly a complex champion, and his passive makes balancing him difficult to do.

The idea is that you convert your Health into shield. You're not losing Health, you're gaining it. But, you have to actually use it by putting yourself at risk, instead of sitting back farming like every other manaless ranged champ does. I don't think Morde is compensated enough for having to make that sacrifice though, but similarly to how mana champions can buy a Mana item, you can buy Spellvamp to mitigate your weakness. Morde could definitely use some changes, but that's why his Regen is low.

taking spell vamp quints help negate most of the early game side effects. you'll still lose hp but not as much as you would without them.

I just noticed but most champs that use HP as a resource have at least one way of gaining back hp through their skills. Vlad has his Q, Aatrox has his Q, Mundo has his ult, Mordekaiser has his ult and Zac has his passive.

8rRa2h05051 votes

Mord does get his health back: it's just in a different form (that shield; it multiplies his effective health, and benefits from resistances too).

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

But its no way of sustain. What if you're low after a fight, and need to go heal up? Every other champ can do this easily (Vlad Q and E, Aatrox W passive, Mundo.... passive, any AD champ with lifesteal). Morde won't heal much even if he as spellvamp after fights, because his health costs are already so high, and theyre all AoE.

If morde is ever viable it'd be a really scary thing because his ult is so game breaking... literally swings any teamfight in your favor and you can 100-0 a carry and then turn a teamfight 6v4

The regen thing keeps his early game in balance... trust me you don't want morde mid to be a thing

There are plenty of ways and plenty of time to deal with Morde's ult; unless it gets changed to an instant (which would be tricky: reducing the damage to a low-medium, flat amount might work), or near-instant (e.g. 1-2 seconds), it's not anything to really worry about, unless you haven't heard of item 3140 , summoner 1 , or the like.

Didn't we have this discussion when we saw the gutting of Morde's health regen on PBE a few months ago?

I still have no idea why did Riot kill his health regen and he should really have it back.

He didn't even get a lane buff with his health cost changes because Siphon is still at a grossly high cost.

I mean Ahri for spammable 200 ms buff. Gotta give Morde something too.

I'd be fine with the bad health regen if he didn't instantly lose his shield ...

ROFL, 1 second after your skills/basic attack, you already lose it ...

But those are all different champions with different abilities. You can't compare them.

Yeah, Morde's a mess now. Just with the way his kit works he's either the gank bait who is useless as heck because of his 0 escapes or CC, or he's the unkillable juggernaut of tons of damage

If you're going to buff his health regen, nerf his shield.

Not only that, but they also nerfed his healing abilities vs minion waves when they put through this last change to AP items. So rushing Wota isn't even good anymore, because it heals about the same as revolver vs minions and doesn't have an effect until people get MR, by which time you have VS.

Because he shits on any lane lost level 1
